Netflix has unveiled its 2025 content slate targeting India’s expanding streaming market. The company’s latest India lineup, shared Monday in Mumbai, is both sizable and diverse, spanning a plethora of genres across six feature films, 14 series and five unscripted titles — but it’s also more targeted than in recent years (Netflix released as many as 40 original Indian titles in 2021).
“Our 2025 slate promises a rich and varied lineup, from gripping dramas and thrilling heists
to heartwarming rom-coms and adrenaline-pumping action,” says Monika Shergill, Netflix’s VP of content in India. On the movie front, Shergill highlights tentpole projects like Aryan Khan’s grand Bollywood-themed series, The Ba***ds of Bollywood (The Bads of Bollywood), and Siddharth Anand’s high-stakes drama, Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, which “bring scale and excitement: to the slate. With her nomination this year for “The Journey” from the Netflix historical drama The Six Triple Eight, Diane Warren has now contended 16 times at the Oscars, including the last eight years in a row, for Best Original Song. But the veteran artist — who has a Grammy, an Emmy, and two Golden Globes in her trophy case — has yet to score a competitive Oscar. Could this be her year?
Warren does, however, have an Honorary Oscar, which she collected in 2022 for her impressive body of work. That made her the first and currently only songwriter to receive that recognition from the Motion Picture Academy.

Ever since Oscar season became a year-round affair catering both to industry professionals and movie buffs all over the world, there has been a tendency to pencil in certain contenders sight-unseen based on their previous awards success or showbiz prominence. If Steven Spielberg has a new film on the way, it's immediately a prohibitive favorite for at least a nomination. Meryl Streep in a drama about something timely or socially important? That's one Best Actress nod most likely spoken for.
It's always a mistake to think this way. This is something I learned in 2007, when, as a participant in an Oscar prognosticating poll, I predicted Academy Award nominations across the board for "Charlie Wilson's War." How could I not? A drama about the United States' involvement in Afghanistan directed by Mike Nichols (winner for "The Graduate") and starring Tom Hanks (winner for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump"), Julia Roberts (winner for...

A critically acclaimed 2014 historical drama climbed streaming charts following a related national holiday, becoming a success just one day later. Historical dramas have depicted plenty of important events throughout history, many of which are real events that had an important impact on the world. Some of the best historical drama movies of all time include Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, Mel Gibson's Braveheart, and some reflecting more modern events, such as Black Hawk Down. These films have stood the test of time as important parts of film history as a whole.
However, there have also been movies about particular instances in American history that have proven to be important and timely. This includes stories about civil rights, everything from the 2013 biopic 12 Years a Slave, to the 2013 drama Lee Daniels' The Butler. These films underscore the regrettable elements of the United States' history, but continue to resonate because of...

Interestingly, our top five for the nominees have never won an Oscar, despite one of them receiving three nominations including two Best Supporting Actor nods. However, three of these contenders have Emmys to their names to show for. And the other nominee is making waves this award season, with nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and BAFTAs.

Perfume Genius will return this spring with an album that he’s describing as one of the boldest artistic statements of his 15-year career. Glory, out March 28 on his longtime label Matador Records, is the seventh studio album from Mike Hadreas’ long-running art-rock project.
Lead single “It’s a Mirror” features a propulsive folk-rock arrangement under Hadreas’ voice as he sings about internal conflicts and longing for freedom: “What do I get out of being established?/I still run and hide when a man’s at the door.”

Perfume Genius is back. Today, Mike Hadreas has announced his latest album, Glory, along with a run of North American tour dates. He has also released a new music video for the album’s lead single, “It’s a Mirror.”
Due on March 28th via Matador, Glory sees Perfume Genius reunite with producer Blake Mills for what Hadreas described as his “most directly confessional” album to date, tackling themes of fame, isolation, and aging, especially focusing on how gay culture addresses one’s older years. “There’s a map for the first part,” he explained in a statement. “There’s books about hustlers and drinking and drugs and going out. And then, after that, there’s not a lot.”

Another year, another BAFTA snub for Denzel Washington.
The two-time Oscar winner has never been nominated by the British Academy and was snubbed again on Wednesday, missing out on a nomination in Best Supporting Actor for Gladiator II. The nominees were Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).
Washington’s shutout at BAFTA has been one of the most curious and high-profile slights in the group’s history. Over his nearly 50-year career, the actor has accrued nine acting Oscar nominations, winning Best Supporting Actor for 1989’s Glory and Best Actor for 2001’s Training Day, the latter of which made him the second Black man to prevail in lead. His first Oscar bid was for his supporting turn in Cry Freedom (1987), and his other nominations were in lead for Malcolm X...

It has been over two decades since Denzel Washington screamed ‘King Kong ain’t got sh*t on me’ in the legendary Training Day. The Antoine Fuqua directorial got Washington his second Oscar after he had previously won for Glory. The film was also a commercial success and the legendary combo was set to reunite for an epic gangster film again.
Alas, the workings of Hollywood do not always make way for dreams and Fuqua had to give up his dream of crafting his incredible gangster film with Washington again. The filmmaker mentioned how heartbroken he was after his version of American Gangster was shelved. The film ended up being made by Ridley Scott with Washington in the lead.

When Denzel Washington agreed to star in 2001's "Training Day," his casting attracted some controversy. The issue, it seems, was that the esteemed actor had never played a villain at that time, and the NAACP was adamant that he not squander the good will he'd accumulated over the past decade or so by doing so. For Denzel, however, showcasing his diverse talent overrode any obligation to maintain his clean cut public image, and the star not only proved he was more than capable of playing an antagonist, but won his second Oscar for the effort. All of which makes one wonder about a parallel universe version of Denzel's career — one in which he agreed to play a lead role in David Fincher's "Se7en" back in 1995.
Would the NAACP have objected to Washington starring in what Brad Pitt told the LA Times was "the feel-bad movie of '95"? Fincher's...

One of Denzel Washington's movies that is streaming on Disney+ was also one of the best sports movies ever, and the film to finish out his three-year trend. Since he started acting in feature films in 1977, Denzel Washington has cemented himself as one of the best actors of all time. The list of Denzel Washington's best movies is filled with all-time classics like Glory, Malcolm X, and Training Day. While he's mostly known for giving extremely intense and powerful performances in R-rated and mature films, Washington also has more than enough experience in lighter movies for audiences of all ages.
One of the many notable aspects of Denzel Washington's acting career is how varied his filmography is. Washington has done everything from historical biopics to war movies to action thrillers and comedies. For as many genres as Washington has branched out into, he's also dominated in each of them.

Denzel Washington has been an inspiration in every definition of the word. Being one of the most respected and successful actors of all time, there is a reason why he has the reputation he does. Be it a film series like The Equalizer or Oscar-winning films like Glory or Training Day, it is difficult to put him in a box.

It could have been very easy to typecast Washington and leave him in a specific kind of role for the rest of his career. However, he managed to push through this and became one of the most versatile actors in the industry. With this in mind, one can imagine that his career would also help others navigate getting typecast.
During an interview, Marvel star Benicio Del Toro revealed that Washington was a very big reason for how his career was shaped.

Few actors in Hollywood are as respected and admired as Denzel Washington. After getting his start in acting back in the late 1970s and having his first breakout role in the medical drama St. Elsewhere, in which he played Dr. Phillip Chandler on all six seasons, Washington has played a number of iconic characters in a variety acclaimed movies. Some of his most memorable early movies include Glory (1989), Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), and, of course, Training Day (2001). In fact, he has been nominated for 10 Oscars so far, winning two, for Glory and Training Day.
Starting in the mid-2000s, a career shift occurred and Washington became something of an action star alongside his continued work in more dramatic productions such as 2002's Antwone Fisher, 2007's The Great Debaters, and 2012's Flight. This new phase of Washington's career could largely be considered to start with Man on Fire in 2004. A handful of years later,...

Despite being some of the biggest movie stars on the planet, Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis only collaborated once in the late 90s, with their film being the center of a major controversy. The Siege was the first and only film the two did together, with each having massive hits both before and after they finally appeared in a movie together. Their films have endured for decades, and will continue to do so.
Denzel Washington has a particularly strong filmography in the '90s, with Malcolm X, Philadelphia, He Got Game, and Much Ado About Nothing. Bruce Willis was considered one of the best action stars of all time in that decade, starring in films like the Die Hard franchise, The Fifth Element, and Armageddon. When they finally collaborated on The Siege, it failed to live up to the lofty heights of the two star's other films, with the most...

By the end of the '90s, Denzel Washington had seemingly done it all. After his breakout role in arguably the best Civil War film ever made, 1989's "Glory," earned him an Oscar for best Supporting Actor, he went on to earn yet another Academy Award nomination for his performance in "Malcom X" in 1992 and "The Hurricane" in 1999. Throughout that time, he'd proven he was also more than capable of bringing his effortless charismas to less cerebral fare such as action thriller "Crimson Tide" and crime drama "The Bone Collector."
But by the end of the millennium there was still one thing Denzel had never done: play a bad guy. The actor was so naturally magnetic that it seems Hollywood never thought to waste such appeal on a villain, and so Denzel remained a good guy right up until 2001. Denzel Washington's career is mostly a model of consistency. Once he officially broke through with his Academy Award-nominated performance as South African activist Steve Biko in "Cry Freedom," he deftly alternated between prestige roles and strictly commercial parts. There were missteps, but you can at least understand why he signed on to a buddy comedy like "Heart Condition;" he hadn't won his Oscar for "Glory" just yet, and the opportunity to act opposite a tremendously talented performer like Bob Hoskins surely looked appealing in theory. The movie is dreadful, but neither Washington nor Hoskins phone it in.
And yet there was a sense among some in 1992 that Washington's brilliantly multifaceted performance in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" would put an end to such frivolities as "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." It's intriguing to consider what might've happened had the Academy not determined that '92 was the year to honor the...

Denzel Washington made his feature film debut over 40 years ago in 1981’s “Carbon Copy” and in the decades since has played everyone from real-life public figures such as civil rights activist Malcolm X and wrongly imprisoned boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter to crooked cops like Alonzo in “Training Day” and Joe Deacon in “The Little Things” to even William Shakespeare‘s most famed villain, Macbeth, in “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” His latest villainous turn is for the 2024 Ridley Scott sequel “Gladiator II.”
For his prolific nature and exemplary work, Washington has received numerous awards: he snagged his first Oscar nomination for 1987’s “Cry Freedom” and won his first Oscar two years later for 1989’s “Glory.” Twelve years after that, Washington made history when “Training Day” made him the first Black actor since Sidney Poitier (“Lilies of the Field” in 1963) to win in the Best Actor category. Why Did Denzel Washington Turned Down Brad Pitt’s Role In Se7en? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Imagine this: fresh off Malcolm X and Philadelphia, Denzel Washington could’ve starred in Se7en. But instead, he turned down the role of Detective Mills, and Brad Pitt stepped in, forever cementing his place as a leading man in Hollywood. Washington’s reasoning? Simple: he thought the script was “too demonic.” Fast forward, and while Denzel still regrets passing up the opportunity, we’re all left wondering what might’ve been.
Washington’s “no” to Se7en wasn’t because he was dodging dark material (he’d already taken on heavy roles like Glory). No, it was about the intensity of the script—the whole seven deadly sins thing just didn’t sit right with him. According to Collider, the story felt too grim for his taste. The actor told Jamie Foxx in a 2014 interview.

Denzel Washington recently shared a candid perspective on how his Oscar win for Glory impacted the trajectory of his career. Washington continues to deliver standout performances, most recently in Ridley Scott's Gladiator II as the former slave, Macrinus, who rises to become a ruthless power broker in ancient Rome. Washington's performance has been awash with praise for its intense blend of cunning and brutality, further demonstrating his range as one of Hollywood's most accomplished actors.
In a conversation with ScreenDaily, Washington reflects on how his early Oscar win for the historical war drama Glory influenced his filmography in the years that followed. Winning Best Supporting Actor for his role as the hardened Private Trip, in one of the Union's first Black regiments during the Civil War, cemented Washington's status as a leading man in Hollywood. However, he admits that the success brought unexpected challenges as the newfound stature...

Speculation about the potential Oscar nominees for the 2025 ceremony has begun, and it might break Denzel Washington and Mahershala Ali’s shared Oscars record. 2024 has seen a wide variety of successful movies that have won over critics and general audiences for different reasons. 2024 has also seen some strong and memorable performances from many well-known actors and a couple of surprises, so there’s some interesting competition regarding Oscar nominees for next year, so much so that some records could be broken.

Denzel Washington went a little bit into his dark childhood life when he was asked about his favorite Stanley Kubrick film. It turned out that the actor wasn’t a huge movie buff in his formative years and ran with the wrong group at the time. Washington didn’t start seriously watching films until he was in his twenties when a talent show proved his acting capabilities.

Denzel Washington is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood right now, and luckily several of his movies are currently streaming on Netflix. Washington first gained attention on the TV series St. Elsewhere in the 1980s, and quickly began to grow in popularity with roles in films such as A Soldier's Story and Power. In 1990, Washington's role in Glory earned him his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, further solidifying his stardom. Since then, Denzel Washington has been nominated seven times for Best Actor, and he has appeared in some of the best movies of the 21st century.
Most recently, Denzel Washington starred as Macrinus in Gladiator II, creating a perfect reminder to revisit some of his past performances. Up until now, we have seen vanishingly little of Vox Lux director Brady Corbet's hotly anticipated next film, The Brutalist — but we have heard plenty about it. Fresh off the back of a bunch of Golden Globes nominations, Corbet's Oscar-tipped movie — a three-and-a-half hour long epic that follows architect László Toth (Adrien Brody) and his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) as they flee the horrors of the Holocaust to chase the American Dream in post-war Philadelphia — has already been acclaimed for its stellar cast, monumental scale, and There Will Be Blood evocative sense of sweep and Great American storytelling. Now, thanks to the full trailer A24 just put out for the movie, we're getting our first glimpse at what's already shaping up to be one of the biggest films — in every sense — of 2025. Check it out below:

The first social reactions for Mufasa: The Lion King have clawed their way online following last night's world premiere and, for the most part, they're positively roar-some (sorry).
It appears the prequel is a major improvement over 2019's The Lion King thanks to its original story and Lin-Manuel Miranda's (Hamilton) epic soundtrack. Complaints focus on possible pacing issues and the odd drawback that comes with any prequel.
Despite that, it sounds like we're in store for something special with this one and the praise being heaped on Barry Jenkins' movie overshadow any niggles critics might have.
Heading into the holidays, Mufasa: The Lion King will go head-to-head with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in what's expected to be a close battle. Neither Kraven the Hunter nor The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will likely pose much competition after opening this weekend.

Pamela Anderson is setting the record straight on her marriage record. Specifically, the newly minted Golden Globe-nominated star of Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl would like the world to know that she never actually tied the knot with veteran Hollywood producer Jon Peters.
During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg on his Awards Chatter podcast, the executive editor of awards asked Anderson to reveal “the biggest misconception about you?” The 57-year-old actress wasted no time in coming up with an answer. “That I’ve been married six times instead of four,” she explained. “I never was married to Jon Peters. Do you want to know the Jon Peters story?”
Of course Feinberg welcomed the anecdote, and Anderson dove right in.

Best Song Written for Visual Media is especially interesting to predict at the Grammys since you can also take into account the Emmys, Oscars, and other visual media prizes. But this year’s five nominees are mostly what you expect from a category like this, with Grammy-loved artists and big hits making up the lineup.
You can probably rule out a couple of songs. Barbra Streisand’s “Love Will Survive” was an unexpected nominee, and while it features songwriting from legendary composer Hans Zimmer, songs from TV programs rarely win here, and it doesn’t help that “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” had limited buzz. Next, “Better Place” from “Trolls Band Together” was a decent-sized hit overall, peaking at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Plus, the nostalgia around Nsync’s reunion could leave many wanting to reward them. However, “Trolls” and the song peaked long ago, and voters might decide this...

Plus, the nostalgia around Nsync’s reunion could leave many wanting to reward them. However, “Trolls” and the song peaked long ago, and voters might decide this...

Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. Having built a grand career defined by powerhouse performances and critical acclaim, his influence expands beyond domestic boundaries. Yet, despite all the fame he has achieved, the actor has never been a box office king, like his contemporaries.

Denzel Washington is on his way to making Oscar history for his performance as a former slave who plots to be the emperor of Rome in Paramount Pictures’ “Gladiator II,” the latest from director Ridley Scott. Right now, he has two Academy Awards to his name for “Glory” (1989) in Best Supporting Actor and “Training Day” (2001) in Best Actor. If he were to prevail for “Gladiator II” in early 2025, he would join an exclusive list of seven other people to win at least three times in the acting categories.
Here are the actors who have achieved this important Oscars milestone:
Katharine Hepburn (4)

Brad Pitt's best movies feature him in a variety of interesting roles, from the chaotic Tyler Durden in Fight Club to the Nazi-killing soldier Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds. However, one of his most beautifully tragic portrayals comes in the form of Tristan Ludlow, the lead character in the 1994 Western epic, Legends of the Fall. Based on Jim Harrison's 1979 novella of the same name, the film follows Tristan as he and his brothers, Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Samuel (Henry Thomas) enlist in World War I. The film explores the domino effect this decision has on Tristan's life.
Legends of the Fall is a drama film directed by Edward Zwick, starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Aidan Quinn. Set in the early 20th century, the movie follows the lives of the Ludlow family, focusing on the complex relationships between three brothers and their father against the backdrop of dramatic historical events.

Denzel Washington absolutely runs off with “Gladiator II” as scheming Roman power broker Macrinus, a former slave whose end game is to become the new emperor.
It’s one of the two-time Oscar winner’s best performances in his nearly 40-year career and one where he gets a chance to go as big as he did in “Training Day.” The way he puts a spin on the words “politicssss” and “too much!” is the actor having possibly the best time of his life with a role.
As “Gladiator II” producer Douglas Wick told TheWrap at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, the actor’s riffs and unexpected line deliveries are like jazz. “I think of him as a jazz musician the melody is psychological truth. It’s an amazing thing to watch. He’ll keep the psychological truth, but he’ll play with it this way and he’ll play with it that way,...

Spike Lee argues that Denzel Washington should’ve won Best Actor for their 1992 biopic, and explains why exactly he lost. Washington was among the nominees when the Oscars for Best Actor were handed out in 1992, having given a powerful performance as Malcolm X in Lee’s unconventional portrait of the slain civil rights leader. But when Oscar night rolled around, Washington was left empty-handed. Instead, Al Pacino took the gold for his performance as a blind man in Scent of a Woman. The controversial decision continues to draw arguments even 30 years after the awards were officially handed out.
Debate rages on about Pacino’s controversial 1992 win over Washington, and Lee knows exactly where he falls in that argument, telling The Realest Podcast Ever that Washington’s loss was “egregious” while going on to explain how the Academy sometimes passes over worthy nominees to reward people they previously snubbed. Denzel Washington has won two Academy Awards in his career after earning a total of ten nominations. For the film Glory, he earned his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. After that 1990 win, Washington put in his best efforts to win another Oscar. During this period, he almost gave up on his Oscar dream after coming so close to winning the Best Actor twice.

Denzel Washington has appeared in countless major films during his career, including epics like “Glory,” “Malcolm X,” and “American Gangster.” But not even the two-time Oscar winner had experienced a set like what director Ridley Scott and production designer Arthur Max built for “Gladiator II.”
“This is the biggest film I’ve been on,” Washington said in a new featurette for “Gladiator II” that Gold Derby can exclusively reveal above. “It’s Cecil B. DeMille on steroids.”
Directed by Scott, “Gladiator II” is more than 20 years in the making: the filmmaker started developing the sequel just after the 2000 original film won Best Picture. Released last week, “Gliadator II” is already a hit – it topped $225 million at the global box office through Sunday – and is widely expected to compete for several Oscar nominations next year, including Best Picture, Best Director for Scott (who has rather infamously never won an Oscar despite...

Denzel Washington is renowned as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Acting since the late 1970s, Washington has been nominated for numerous Oscars for his acting work, winning awards for Glory and Training Day. An actor on both the stage and screen, Washington's career is characterized by his distinguished dramatic roles in works like Fences and Malcolm X. In more recent days, the beloved actor made a statement that suggested he might retire. Luckily for his fans, however, Washington later clarified that he would simply be more selective and continue more behind-the-scenes work, rather than retire completely.
In addition to his Oscar nominations, Washington has also been in a number of blockbuster films. Franchise-wise, this has notably included Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer trilogy. Those films have collectively made nearly $600 million at the worldwide box office, becoming a major contributor to Washington's overall box office. While this is Washington's main franchise draw,...

One stunt in a Denzel Washington action movie nearly went horribly wrong, a stuntman reveals. Throughout his career, Washington has appeared in many celebrated roles, winning Oscars for his performances in Glory and Training Day. He continues to expand his filmography alongside well-known Hollywood talent. Unlimited in terms of range or genre, some other credits include Malcolm X, Much Ado About Nothing, Remember the Titans, American Gangster, and Fences (which he also directed). However, it has been Washingtons action thriller roles that do particularly well at the box office, as evidenced by The Equalizer franchise.
Among his more famous movies is 2004s Man on Fire, where he played John W. Creasy, a former CIA agent who targets criminals responsible for kidnapping Lupita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). That film marked Washingtons second collaboration with the late Tony Scott, having already starred in Crimson Tide. The pair would reunite for three more riveting productions,...

Spoilers for "Gladiator II" follow.
It makes for a refreshing change of pace that one of the biggest films of the year doesn't come with a costumed crime fighter or Tom Cruise leaping small buildings in a single bound. Instead, all eyes are on Paul Mescal squaring up against a rhino and the corrupt Roman Empire in "Gladiator II." Harking back to the big-screen epics of old just like the film that preceded it, Ridley Scott's return to the era of togas and treacherous rulers has plenty of sword and sandal based action, but there are some beats that might feel familiar to both Marvel and DC fans in regards to certain characters.
While "Gladiator II" director Ridley Scott may have turned down some superhero movies, there are a few heroes and villains in his latest film that mirror twists and turns reminiscent of some highly-talked about moments in comic book movie history.

Denzel Washington has led many lives. Not just through his performances in films like “Glory,” “Malcolm X,” and more recently “Gladiator II,” but also in his personal life and the various phases he’s gone through in becoming the man he is today. In a recent piece for Esquire, Washington spoke in his own words on the path he’s walked and how he’s infused it into the characters he played over the years, but never let it become part of him.
“Those characters I played in ‘Training Day,’ in ‘American Gangster’ — it might look like they were close to me, and I could tell you they were, but I wasn’t no gangster,” said Washington. “I ran with them real gangsters down there, but I was not them. So let me not tell that lie to you. I had one foot in the streets, but I ain’t no killer.

Faith is a tricky subject and it gets even trickier when talked about in a public platform. Many actors have shied away from discussing religion publicly in order to not alienate any of their fan bases, but not Denzel Washington.
The Gladiator II star has been vocal about his faith and the impact religion had on his personal life and career for a long time now. Washington emphasized curating a strong bond with the heavenly being on several occasions but his recent statement might hurt some sentiments. The Malcolm X actor said that people in Hollywood did not like talking about religion and his views burned a lot of bridges. Atheists may not like to hear this, but according to the actor religious stars did not earn major accolades.

Denzel Washington recalls his bitterness over losing out on two Oscars, revealing that he stopped voting. Washington remains one of the most respected actors working in Hollywood today, appearing in popcorn hits and prestige awards fare. He can next be seen as part of the cast of Gladiator 2. Washington has been widely celebrated at various awards ceremonies, including the Academy Awards, winning two and being nominated for eight others since 1988's Cry Freedom.
In a recent piece he wrote for Esquire, recounting key moments of his life in his own words, Washington reveals that he didn't take two particular Oscar losses very well. He was nominated for both Malcolm X (1992) and The Hurricane (1999), losing to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman (1992) for the former and Kevin Spacy for American Beauty (1999) for the latter.

Denzel Washington is looking back on how he felt after losing the Best Actor Oscar to Kevin Spacey in 2000. The Gladiator II star, who had already won one Oscar and earned three other nominations before that ceremony, was nominated again for playing Rubin Carter in 1999’s The Hurricane.
He competed against Spacey for American Beauty, Russell Crowe for The Insider, Richard Farnsworth for The Straight Story, and Sean Penn for Sweet and Lowdown. In the end, Spacey took home the award, though Washington did win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama that year.
“At the Oscars, they called Kevin Spacey’s name for American Beauty,” Denzel remembers. “I have a memory of turning around and looking at him, and nobody was standing but the people around him. And everyone else was looking at me. Not that it was this way. Maybe that’s the way I perceived it.

In a recent Esquire magazine interview, actor Denzel Washington shared a profoundly personal chapter of his career, detailing how losing the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2000 sparked 15 years of anger with Hollywood’s most coveted prizes.
Washington vividly recalls when Kevin Spacey was revealed as the winner of “American Beauty,” a recollection that still evokes strong emotions. “I have a memory of turning around and looking at him,” he stated, conceding the subjective nature of his remembrance.
Washington’s loss was not her first Oscar setback. He was previously nominated for “Malcolm X” in 1993, but came in second place to Al Pacino. Despite having previously won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Glory” in 1990, the 2000 setback hit home.
In response to his displeasure, Washington removed himself from the Academy Awards and even delegated voting rights to his wife, Pauletta. “Don’t they care about me? “I don’t care,...
