Ice Spice has joined the cast of Spike Lee’s upcoming film High and Low, as Variety reports. The project will serve as the rapper’s acting debut.
Announced in February, Lee’s High and Low is an English-language remake of Akria Kurosawa’s 1963 original, which itself was a loose adaptation of Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, and is set to star Denzel Washington and feature Jeffery Wright. The project marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, with 2006’s Inside Man being their most recent meeting. A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures are developing and producing the project, while Lee and Alan Fox penned the script.

Actor Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee announced they are joining forces once more, the first time in 18 years, for a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low.” The duo have collaborated four times previously, on “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” “He Got Game,” and, most recently, “Inside Man.”
“High and Low” was originally based on the novel “King’s Ransom” by the prolific American author Ed McBain. McBain was a nom de plume for Evan Hunter, who also wrote “The Blackboard Jungle” (adapted to a popular film with a significant early turn by Sidney Poitier) and was a co-screenwriter of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.”
The original “High and Low” starred Toshiro Mifune as an executive who faces a moral crisis during a pivotal moment of his career—just as he had intended to move a vast amount of his personal wealth for business reasons, his son...

"Mo Better Blues." "Malcolm X." "He Got Game." "Inside Man." It is always an event when Spike Lee and Denzel Washington team up for a movie, and they always, always deliver. "Mo Better Blues" suffered from being Lee's follow-up to his masterpiece "Do the Right Thing," but its critical reputation has improved significantly over time. "Malcolm X" is probably the second most important (and brilliant) film about race next to "Do the Right Thing." "He Got Game" is an electric-yet-harrowing father-son drama set against the wanton corruption of college basketball. And "Inside Man" is just a plain old pip of a heist movie, one that makes you wish Lee would place his stylistic spin on more straight-up genre stories.
According to Variety, Lee is set to tackle one of the most masterfully crafted cop tales ever made, and you best believe he's re-teaming with Washington to bring it off.

Following Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man, Spike Lee and Denzel Washington are planning a reunion. With the director being on the longest break between narrative features since his debut in 1986, having last helmed 2020’s Da 5 Bloods, it’s now been unveiled he will direct a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low.
Variety reports that Washington will lead the project, scripted by Alan Fox and Spike Lee, and backed by Apple Original Films and A24. Based on Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, the original film starred Toshiro Mifune as a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a ruthless kidnapper.
High and Low will also mark Lee’s second high-profile remake after his 2013 feature Oldboy. With production beginning this spring, a theatrical release has also been confirmed––which we imagine will take place in 2025––followed by an Apple TV+ global bow.

Velvet Bullets and Steel Kisses: Celebrating the Nikkatsu Centennial was a sidebar at this year's New York Film Festival that Dan Sallitt, writing a couple of weeks ago, found "so exciting that it threatens to overshadow the main slate: a retrospective of the Japanese studio Nikkatsu, whose opportunistic shifts of focus always seemed to open doors for some of Japan's most creative filmmakers. Compare film magazine Kinema Junpo's 1999 and 2009 lists of all-time greatest Japanese films to the Lincoln Center series schedule, and count the overlaps." Last year in the Notebook, Dan reviewed one of the 37 films in the series, Tomu Uchida's Earth (1939).
"The sidebar is peppered with nearly impossible to see rediscoveries," notes Steve Dollar at GreenCine Daily: "early silent films like 1927's A Diary of Chuji's Travels and harshly realistic World War II dramas like Mud and Soldiers. Shot on location in China in 1939, the latter film blends...

Time is an annoying thing, it ticks away, aging us all and leaving behind things we meant to do, but never got around to. This is a statement that can be related to just about anything in our short lives, but in this case it happens to be my opening for a large batch of Criterion Collection Blu-rays I, shamefully, never got around to fully reviewing after mentioning them in my weekly DVD and Blu-ray columns. For some of you that is enough, for others you would like more, this is my attempt to clean off the shelves and start anew.
Let's get started...
Diabolique
Thanks to my trip to the Cannes Film Festival I got so backed up with my Criterion reviews I was never able to recover, so I'm heading as far back as May 17, when Criterion issued brand new DVD and Blu-ray editions of Henri-Georges Clouzot's Diabolique,...

Michelle Rodriguez has faced zombies, driven amazingly fast cars, helped save the world from an alien invasion, and tackled Machete with literally one eye open! There's not much left for her to do that could be considered pretty cool. Unless of course you set her up against evil spirits!
That's right, kids, shooting right now is the new cinéma vérité style spooker Sighting! The flick stars Rodriguez (pictured right) along with Kristina Anapau (Cursed, Black Swan), David Weidoff, Brendan Fletcher (Freddy vs Jason, Rampage) and Sarah Oh.
Sighting, from writer-director Tedi Sarafian, takes us to "King's Ransom Winery, one of the most haunted places in America, with a long history of bizarre suicides. Six ghost hunters have been given the rare opportunity to conduct a paranormal investigation. What they discover terrifies them."

Photo: Warner Bros. I was completely out of the loop when it came to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a film predominantly known at this point as the worst reviewed movie of the last decade by RottenTomatoes standards. So, when I decided I would follow in the footsteps of my previous look at Skyline and regularly take a look back at movies considered to be among the worst ever that I had not yet seen, there was no better place to start.
In short, yes, this is a bad film. Terrible in fact. Is it the worst? That's all relative to the discussion. Worst in what way? Plot? Characters? Execution? Entertainment? In all honesty, this is a film I would consider a perfect entry in a new age of grindhouse. All I could think of while watching the inexplicable amount of explosions, lack of story and silly predicaments was of Robert Rodriguez...

Coming to you this Sunday is another installment in the reality TV "feel good" series. Secret Millionaire takes you along for the ride as a millionaire searches for someone deserving of a large donation. Each week a new millionaire will embark on an adventure that showcases the needy, and will hope to not only connect with the "other side" of life, but run into someone trying to do great work who could use a benefactor.
In a style similar to Undercover Boss, we get to march along as the tremendously wealthy take a spin in the trenches, and along the way we are subject to the emotional pull of the downtrodden, and the curious joy of charity by proxy.

By the time its final episode premieres on December 11, "30 for 30" will have aired thirty films on the last thirty years of sports. Nine were about football, six about baseball, five about basketball, two about boxing, two about running, and one each about BMX, hockey, Nascar, rugby, soccer, and tennis. The series, designed to celebrate Espn's thirtieth anniversary, featured the work of thirty different directors, but through its entire range of filmmakers and topics, one theme dominated the year of "30 for 30": money's insidious effect on the purity of sports.
Consider its very first episode, "King's Ransom," about the trade of Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers' motivation? Money. Or "The Two Escobars," about the destructive impact of drug money on the Columbian national soccer. The pursuit of money was the obvious subject of some of the films, like "Small Potatoes: Who Killed the Usfl?...

Even if "Fable 3" doesn't include Kinect support at launch, it will have a King's ransom worth of Xbox Live Achievements to unlock, and you don't need to be intimately familiar with the series to understand why the list looks like a mash-up of "Fallout 3" and "The Sims" accomplishments. A little Ghostbusters humor may sneak up on you, however, but you'll understand why after you read the rundown below.
"The Ruler of Albion," "Coronation Chicken," "Dye Hippie, Dye" and "I Am The Keymaster" are all titles granted to achievements in "Fable 3," according to the game's new listing on Xbox360Achievements.org. You'll have to figure out how to pull all 50 of them off in both single and multiplayer modes in order to acquire the 1000 points available, but now that you know what they are, that shouldn't be a problem:

Traditionally, late April hasn't been the most exciting time at the box office, but Hollywood has been making more and more attempts to capitalize on the days leading up to the summer movie season. Five Years Ago - 2005 The Interpreter topped the box office with $22.8 million at 2,758 theaters. It was one of the biggest-grossing debuts for a political thriller at the time. In second, The Amityville Horror (2005) had a solid second weekend hold by horror standards, while Sahara held well in third. The other nationwide debuts were a bust: A Lot Like Love opened to $7.6 million, Kung Fu Hustle mustered just $6.7 million and King's Ransom was ignored with $2.1 milllion. * Weekend Report Ten Years Ago - 2000 Trying to offer summer excitement in April, U-571 emerged with a chart-topping $19.6 million at 2,583 sites. That was and still is the highest-grossing debut ever for a submarine thriller, although it didn't pack quite as many...

I haven't seen Akira Kurosawa's 1963 "High and Low," which I'm ashamed about. I'm ashamed about a lot of things.I know that the movie is based on the book "King's Ransom" by Evan Hunter and the Kurosawa iteration is closely linked to Asian culture (sorry guys who actually know - I'm grasping at straws). In 1999 Martin Scorsese and producer Scott Rudin optioned a re-make and set David to write the film. Now, that project has re-surfaced with Chris Rock as the new writer and Mike Nichols (dir "Closer," "Charlie Wilson's War") on board to direct.I'm actually greatly in favor of this, because it's shaping up to be interesting. As far as Chris Rock's drama adaptations go, the only one that exists is "I Think I Love My Wife," which was a remake of "Chloe in the Afternoon."He's also starring in "Death at a Funeral," a re-make as well,...

Chris Rock has been hired to polish a David Mamet script. Yes you heard that right.
The film is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's acclaimed 1963 detective thriller "High and Low" which itself is based on Evan Hunter's novel "King's Ransom".
The story follows a wealthy executive whose son has been kidnapped and he's prepared to pay the ransom using funds he needs for a critical corporate buyout. Before he can send the payment though, he realises the kidnappers have mistakenly abducted the child of his chauffeur and thus the decision becomes much more complicated.
Acclaimed scribe David Mamet was commissioned to pen the first draft of the screenplay over a decade ago by then producer Martin Scorsese (no word if he's still attached).
Now, Black Voices reports that Rock has been hired to pen a new draft of the script for Mike Nichols who will serve as director.

Brewer Directing Footloose, Crawford Bails: I have a hard time believing the departure of Chace Crawford and the attachment of Craig Brewer as director for the forthcoming Footloose remake is merely coincidental, then again I never thought I'd see Brewer going from Hustle and Flow to Black Snake Moan only to end up directing a remake of a Kevin Bacon '80s dance flick that once had Kenny Ortega attached to direct. So who knows, maybe it is coincidence. Paramount has said casting a new lead will begin immediately with production expected to begin this summer. [Variety]

Chris Rock revealed his next project to Black Voices: writing the screenplay remake/adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 detective thriller High and Low for director Mike Nichols. If you were going to ask me who might replace David Mamet on this modern day remake/adaptation, Rock would certainly have been near the bottom of the list. Here are the details from Bv: Based loosely on Evan Hunter's 'King's Ransom,' the story follows an executive named Kingo Gondo, who learns that his son has been kidnapped. He is prepared to pay the ransom amount until he discovers that the kidnappers mistakenly abducted the child of his chauffeur. Gondo must decide between keeping the money he has saved up for a critical corporate buyout or using it to save his driver's son. Mike Nichols's filmography includes Who's Afraid of Virgina Wolf, The Graduate, Catch-22, Annie, The Birdcage, Closer and Charlie Wilson's War.

Way back in 2008 we heard about a remake of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low, a 1963 detective thriller, which would be scripted by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Heist) and directed by Mike Nichols. It's been a long time since then and we haven't heard one bit of new information until today, and to be honest, it's not the most thrilling update, though it is rather peculiar. While out promoting another remake, Death at a Funeral, Chris Rock mentioned to Black Voices (via ComingSoon) that he will be writing a new draft of Mamet's script with Nichols still directing. Come on, guys, April Fool's Day is getting old at this point! The Kurosawa film was based on King's Ransom, a crime novel by Ed McBain, and starred Toshirô Mifune as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy, hardworking businessman. As Gondo plans a coup that will secure his position as the head ...

This week I was inspired by me recent purchase of "Akira Kurosawa: Master of Cinema" to watch a pair of Kurosawa films I had yet to see and then I finally got around to watching a Coen flick I had been neglecting for quite some time.
The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) Quick Thoughts: One look at my Netflix queue tells me I've had this film at my house since December 28, 2009. It only took three months for me to find the time to sit down and give it a watch when there wasn't anything more pressing asking for my attention. I wasn't avoiding it, I had actually tried watching it a couple of times and things just sort of ... got in the way. No matter, here it is, and I finally have it under my belt and it isn't all that bad, although it seems to be the least talked about...

When it comes to reviewing movies, I've always found that one of the most difficult things is not deciding whether a movie is good or bad, but rather, deciding whether a movie is bad or downright terrible. Make no mistake, there are many different levels of bad movies, but does anyone really care to get down to the nitty gritty of debating which ones are slightly better than others? It just seems like a colossal waste of energy. Fortunately, the good folks over at Rotten Tomatoes [1] have recently decided to sift through their vast review archives to give us the definitive Worst of the Worst list [2] for the past 10 years in film. I don't think there are too many surprises here, although the good news is that I think quite a few of these are movies that no one has seen. Maybe now they'll finally find the audience they deserve!

Ya know, it doesn't feel like we're nearing the end of another decade, does it? There's no special millennium celebration or Y2K nonsense to get excited about, so it seems people are just sorta whatever about the past decade as if it wasn't very monumental or iconic, except for the part where our African-American president said something geeky about Star Trek. But I bet all the best end-of-the-decade content is yet to come, and it looks like Rotten Tomatoes is getting things started by presenting us with the worst (reviewed) films of the decade ... which they probably should've waited a couple more months to launch since, ya know, we still haven't seen Avatar (I'm kidding Jim - I'm kidding! Calm down!).
So what's the worst reviewed film of the decade? Well, that honor goes to --drum roll please -- 2002's Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, starring the always enticing duo...

Mike Nichols, who has shown his filmmaking prowess with movies like Charlie Wilson's War and Closer, is heading into remake territory, with an announced project set to remake High and Low from classic filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. The 1963 picture was a detective story adapted from Ed McBain's King's Ransom which involved a kidnapping plot that led to a businessman's ruin. The new version of the movie will be directed by Nichols, who will use a David Mamet script that was originally commissioned by Martin Scorsese in 1999. The news comes from Variety, who announced casting hasn't started on the movie yet. While we're usually quick to leap on bad remake ideas, this one probably isn't that bad. As remarkable a filmmaker as he is, Kurosawa's work isn't known by the average filmgoer, so the movie will look pretty original to a lot of people. Remaking Kurosawa's work has proven...

'Interpreter' translates into top b.o. spot with $22.8 mil
Universal's The Interpreter was the lone standout among four wide releases this past weekend with the other three films producing languid to dismal results. Interpreter, a political thriller helmed by Sydney Pollack and starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, opened with $22.8 million to easily claim the top spot. The debut for Interpreter was a company high for Working Title Films and marked a personal best for Kidman and Penn in starring roles. Of the frame's other new wide releases, Buena Vista's A Lot Like Love debuted in the fourth spot with $7.6 million, followed by the first weekend of wide release for Sony Classics' Kung Fu Hustle with $6.7 million from 2,503 theaters, which takes the cume to $7.5 million. New Line Cinema's King's Ransom never made it out of the starting blocks as the comedy generated a meager $2.1 million from 1,508 theaters to latch on to the 10th spot. Last weekend's boxoffice champ, MGM's The Amityville Horror, slipped into second place with $13.7 million -- down a mild 42% from its debut. Films of the horror genre typically fall off 50%-60% or more on the second weekend. Amityville has conjured up $43.3 million in its first 10 days of release. Paramount's Sahara moved into the third spot as the action-adventure film kicked up $9 million, off a slim 31% in its telling third session. The Bristol Bay production, starring Matthew McConaughey and directed by Breck Eisner, has collected $48.9 million to date.
