Hal Wallis Productions bought the film rights to the play in 1952, shortly before its Off-Broadway revival, for $100,000.
The original Broadway production of the Tennessee Williams play "Summer and Smoke" opened Oct. 6, 1948 at the Music Box Theatre and ran for 102 performances. Headlined by Margaret Phillips as Alma and Tod Andrews as John Buchanan, the play had in it supporting cast Anne Jackson as Nellie Ewell and Ray Walston as Archie Kramer.
Rita Moreno made this film in the same year she made her Oscar winner (for Supporting Actress), West Side Story (1961).
