Frank Hildebrand, a producer and production manager who most recently worked on Fear the Walking Dead, has died. He was 73.
Hildebrand’s family confirmed to Deadline through a statement from his rep that he died following a brief illness on November 21, a little more than a week before his 74th birthday.
Born and educated in Zurich, Switzerland, Hildebrand began his filmmaking career in the UK before moving to Hollywood in the 1980s, working on such indie films as Vice Squad (1982) and Once Bitten (1985).
He then went on to line produce and supervise on such films as Triumph of the Spirit (1989), Freeway (1996), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Into the Wild (2007), The Runaways (2010), Fair Game (2010) and The Tree of Life (2011). In recent years, Hildebrand served as a producer on the last seven seasons of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Evil Dead Trap
Mix up your January Giallo viewing with Evil Dead Trap. Although its title invokes Evil Dead – and there’s a bit of Sam Raimi-esque kineticism in the camerawork – the 1988 Japanese film shares more in common with the lurid Italian thrillers: a mysterious killer, elaborate murder set pieces, gruesome violence, stylish cinematography, a dreamlike atmosphere, and an infectious synth score.
Upon receiving a graphic snuff film, a late-night TV host (Miyuki Ono) rallies a small production crew to investigate its origins at an abandoned military base. The story plays out in a manner that could be considered a slasher, but...

Refresh for more…Mufasa continued to get from the count on Thursday, beating Sonic The Hedgehog 3, $12M to $11.55M. The 3-day and 5-days on these two family movies are expected to be close. Mufasa is currently looking to be the stronger at $58M. Running total through yesterday on Mufasa is $76.4M while Sonic 3 stands at $99.55M.
But enough about those filthy animals, the real story over the holiday are the classic labels, Focus Features and Searchlight which are both seeing record openings. Post Covid, Focus Features rose from the ashes this weekend to remind the town how hip they can make movies, the win here being Robert Eggers’ gothic vampire movie Nosferatu which is eyeing a $21.4M 3-day and $40.6M 5-day after $7.6M yesterday, the pic’s second day of release. At five days, that’s the biggest Focus Features opening ever, besting the Friday-Tuesday take of 2019’s Downton Abbey which did $38.4M.

Kurt Russell refuses to accept that Bone Tomahawk is a typical "Horror Western," and, yet, he has compared it with his own classic 85% Rt horror flick. Bone Tomahawk holds a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 91%, suggesting that critics have almost unanimously praised the film for the chills and thrills it instills in viewers. The film's audience score of 74% highlights that even though most viewers gave it a high rating, not many found it good enough. However, since most of its reviews have been positive, it would be fair to say it is a universally loved Western movie.
Another universal opinion about the film is that it deserves to be classified as a "Horror Western." The reason being that it seamlessly blends traditional elements of Western cinema with the heart-pounding terrors of battling the unknown. Interestingly, however, even though the film unfolds a nightmarish narrative in the backdrop of a rugged frontier setting,...

Great news, FROMily: MGM+ has renewed “From” for a fourth season just as Season 3 is winding to a close! The bad news? “From” Season 4 won’t arrive for over a year.
The series is set to return to production in Nova Scotia in 2025, and premiere in 2026 with a 10-episode fourth season.
“From” is created and executive produced by John Griffin (Crater), directed and executive produced by Jack Bender (Lost, Game of Thrones, Mr. Mercedes), and executive produced by Showrunner Jeff Pinkner (Fringe, Alias, Lost).
The series “unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. There’s nothing quite like Rv horror. Inspired by an expanding national highway system and the proliferation of motor parks in the 1960s, this distinctive subgenre offers a unique blend of classic genre fare. Part home invasion, part road trip tale, part hicksploitation with a smidge of folk horror, the recreational vehicle becomes a home away from home and offers the illusion of safety while traversing strange locales. Jack Starrett’s Race with the Devil is arguably the first great entry in the Rv horror tradition, a criminally underseen film following two suburban couples on a road trip to hell.
Friends and business partners Frank (Warren Oates) and Roger (Peter Fonda) have just set out on an adventurous road trip from San Antonio, Texas to a ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado. Traveling in style, Frank shows off a brand new Rv with all the comforts of home: color television, microwave oven,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Every studio rejected it." These are the words of the late horror master Wes Craven, speaking in a 2014 oral history with Vulture regarding his 1984 cinematic classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." It's difficult to imagine the horror genre -- if not broader pop culture -- without Freddy Krueger in it, but it was, indeed, a Herculean task getting this now-classic horror movie made. "I have the rejection letter from Universal framed on my office wall," Craven added.
What's perhaps most amazing of all is that this wasn't even Craven's first film. The man that would eventually go on to save the slasher in the '90s with "Scream" already had "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on his resume,...

The film-maker’s 1984 shocker gave pop culture a new, physics-defying villain in the misshape of Freddy Krueger
From the beginning of his career, when he reworked Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring into The Last House on the Left, one of the nastiest (and smartest) exploitation horror films of the 1970s, the director Wes Craven had the unique ability to reconcile high-minded ideas with low-down genre kicks. In person, he had a professorial air because he was once, in fact, a professor, teaching English and the humanities at various north-eastern colleges before picking up a 16mm camera. He would turn The Hills Have Eyes into a cannibalistic shocker that doubled as a stark class critique and give the villainous couple of The People Under the Stairs the unmistakable echo of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. He understood as well as anyone how horror could be a vessel for larger themes, so...

One of the earliest episodes of The X-Files season 1, episode 8, Ice was a sly remake of John Carpenter's sci-fi horror masterpiece The Thing. A lot of The X-Files classic standalone Monster-of-the-Week episodes were influenced by iconic horror films. Season 4, episode 2, Home, is a slasher about a murderous family inspired by The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Season 6, episode 7, Terms of Endearment, subverts the story of Rosemarys Baby with its tale of a demon snatching an unborn child from its mothers womb.
The series premise of two agents working in the FBIs underground supernatural affairs division gave the writers the freedom to explore every horror trope and subgenre under the sun. The X-Files even did an episode parodying Cops with a werewolf on the loose: season 7, episode 12, X-Cops. The X-Files was taking inspiration from horror cinema from the very beginning. The desire to blend reality and fiction in film predates the Found Footage genre by literal decades, with classics like The Legend of Boggy Creek and even the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre dipping their toes into documentary-inspired filmmaking long before in-universe-cameras became popular.
Of course, it was only after The Blair Witch Project that creators would realize both the creative and financial potential of making movies like this – and when it comes to lucrative Pov thrills, very few could compete with Oren Peli and his DIY Paranormal Activity franchise. For over a decade, these films dominated the box-office with formulaic yet consistently entertaining scares made on a budget, with their success allowing the programmer-turned-filmmaker to invest in other spooky projects. And while I’ve already covered Peli’s over-hated Area 51 on a previous edition of The Silver Lining, today we’ll be discussing one of his most unique...

Warning: Spoilers for From Season 3, Episode 5!From follows a group of people who have become trapped in a mysterious town that is stalked by murderous creatures every evening. At the end of season 2, Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) discovered a way out, only to return with another resident's father (Robert Joy) shortly into season 3. This has turned everything upside down, as the townsfolk now believe they can also escape the horrors they have been dealing with for so long.
Catalina Sandino Moreno made her screen debut as the title character in Maria Full Of Grace, and is well known for her role as Luisa Leon in The Affair. Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” (Iconic/Cineverse) grossed about $27 million in the U.S./Canada in its first week. That will make it easily #1, helped by the second-week collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), which will end up #4 with around $10 million.
The slasher/horror sequel will ultimately earn a massive profit. With a reported production and marketing cost of around $5 million and additional revenues, “Terrifier 3” investors could easily see profits far exceeding $50 million.
Apart from its cost, other elements leading up to the slasher film’s success are unusual. As with any sleeper hit, its successes will be examined by studios to see if they can be replicated.
If “Terrifier 3” does lead to major changes, it will follow the lead of John Carpenter’s “Halloween” (1978) and Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s “The Blair Witch Project” (1999). And not just in terms of its impact on the horror genre.

Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.
Especially around Halloween.
USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.
See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.
Trapped (1989)

Directed by Fred Walton, Trapped was one of USA’s first World Premiere Movies. Here Kathleen Quinlan starred in what feels like a blueprint for P2.

One of the most iconic horror movies is celebrating a major milestone with A Nightmare on Elm Street's 40th anniversary. The 1984 film hailed from writer/director Wes Craven, who had built a solid filmography for himself up to that point with the likes of The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, and properly put him on the map as one of the genre's greats. From there on, Craven's genre spotlight would continue to grow with the likes of the now-cult classics The Serpent and the Rainbow and The People Under the Stairs and, eventually, launching the still-iconic Scream franchise with Kevin Williamson.
1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street told the story of Nancy Thompson, a teenager living in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio, who, along with her friends and boyfriend, find themselves tormented in their dreams by a mysterious figure who has the...

In the new psychological thriller/horror movie from Aja, as an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Rutger Hauer’s bedraggled, trench-coated hitchhiker John Ryder is everything the Joker always wanted to be, just without the film bro philosophising and cosplay-friendly get-up. A true agent of chaos who exists outside of rules, society, and possibly even reality itself. The way he appears and disappears, floating in and out of the worst day of hopeless everyman Jim Halsey’s life, showing up just in time to send another calamitous domino tumbling, is, very plainly, supernatural. A character who’s so far beyond the realms of reason or humanity, he’s practically primordial; more of a lesson than a person. Don’t trust strangers – you will be dragged kicking and screaming into a cross-country cat-and-mouse game that will surrender your very soul, and potentially get a little bit homo-erotic too.

About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. The finished film was given a theatrical release on September 20th (you can read our review Here)… and it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. It has only earned $21 million worldwide. Now it’s time for the movie to receive a PVOD release, so maybe it will be more successful when people are able to watch it in the comfort of their own homes. Lionsgate has announced they will be giving Never Let Go a Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through release on October 11th. A press release notes that the film “will be available to buy for $24.99 and to rent...

In celebration of A Nightmare on Elm Street’s 4K restoration — available on Digital today and on physical 4K Ultra HD on October 15 — living legend Robert Englund spoke to Bloody Disgusting about 40 years of Freddy Krueger and if he has one more performance left in him.
The actor had a feeling that A Nightmare on Elm Street was special during the production in 1984, but he didn’t know if it would reach an audience. “I just wanted people to see it, because I could tell we were onto something good. My girlfriend back then, who discovered several actors who’ve gone on to great success in Hollywood, she saw Johnny Depp for 20 seconds in the hallway the first week, and she said, ‘He’s going to be a star.'”

Since 2019, French filmmaker Alexandre Aja has received the best reviews of his career for a trio of genre films that include Crawl, Oxygen and his latest release, Never Let Go. Led by Halle Berry, the survival horror-thriller chronicles Berry’s single mother, “Momma,” as she looks after her fraternal twin boys in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world. The family resides in a remote cabin, and if they want to venture outside to find food and sustenance, they have to be tethered by rope so that an evil force can’t possess them in order to kill them off.
As expected, the Oscar-winning Berry gives yet another compelling performance, but arguably her most valuable contribution came as a producer. Knowing that the movie’s success hinged on whether they could find the right young actors to surround Momma, Berry insisted that the Never Let Go team leave no stone unturned en route...

A founding member of the “New Extremity” movement that brought French horror filmmakers to the attention of international audiences in the early oughts, writer-director Alexandre Aja parlayed his fearless, uncompromising approach to the horror genre into a filmmaking career into an international career outside of his native France. Beginning with a promising collaboration with Wes Craven, the 1976 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, through middling efforts and the one-off standout, Piranha 3D, Aja overcame mid-career stagnancy with Crawl, a bloody, gory, pulpy “animals amok” eco-horror. Aja’s latest horror film, Never Let Go, shifts the setting from the alligator-filled, riverside Florida town of Crawl or the terrors of outer space in Aja’s last film, Oxygen, to a post-apocalyptic forest somewhere in the...

Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.
And of course Hulu has “Huluween,” a celebration of the scariest titles either premiering on the streamer for the first time or simply highlighted from its existing library. That includes films like “Late Night with the Devil,” the series “Reginald the Vampire,” FX’s “American Horror Stories”, a Halloween specials from “Family Guy” and “Solar Opposites,” a docuseries on witch hunting, and much more.

Never Let Go is a new horror film that also happens to lean heavily into the realm of a family drama. It was brought to the screen by writing duo Kc Coughlin and Ryan Grassby and directed by Alexandre Aja, known for his past horror work including Crawl and The Hills Have Eyes. The movie stars Halle Berry as a motherunnamed, as far as the audience knowswho ensures that her twin sons never leave the house without a tether, ostensibly to keep them safe from deadly evil lurking in the woods.
The sons in question, Nolan and Samuel, are played by Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins, respectively. Director Alexandre Aja has certainly made his mark on the horror genre over the past 20 years. After bursting onto the scene in 2003 with the controversial High Tension, he weaved his way through American genre films with the remake of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes, the remake of Into the Mirror, the remake of Joe Dante’s Piranha, the adaptation of Joe Hill’s Horns, and the creature feature Crawl. Now, he’s unleashing his latest film Never Let Go, a mature fairy tale that sends him back into a world similar to the one he built in Horns eleven years ago.

Every small step the protagonists take forward is met with grueling steps back, courtesy of the mysterious puzzle box of horrors in the propulsive MGM+ series “From.” Or rather, the harder the humans fight to escape their bizarre purgatory, the crueler the enigmatic evil gets, aiming to crush their spirits before devouring them. And it’s evolving. “From” Season 3 picks up immediately from where Season 2 left off, and while the first five episodes screened for critics put us no closer to answers, one thing is certain: the gloves are now fully off for the horror.
Time is of the essence this season. The dawning realization that resources were growing scarce has snowballed into the very real possibility of starvation. Boyd (Harold Perrineau) faces a ticking clock of his own with an illness, one that’s emboldened him to fight back in his relentless pursuit to find salvation for the survivors.

Once upon a time, there was a filmmaker named Alexandre Aja. His career was fascinating in the way it wasn't strictly auteurist, for while every director has their unique stylistic tics and proclivities, not everyone has a distinctive, strong signature. Aja has certainly always been a genre filmmaker, one who's interested in subversion and twists, in playing around with the conventions of genre, and in being unafraid to use audience's sympathies against them. Whether it's been in the brutal, New French Extremity slashers of "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes," the gleefully exploitative "Piranha 3D," the literary roots of "Horns" and "The 9th Life of Louis Drax," or the suspense exercises of "Crawl" and "Oxygen," Aja has always found ways to surprise and upset (in every sense of the word) with his films.
All this is to say that, in the case of Aja's latest film, "Never Let Go,...

“Never Let Go” isn’t interested in reinventing familiar formulas when it comes to its unsettling spin on sinister spirits visiting a secluded cabin in the woods. With its inclusion of a protective mother and her two young kids attempting to escape an evil entity plaguing their world, it’s also unafraid to invite minor comparisons to “Bird Box.” Still, director Alexandre Aja’s psychologically taut feature blazes its own trail, dropping us into the middle of one family’s ghastly, worsening crisis, craftily drawing its scares from their interpersonal and intrapersonal strife. Though not all of its clever ideas come together efficiently in the finale, its thematic ruminations on grief, sanity, rebellion and redemption are intrinsically intertwined to harrowing, claustrophobic effect, heightening the hallucinatory horrors and dread-soaked atmospheric pull.

French director Alexandre Aja has been known as a member of the horror helming fraternity called the “Splat Pack,” named for the extreme violence in their films. Certainly, many of his pictures, from the 2003 breakthrough Haute Tension and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, to his exceptional, and most successful film to date, 2019’s Crawl — in which a family is trapped in the crawl space of their home as alligators surround them during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida (a personal favorite of Quentin Tarantino) — have proved his chops as a genre filmmaker. Now, he steps up to another level with a less gory and more psychological thriller style of film, Never Let Go, in which Halle Berry stars as a mother of twin boys who is traumatically haunted by her own lifelong demons, which she passes on to them in their remote house deep in the woods.

For many parents, convincing children to listen to your hard-won wisdom and avoid making the same mistakes for themselves is a daunting challenge. Adults are placed in charge of the world because they’ve lived long enough to experience its dangers firsthand, but each new generation is born convinced that no harm could possibly come from playing with those matches or staying out past that curfew. The contradictory desire to shield our offspring from the traumas that shaped us while allowing them enough independence to become fully fledged adults is often one of the defining questions of parenthood.
Alexandre Aja’s “Never Let Go” illustrates that age-old parenting challenge with a very literal metaphor. A woman known only as Mama (Halle Berry) lives with her sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) in a remote forest cabin where mere survival is an all-encompassing task. Years have gone...

Given how outrageous and over-the-top the horror franchise is, it is surprising that Wrong Turn is based on a true story to some extent. With seven films to date, the Wrong Turn franchise has been something of a sleeper hit with horror fans. The first movie in 2003 follows a group of travelers who end up meeting in the West Virginia backcountry after a cannibal family sabotages their cars and leaves them vulnerable to being hunted. The original movie was the only installment to get a theatrical release; the rest were launched in a direct-to-video format.
The three cannibals in Wrong Turn Saw Tooth, One Eye, and Three Finger got more of a backstory in future installments, with Wrong Turn 4 serving as a prequel to the series. The movie embraced the extreme gore and violence, with few characters surviving. Even with the outlandish ways the franchise evolved, the Wrong Turn series...

From visionary director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) and the creative minds behind Stranger Things and Arrival comes Never Let Go, a new psychological thriller/horror that's a must-see for anyone looking for a terrifying and compelling time at the theater on September 20.
In the movie, as an Evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother, played by Academy Award winner Halle Berry, and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go.
However, when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.
We recently had the privilege of sitting down with Berry to discuss how she figured out...

About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. Earlier this year, we saw the unveiling of a teaser poster, which just featured text on a snakeskin background (you can take a look at the teaser poster Here). Lionsgate is planning to give Never Let Go a theatrical release on September 20th – and with that date just three weeks away, a new trailer for the film has arrived online! You can watch it in the embed above.
Berry is joined in the cast by Percy Daggs IV (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) and Anthony B. Jenkins (Florida Man). Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine of 21 Laps are producing the film with Aja. Berry...

"After your rope broke, did you notice anything?" Lionsgate has unveiled a second trailer for Never Let Go, a dark woods horror from mastermind genre filmmaker Alexandre Aja. It's still set to open in September in just a few weeks from now. Never Let Go follows a mother and her fraternal twin sons who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years and are convinced to never let go of their family’s protective bond. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, their connection is severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. It's set almost entirely at a creepy old cabin in the woods. Halle Berry stars as the mother, with Percy Daggs IV & Anthony B. Jenkins as the two boys. The concept of this involving them all being tied together with this rope is nifty, I just hope it proves to be more...

Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

From the genre-defining classics A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream to such transgressive works as The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes to cult favorites like The People Under the Stairs and The Serpent and the Rainbow, Wes Craven’s reign of terror spanned not only decades but generations.
But there’s much more to the man than just horror movies. In Harker Press’ The Soul of Wes Craven, author Joseph Maddrey allows readers to see the entire person rather than just a collection of his work.
The Soul of Wes Craven is not the first biography on the master of horror, but it is the definitive one. If you’ve seen two 1970s horror movies, they were probably The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Alien. Interestingly, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspired the director of Alien in a major way. In addition, the director said Alien was similar to The Exorcist.

Calling all horror fans, we need your attention! We have some very good news to share. This just in: a sequel to the 2019 box office hit Crawl is in the works at Paramount Pictures with French filmmaker Alexandre Aja back to direct. More on this upcoming horror film below.
Titled Crawl 2, the sequel is reportedly in development at Paramount, with Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Project Almanac) writing the screenplay.
