Collectors and enthusiasts of the serials produced by Republic Pictures Corporation (1936-1955) have reason to rejoice. Save for the too occasional and often spotty rare film release, proprietary rights to the Republic’s vast back catalog from that studio’s “Golden Age” have mostly languished in the vaults. Then, with little fanfare, Paramount Pictures, Inc. - the company who had obtained the rights through a dizzying history of corporate takeovers and mergers - began to quietly make some of these moribund but treasured troves of rare films digitally available to fans in late 2015. Though streaming through the Youtube channel via the company’s Paramount Vault portal was not the platform that many of us had hoped for, it was a welcome turn of events and certainly better than nothing.

The late Jay Thomas is going to be remembered for a great many things. Children of the 1980s will always see him as Carla's husband Eddie LeBec husband on Cheers. People that came of age just a bit later will remember him as kindly gym teacher Bill Meister in Mr. Holland's Opus, while millennials will always associate him with the Easter Bunny from The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3. He was also a disc jockey in the 1970s and a SiriusXM host over the past decade.

Blaxploitation made its move on the horror market with Aip’s Blacula (1972); so successful was the foray that the money wheels started turning towards a follow up. And while Aip was busy cooking up a sequel to their surprise hit, an outsider saw an opening in the window of the American Dream and leapt right through. Frank Saletri may have been a lawyer by trade, but his heart belonged to horror and he gave his all to write and produce Blackenstein (1973) – a movie somewhat better than its godawful reputation, restored for posterity on Blu-ray by the fine folks at Severin Films. Come for the monster; stay to hear Saletri’s story.

There was a time when it was generally perceived that iconic heroic fantasy characters such as The Lone Ranger, The Green Hornet, The Shadow and Buck Rogers were so popular for so long that they would be around forever. I think of that whenever somebody alleges Superman and Spider-Man will be around forever. Times change, as do our cultural predilections and venues.
Nonetheless, those heroes have become part of our cultural fabric. Most Americans (at least) who have neither read, seen, nor heard the adventures of these characters have heard their names and have some vague idea of their modus operandi. Just as DC Entertainment has kept Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman “alive” through their comic books while merchandisers and movie producers such as Michael Uslan could enhance their visibility through their more profitable endeavors.

If there is a reliable truism that can coexist alongside the American film industry’s dance of death with economically insane budgets that now routinely soar north of $200 million, it is that (most) critics and potential ticket-buyers can be counted on to review bad buzz and publicized woes of dollars and production instead of the actual movie once it finally finds its way to a screen. And it may in fact be true that the drama behind the scenes often outstrips the quality of the wide-screen finished product, though certainly this is not always the case. The reception of big-budget box-office flops like John Carter, The Lone Ranger, Jupiter Ascending and Oliver Stone’s Alexander are but some late examples of our number-crunching obsession with pop culture minutiae and the fascination of a behemoth’s preordained fall. Most who trudged out to see any of these films during their theatrical...

The answer to the legal question posed in The Lone Ranger v 2 # 22 is: I don’t know, either.
There, that was short and sweet. I answered the question, so we can all move on to other things. Me, I’ve got Baseball playoff games to watch. And you…
And you, you’re not satisfied.
Okay, guess it’s time to make a short story long.
The Lone Ranger v 2 # 22 “Rainmaker.” It started in 1870 in a “rural town at the edge of what would become the Oklahoma Territory.” Actually, it started quite a bit earlier. It started whenever the drought started; however many weeks, months, or years that was. The drought which turned the earth dry, killing the crops and the cattle of this rural town alike.
It started because the good people of this rural town were so desperate for the saving rain that they paid an elderly Indian woman...

The girl on fire is still burning bright! Lionsgate’s hotly anticipated sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire trounced the competition over its first weekend at the box office, pulling in an estimated $161.1 million. That gross handily beats the $152.5 million opening of The Hunger Games, which opened in March 2012, and it stands as the best November debut of all time ahead of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which bowed with $142.9 million in 2009.

The world's entertainment capital is losing out as studios switch big TV and film productions to other locations to save money, leaving studios as little more than grand tourist attractions
Among the tourist hordes on the "walk of fame" last week, you could feel Hollywood casting its spell. They genuflected at the names of actors and film-makers embedded in pink stars in the pavement. Gloria Swanson. John Wayne. Will Smith. Francis Ford Coppola. Quentin Tarantino. Generations of glamour and talent, ringed in brass and close enough to touch.
Open-air vans and double-decker buses packed with camera-toting passengers swayed past palm trees and the Chinese Theatre en route to celebrity home tours – which are in truth celebrity hedge tours, because you seldom glimpse the mansions behind the shrubbery. No matter, the tours are extremely popular: there are now about 40 operators, up from just a handful a few years ago.

I'm featuring it here for two reasons; 1.) because it's very well done and 2.) I think it highlights the issues I have with today's blockbuster cinema. The first point is self-explanatory, but to the second point just watching this reminds me of every problem I have with so many of today's big budget spectacle features from the fact they are more style and size over substance and, like the video, overstay their welcome. (Rns) Producers of the latest reboot of the “Superman” franchise famously marketed the movie to Christian audiences. Makers of the new “Lone Ranger” movie, not so much.
There’s a reason for that. If “Man of Steel” panders to Christians, in “The Lone Ranger,” Christians are portrayed as unattractive, ineffectual, hateful or flat-out hypocritically evil.
Like so much in this mess of a movie, it’s an ingredient that doesn’t make a ton of sense.
(Spoiler alert: I’m not going to give away much, but if you’re the type who wants to know nothing about a movie, come on back after you see it.)
Clocking in at two-and-a-half hours, “The Lone Ranger” can’t decide if it’s an homage to the graphically bloody Westerns of Sam Peckinpah or the slapstick of Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles.”

The latest big screen version of The Lone Ranger has descended upon the movie going public in the year 2013 A.D (or B.C.E). Regardless of what abbreviation you assign to the year, it’s the 21st Century. The Lone Ranger was a television serial in the late 1940′s and early 1950′s that spawned two films during that time frame. The series and films starred Clayton Moore as the iconic masked lawman and Jay Silverheels as his riding buddy and ally Tonto. Together on their trusted steeds Silver and Scout respectively, they righted wrongs and brought the guilty to justice in the American Old West. Jay Silverheels was of Native American ancestry. In the new version, the...

It.s hard to take too seriously a film that is entirely tongue-in-cheek other than to say that it is entertaining and depth free. It is based on a TV show after all, from a century ago that entranced people mostly older than the filmmakers. It has earned an iconic status. Who can.t sing the theme music . The stirring William Tell Overture . and who doesn.t know that Tonto, his sidekick, was a cool cat? L.R..s war whoop was .Hi Ho, Silver! And away!.. Nuff said. It will tickle folks despite a few wrinkles. The Lone Ranger and Tonto have a cute meet worthy of filmdom.s cutest romcom couples. They should never have hooked up on paper. The...

Lying, cheating, deceitful pig! Anytime that sentence is uttered you know there’s some drama. We will get to the slick used car salesman that is Brian in just a bit, but first let me say I’m glad this season has officially begun. As of this week, the gloves came off and it is on.
The week began with the group dodgeball date. The day started off innocently enough in a small private little gym where the guys got absolutely pummeled with balls from professional dodge ballers. (Who knew there was such a thing?) Let me tell you, I...

New television spots have been released for three movies that will duke it out in theaters this summer for some of that sweet box office gold: Pacific Rim, R.I.P.D. and The Lone Ranger. Each film has the potential to be a big hit but there's also a risk that each film could be a huge bomb. Let's take a look at Pacific Rim. The mechs vs giant monster movie from director Guillermo Del Toro probably has the best chance out of these three films of making some serious bucks at...

Flagstaff, Ariz. — The Hollywood image of Tonto once had the Lone Ranger's sidekick wearing a thin headband and lots of dangling fringes. The latest Disney version has a shirtless Johnny Depp adorned with feathers, a face painted white with black stripes, and a stuffed crow on his head.
The character in the upcoming "The Lone Ranger" still speaks broken English and chants prayers. But Depp has said he's less subservient, honors the proud American Indian warrior and displays a dry sense of humor seen throughout Indian Country. The production even hired a Comanche adviser, making it decidedly a Comanche story, and received the blessing of other tribes through ceremonies during filming.
Yet Disney has caught flak for what some say is the perpetuation of stereotypes through a character that lacks any real cultural traits. Moviegoers will have to wait until July 3 to see how all this plays out on screen.

We’ve seen plenty of awesome Lego movie sets over the years, ranging from the likes of Iron Man 3 to The Hobbit, and the upcoming The Lone Ranger. And now it’s Hasbro’s turn once more to take on a big movie franchise, partnering up with Paramount and J.J. Abrams in tandem with the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness.
The Star Trek Kre-o line marks the fourth in the series, following on from Transformers, Battleship, and G.I. Joe, the last of which landed earlier this year. And with Star Trek Into Darkness’ release just two days away on our shores, Yahoo Movies have debuted a great new J.J. Abrams-produced stop motion short featuring toys from the new Kre-o sets.
The Kre-o sets recreate the ships, locations, and characters of the upcoming movie. There’s the U.S.S. Enterprise, of course, that opens up to reveal the bridge.

The new trailer for "White House Down" includes much of the same terrifying imagery presented in the film's first teaser -- the U.S. Capitol exploding from the inside out, for instance -- but with one key addition: jokes. The latest look at Roland Emmerich's upcoming summer blockbuster shines a spotlight on the interaction between stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.
"It has a lot of humor, a lot of great characters, and -- at the center -- this relationship between an ex-soldier who wants to become a Secret Service agent (Tatum) but gets denied, and the President of the United States (Foxx)," Emmerich told HuffPost Entertainment when the first "White House Down" trailer debuted in March.
That relationship -- which, in this new trailer, includes elements of "Lethal Weapon" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" -- puts "White House Down" on the same level as a host of other 2013 summer blockbusters.

Sneak Peek a new international trailer with more revealing footage from director Gore Verbinski's new take on "The Lone Ranger".
The new film stars Johnny Depp as Native American 'Tonto' and Armie Hammer as Texas lawman 'John Reid'.
"The Lone Ranger" wrapped in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Shiprock and other locations in New Mexico, August 2012.
"The Lone Ranger", was originally a radio show created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker.
The premise of a vigilante, masked 'Texas Ranger', his horse 'Silver' and 'Indian' companion 'Tonto', was then adapted for pulp magazines and a popular TV series.
Episodes usually ended with a character lamenting the fact they never found out the hero's name ("Who was that masked man?"), only to be told, "Why, that was the Lone Ranger!"
Theme music used for both the radio and TV series was the "cavalry charge" finale of composer Gioacchino Rossini...

While most of the footage shown, from films like Elysium, Carrie, White House Down, After Earth, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Grown Ups 2 and Smurfs 2, has already been released online or shown in some capacity to the press, there was still plenty of new stuff to get excited for, as detailed below! It.s a four hour drive to get from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada, a trip that.s composed entirely of long stretches of highway that extend through the deserts of the south west. And once again we have braved the heat and the sand paving the way to this year.s CinemaCon. At the annual event, which formerly was known as ShoWest, all of the major studios hold big presentations to show off footage and make announcements about all of the biggest movies that are set to hit theaters in the coming months. This year is set to be a great one, with titles like Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel, The Lone Ranger, Elysium, The Heat, and possibly even The Hunger Games: Catching Fire set to show off the goods in The Colosseum at Caesar.s Palace. But before we get to that. After arriving...

Deadline reports that David Yates' planned reboot of the Tarzan franchise has run into trouble as Warner Bros. has today made the decision to halt production. The reimagining of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs tale had Alexander Skarsgard attached to play the title role, while Jessica Chastain was said to be in talks to play Jane. It sounds as if the reason for this is due to budgetary concerns, a problem which also plagued The Lone Ranger during its early stages. Whether this project can be saved or if it will go the same way as Akira and Paradise Lost remains to be seen. The site adds that the studio were courting Jamie Foxx to play the third lead, but no deal was put in place. Warner Bros. are hoping to try again next year, but had never actually green lit the film.

While a new full length trailer for The Lone Ranger is slated to debut on April 17th next week, the first TV spot has some new footage to show off. This one is certainly action-packed, with plenty of bits we haven't seen before. Helena Bonham Carter gets some more screentime along with a specially equipped boot that could prove to be deadly in the pub. But the real star this time seems to be Armie Hammer as the titular hero as he rides his trusty steed Silver along the top of a train as it barrels into a tunnel. It feels like we've been waiting forever for this flick to come out, and now I just want to if it's good or not. Watch below! Here's the first TV spot for Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger from YouTube: "There come a time, Kimosabe... When good men must wear mask.

The first line (and sometimes last) of marketing for any movie is the movie poster. It's typically the first look we get at upcoming movies and studios continue to push them out as the film gets closer to release. All too often, the studios like to release them all at the same time, leaving our inboxes flooded! Rather than shoot them to you in a bunch of little articles, I've grouped all the latest ones together into one convenient spot for you. Today sees new posters for Star Trek Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby, Lone Ranger, and more!

If you've been reading the site for awhile then you know I'm a sucker for westerns. I love the genre! Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn't make many of them these days because they aren't significant money makers. Disney is taking a big gamble with The Lone Ranger, and I hope it pays off for them. While we wait for that mega budget movie to come out, we have a good looking indie western that's been made called Dead Man's Burden. The movie comes from Kelly Reichardt (Meek’s Cutoff) and it looks like it could be worth checking out. Here's the synopsis...

How did the lone cowboy hero become such a potent figure in American culture? In an extract from his final book Fractured Times, the late Eric Hobsbawm follows a trail from cheap novels and B-westerns to Ronald Reagan
Today, populations of wild horse-riders and herdsmen exist in a large number of regions all round the world. Some of them are strictly analogous to cowboys, such as gauchos on the plains of the southern cone of Latin America; the llaneros on the plains of Colombia and Venezuela; possibly the vaqueiros of the Brazilian north-east; certainly the Mexican vaqueros from whom indeed, as everyone knows, both the costume of the modern cowboy myth and most of the vocabulary of the cowboy's trade are directly derived: mustang, lasso, lariat, sombrero, chaps (chaparro), a cinch, bronco.
