Sally teams up with a ex-gunfighter Cyrus Pike to travel west. On the way her interest in people has Sally helping Orkie who's battling the railroad for his land.
Sally's trusty mule is stolen leaving her outraged. But when she finds out the thief is a homeless six year old Sally tries to find a solution to the boy and his sibling's problems.
Sally and Cyrus encounter an old friend of Sally's, newly retired from the army. The man has decided his life no longer has purpose so he gets drunk everyday. Sally devises a way to give him hope.
Pike wants to sell horses to the army but Sally wants nothing to do with it. But wants she learns Pike is involved with Parker, a notorious cheat, she decides to get involved.
Sally and Cyrus encounter an elderly woman Louisa, who is ill, living by herself in the wilderness. She is waiting for her grandson to return so she can die but her new friends doubt the man will come back.
Pike is duped by a young card shark who makes him believe she is willing to get back home. Sally distrusts the girl and attempts to dissuade Pike from giving her away an expensive diamond ring.
Pike is cast in a play along with a traveling troupe of actors. So taken with his ability Cyrus becomes so conceited that Sally must figure out a way to deflate his ego.
Minister Lucius Collier confesses to Sally that he's not an ordained pastor on his deathbed. Instructed to tell his followers things get complicated for Sally when Collier recovers.
As Sally and Cyrus arrive in town he's arrested for being a horse thief, convicted and his hanging decided. Sally must prove her friend innocent before it's too late.
