A few reviewers complained about this episode, but you have to admit its original. The big problem is Joe's client, but if you're an old fan, it's no surprise. There will be WORSE clients to come. I give it 9 Stars for the actors.
Series regular Chester Krumholz wrote the story, making Joe's client, Joyce (played by Marlyn Mason) rather careless in her choice for a companion. She hires Joe's company to find her new boyfriend, who is quite elusive. There's good reason because the guy is a hired assassin. This puts Joe in a real tight spot. Joyce is not listening to his warnings -- and that gets both of them in deep trouble.
Action to follow, make no mistake. Joe gets slugged -- even though he's experienced in karate. Yes, this will happen in future episodes too. Be prepared.
The cast is effective, lead by Marlyn Mason, always making the most of her role. She sure does here. Marlyn would later co-star in another cop show called LONGSTREET, all about a blind private eye. Canadian actor Donnelly Rhodes plays Ramon, best remembered by us big kids as kooky Dutch on SOAP. He also was a regular on the YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.
Veteran Dick Miller, popular in many 50s cult films (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) has a bit as a fashion photographer. Miller always seemed to get smaller roles on tv, and that's a shame because he was a master at playing a broad range of roles. Henry Calvin has a slick role as Lazaro, best known for co-starring on ZORRO.
Give it a watch, and catch some snappy dialogue, thanks to Chester Krumholz. Chester also wrote for KOJAK and POLICE SURGEON. SEASON 1 EPISODE 6 CBS/Paramount remastered dvd box set. Collectors edition. 6 dvd. Released 2006.
