Mario Bava, often celebrated as a master of Gothic horror and Italian genre cinema, brought to life a diverse array of films that showcased his visual ingenuity and flair for mood and atmosphere. Planet of the Vampires, a standout entry in the realm of science fiction horror, epitomizes Bava’s commitment to stylistic audacity and thematic exploration. This review examines how this film fits into and enriches Bava’s oeuvre, highlighting the characteristics that align with his broader body of work.
Bava’s films are renowned for their distinctive visual style, characterized by deep chiaroscuro lighting, saturated colour palettes, and intricate set designs. Planet of the Vampires is no exception, showcasing these traits within the context of a futuristic,...

Mario Bava’s The Whip and the Body is a Technicolor fever dream of violent, unquenchable desire that extends beyond the grave. It’s also a gothic tale steeped in murder and revenge, with added elements of sadomasochistic eroticism and just a whiff of necrophilia. Wedged between Black Sabbath and Blood and Black Lace in Bava’s canon, The Whip and the Body shares those films’ consummate use of color cinematography to refine mood and convey disturbing shades of atmosphere. Acting as his own cinematographer, with credited Dp Ubaldo Terzano working as de facto camera operator, Bava revels in a riotous palette of sickly greens, otherworldly purples, and sanguine reds.
The opening of The Whip and the Body brings to mind Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, an equally disturbing tale of mad love that was celebrated by the surrealists. Heathcliffe stand-in Kurt Menliff (Christopher Lee) returns to his seaside castle...

One of the best reviews of any piece of media was Andy Klein's review of the 2004 film "Christmas with the Kranks," printed in the now-defunct CityBeat weekly. Because of the foibles of online archiving and the shuttering of many news outlets in 2004, CityBeat articles are no longer available. But in his review, Klein likened Joe Roth's anti-classic to the rise of fascism in Europe, holding the film's Dan Aykroyd character as leading a Nazi-like neighborhood charge against the people on their block -- the leads, played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen -- who would dare, Dare, to...

“Do you remember Limited Too?” Pearl Charles asks. She’s trying to trace just how far back her love of Abba goes, which brings her to the Nineties pre-teen clothing store. “Everything was flower power and bell-bottoms, and I feel like ‘Dancing Queen’ was huge at all the birthday parties. All of that stuff steeped into my brain when I was a little kid, and now it’s all coming out.”

If you’ve heard about Another Round, the Oscar-nominated Danish film starring Mads Mikkelsen, you probably know about the Dance. It happens at the end of writer-director Thomas Vinterberg’s tragicomedy about four middle-aged high school teachers who attempt an experiment in magical drinking; entire features and paeans have already been written about it. Sitting on a park bench as his students whoop and holler near a pier, Mikkelsen’s history professor tentatively starts doing a two-step. Then he bursts into the sort of musical dance routine — leaping, twirling, sliding...

Last week saw both Kandy Muse and Olivia Lux in the bottom two with Olivia been told to leave the competition. She had only been doing drag for just over a year so to get this far in the competition (beating out drag icons such as Tina Burner and Tamisha Imann) is incredible! I can’t wait to how much she will progress over time and I am sure she is destined for great things as she gains more and more experience. Though I don’t understand how Kandy was allowed to progress with that messy pocket inspired outfit as I thought it was the worst outfit I have seen… since her alien look a few weeks ago! But this led to a very interesting discussion led by Bob the drag queen (who was the winner of season 8) where she talked about how a designer had made the outfit, so...

Bob Odenkirk is accustomed to playing a character whose greatest weapon is his gift of gab, but in Nobody, his action movie debut, the Illinois native is finally letting his fists do the talking. Written and produced by two-thirds of the John Wick brain trust, Derek Kolstad and David Leitch, Ilya Naishuller’s Nobody centers on Odenkirk’s Hutch Mansell, whose dark past is unlocked by a home invasion. After his own Los Angeles home was burglarized twice, Odenkirk pitched the idea for Nobody to Leitch and his producing partner Kelly McCormack. And while they were putting the movie together, Odenkirk spent nearly two years training ...

After 14 years, 20 seasons, hundreds of episodes, and endless spinoffs, it's almost time to bid adieu to Keeping Up With the Kardashians. The final season of the long-running E! reality show is upon us, but if you know the Kardashians, then you know this isn't really goodbye. In December 2020, the Kardashian-Jenner clan signed a multi-year deal to "create global content" that will be streamed exclusively on Hulu and Star, though little is known yet about what kind of content the famous family has in mind. But according to Kuwtk co-creator and executive producer Ryan Seacrest, the reality stars "have a stack of ideas" for what comes next.
As Ryan explained to People during a January 2021 interview, "I think they have a lot of ideas and [will do] a lot of things that they may have not had a chance to do with Keeping Up with the Kardashians, because it was such a strong...

The Masque of the Red Death, Roger Corman’s masterful 1964 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, has been fully restored and can now be seen in all its diabolical splendor. The seventh of eight “Poe Cycle” films Corman made in the 1960s, Masque is arguably the best. Before its release, Poe had already delivered Corman from the low budget black and white films he shot in 10 days in the 1950s to the relative luxury of three-week shoots and psychedelic underworlds.

Photo: Neo-Noir Films If you have access to social media, you would know that recognizing change and growth in time are more vital than ever before. There comes the point in appreciating and putting value on those who began what we now know and learning that our world is not the same from which we have learned. The standards, laws, values, and much more were made at a point in time we would find ourselves bamboozled by if we were to live in it. Women were bound to homes without a voice or say for anything. Black men, women, and children were bound by chains and threatened at every moment in their lives. The only technology we knew was a lightbulb, and so much more that would be abnormal to exist in our current world. If being Venom was like being in the Beatles, then Peter Parker would be Pete Best. His stretch of time in the late-80s wearing his living, black costume is a staple of his history. Before it turned Eddie Brock into a box office giant, the symbiote made for a badass variant look for Spider-Man that still holds up to this day. It’s the ultimate story of how we can lose ourselves to power, even if a loved one beat you over the head with lessons about responsibility.

The following contains spoilers for Servant season 2.
In case season 1’s 10 episodes hadn’t already made it apparent, Servant is a very strange slow-burn of a show. This series begins with the creepy concept of a young couple bringing in a nanny to take care of their lifeless doll son and only gets more bizarre from there.
That offbeat sense of unease reaches its height in the Servant season 2 premiere, “Doll.” This half hour finds the Turner family dealing with the immediate aftermath of the season 1 finale when maid Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free) disappeared with the Turners’ baby…or what they think is their baby, leaving behind the original doll. What’s even stranger, however, is that Sean Turner’s (Toby Kebbell) sudden loss of smell and taste has evolved into a loss of the sense of touch as well.

Netflix has long since blown past the snooty preconceptions of the Hollywood elite that dubbed them as a mere streaming service, with the company currently churning out some of the most acclaimed shows on television and countless feature-length awards season contenders on an annual basis. The old guard tried to resist the inevitable paradigm shift for as long as possible, but based on both the quantity and quality of the in-house originals, Netflix can now comfortably be viewed as genuine rivals to the traditional major studios.
Of course, that takes a whole lot of investment, with close to $20 billion being funnelled into content last year, and that number only set to rise even higher. The Coronavirus pandemic may have decimated the theatrical industry, but Netflix has seen their subscriber count and viewership numbers continue to grow. High school cheerleader Molly woke bound and gagged in the trunk of her boyfriend's car. That was the high point of her night. After escaping and fleeing into the nearby forest, she comes face-to-face with the town urban legend: The Hangman, a deformed zealot said to lynch male trespassers and keep the women as "brides". Star Trek: Deep Space Nine successfully expanded what Star Trek could be. Before this, every Trek property followed roughly the same template of a ship boldly going where nobody has gone before, encountering a weekly conundrum and solving it over the course of about an hour. It’s a winning formula, but DS9, set on a space station adjacent to a strategically vital wormhole, wasn’t afraid to get complicated.
There were a number of episodes that explored the high concept sci-fi you expect from the franchise, but there were also ones examining interstellar trade, political manoeuvring and the morality of the Federation (and its complex relationship with the rest of the galaxy). It was rich, compelling and a big influence on the shows that followed it. Deep Space Nine‘s reputation has only increased over the years, too, especially with the series being available to stream.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures has made a deal to craft a new version of Saigon Bodyguards. The studio will make a high-octane action comedy based on the Vietnamese film of the same name. Chris Pratt, fresh from wrapping Jurassic World: Dominion for Universal, is attached to star in the film with Wu Jing, the star of the blockbuster Chinese franchise Wolf Warrior.
Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck are writing the script. Pratt will produce through his Indivisible Productions alongside Joe and Anthony Russo and Mike Larocca, who will produce through their Agbo production banner.
The film reunites the Russos with both Pratt, who brought his Guardians of the Galaxy to their Avengers films, and with Wu Jing. The Russos were consultants on Wolf Warriors 2, which is the highest-grossing film ever in China with $877 million in ticket sales there. In fact it’s the highest-grossing non-English-language film ever.

Warrior Season 2 Episode 6 heads for the Mexican border for a No Holds Barred tournament that has been teased all season long. Apart from Ah Toy’s (Olivia Cheng) trips to Nellie’s (Miranda Raison) Sonoma winery in the previous episode, Warrior seldom leaves San Francisco except for one notable exception – Season 1 Episode 5: “The Blood and the Sh*t.” That was an outlier tale where Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji) and Young Jun (Jason Tobin) were transporting a coffin and got trapped by bandits in a desert saloon with several bystanders.
With undertones of The Seven Samurai, it was an homage to spaghetti westerns, complete with a classic ride into the sunset and even a “The End” credit. It was one of the best episodes of Season 1, almost a standalone story because it did nothing to advance the overarching tale, while this new episode is pivotal...

Warrior Season 2 Episode 5
The episode opens with Li Yong (Joe Taslim) doing some shirtless Kung Fu but the scene is too short to determine what style he is doing. Perhaps it’s something just made up for Warrior. Taslim’s background is in in Judo, not Kung Fu, but that doesn’t matter. He looks great doing whatever he’s doing and it’s a promising opening for this episode.
The previous two episodes lacked enough Kung Fu to satisfy dedicated Bruce Lee fans. Fortunately, this episode makes up for that and then some. It’s the strongest episode in Season 2 so far, both dramatically and choreographically.
It’s a rough one for Penny (Joanna Vanderham) as her world collapses. As she inspects the devastation of Mercer Steel after Leary’s (Dean Jagger) terrorist bombing, she asks Jacob (Kenneth Fok) “What is that terrible smell?...

Amazon Studios has ordered a new YA horror series ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ from Sony Pictures Television.

The project is based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan and is produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Sara Goodman will write and executive produce along with executive producers Shay Hatten, Original Film’s Neal Moritz and Pavun Shetty and Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Rob Hackett and Michael Clear.

This Helstrom review contains no spoilers.
The first episode of Hulu’s final Jeph Loeb produced Marvel series (aside from the upcoming animated offering M.O.D.O.K.) Helstrom has everything you’d expect from the kind of straight-to-streaming exorcism movie you stumble across on a boring Sunday afternoon and immediately regret watching. There’s expository newspaper clippings about terrible crimes, fake exorcisms broken down by a cynically droll demonologist, a new fresh out of the church Vatican believer who wants to do good, creepy diary entries that look like they’ve been scrawled by demonic child, and a lot of sepia toned flashbacks. From the outset there’s a distinct lack of imagination that makes the newest Marvel show feel dated and derivative, which is fitting because the first three episodes are just that.

It's been a while since a Netflix film prompted me to write in my cinephile What's App group chat: "ok everybody, I have a fun movie to suggest." After the boring disappointments of The Devil All the Time and Project Power, after the unspeakable horrors I witnessed in The Last Days of American Crime, I confess I log in my Netflix account holding my breath. Enola Holmes brought a sigh of relief. Nothing life-changing, mind you, just a fun, entertaining movie that reimagines the canon of Sherlock Holmes, the classic of classics. Conan Doyle's detective is one of the few fictional characters who keeps getting adapted in fresh ways without ever wearing out his welcome.

Close to one hundred thousand people have backed the petition for Netflix to remove steamy Polish thriller 365 Days from the content library, but the latest data has only reinforced the controversial movie’s popularity. It may hold a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it dominated the streaming service’s most-watched list for weeks and now that the numbers have been crunched, it can be named as the platform’s biggest hit of 2020 so far.

By the dawn of the Seventies, the protest song was considered as much a relic of the previous decade as the word “groovy,” with notable exceptions like Edwin Starr’s “War,” Neil Young’s “Ohio,” and Bob Dylan’s “George Jackson.” As Arlo Guthrie told Rolling Stone this summer, “The music business went from figuring out how they could make some money selling protest songs to realizing, ‘Well, they don’t really sell that well, so we’ll move on to something else.’ Which they did.”

Stars: Catherine Morvell, Jesse Boum, Gabrielle Pearson, Charles Jazz Terrier, Taylor Pearce, Aly Zhang, Maximillian Johnson, Ace Whitman, Erina Yamada, Tim K Williams | Written and Directed by Sam Hamilton
“I like filmmaking. Mostly amateur stuff…” What Goes Around certainly comes around in this terrific slasher throwback and snuff film extravaganza!
Erin (Catherine Morvell) is a vulnerable and reserved college student. Working in a cafe, she is abused and taken advantage of by the customers. It’s unfair, disgusting, and is just another layer of annoyance present in an already difficult life. Alex (Jesse Bouma) – a customer within the cafe and fellow student – intervenes in one situation, leading to a connection established with Erin. As nice as this may seem, she’s just caught the attraction and attention of a mysterious boy who’s best left avoided.
Miraculously (and dangerously), Erin comes into possession of Alex’s laptop – he accidently leaves it behind in the cafe.
