In April 2015, The Hollywood Reporter noted that Warner Bros. was preparing to "flood the market" that summer with a slate of nine films designed to fill the gap left by the absence of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy and the "Harry Potter" films. At the time, Warner's domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman told the outlet, "It will be tough work, but I think it will pay off."
In some ways, WB's approach did pay off. The Dwayne Johnson-led "San Andreas," produced on a budget of $110 million, raked in $474 million worldwide. And while "Mad Max: Fury Road" didn't fare quite as well, making $380 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, it did at least garner critical acclaim and remains one of the best movies in the "Mad Max" saga. But one big-budget Warner project failed spectacularly on both a critical and commercial front.

Now that Kraven the Hunter has ended its disastrous theatrical run, the Marvel film is getting its second wind during its streaming debut. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character, it earned a total gross of $24 million domestically and $60 million globally against a speculated budget of $110 to $130 million.
Recently, however, Kraven the Hunter's official X account revealed that the movie had topped the charts on Apple TV:

Newly released concept art showcases a scrapped sequence from Kraven the Hunter that would have tied in with the Venom trilogy. Initially, Kraven the Hunter was set to debut before Venom: The Last Dance, which may have partially contributed to the scene being removed from the final cut of the film.

There have been many great Marvel and DC movies over the years, but it is true that some films missed the mark, though even a few of those who did not succeed still featured exciting fight scenes. Marvel and DC have a bright future ahead. The McU's upcoming movies include a pair of Avengers films, Spider-Man 4, and more. As for DC, James Gunn's DC Universe has films like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and more on the way.
However, both franchises — and others — have produced a number of projects that did not work quite as expected. From the Spider-Man franchise to the old Dceu to more, both Marvel and DC have had their fair share of films that struggled at the box office or with critics. Thankfully, some of them had redeeming qualities, even if they were not among the best Marvel movies or the most exciting DC films,...

Kraven the Hunter was positioned as a darker, grittier entry in Sony’s knockoff Spider-Man Universe, exploring the origin story of one of Spider-Man’s most fearsome foes. Unfortunately, the film fails to deliver on nearly every front, leaving me somewhat disappointed and questioning the purpose of its very existence. Here, I am going to gleefully breakdown some of the film’s shortcomings.
A Script That Hunts Itself
The screenplay is the heart of any film, and Kraven the Hunter suffers from a muddled and uninspired script. Instead of crafting a compelling origin story, the narrative feels like a collection of generic tropes borrowed from better films. It awkwardly attempts (and fails) to balance Kraven’s tragic backstory with some not exactly subtle environmental themes,...

A beefed-up Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in this superhero action thriller, the sixth and reportedly final entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), following Morbius, Madame Web and the three Venom movies. As such, it’s not without its moments, but the action is largely generic and the exact nature of Kraven’s anti-hero status muddies the water a little bit.
Directed by J.C. Chandor, Kraven the Hunter starts well, with Kraven (Taylor-Johnson) infiltrating a Russian prison and then violently murdering a notorious gang boss by stabbing him in the neck with a sharp tooth from his own sabre tooth tiger rug. One swift prison break later – with Kraven displaying heightened abilities, including some familiar wall-crawling – and we’re off into flashback territory,...

Now that Kraven the Hunter has hit theaters, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has addressed the possibility of reappearing in a future crossover movie within Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Kraven the Hunter is one of the foremost figures in Spider-Man's iconic rogues' gallery and the latest to be given a live-action origin story by Sony in Kraven the Hunter. Sony's Spider-Man movies are ostensibly interconnected, teasing the notion that Venom, Morbius, Madame Web and Kraven will at some point band together and finally star opposite the web-slinger himself.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson remains hopeful that this is a possibility, stating in an interview with CinePOP that he would love to star alongside other villains in a Sinister Six adaption. This team-up was first teased in the Morbius post-credits scene as the McU's Adrian Toomes/Vulture approaches Morbius and suggests a team-up. Taylor-Johnson also reiterates his long-held desire to adapt the "Kraven's Last Hunt" comic, which...

Kraven the Hunter bursts into theaters as the next installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, before the movie makes its way to digital and streaming releases. Kraven the Hunter depicts an origin story for the eponymous Spider-Man foe, brought to life by MCU alumni, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The movie boasts the villain’s live-action debut, and the pressure is certainly on. Following the disappointing performances of Morbius and Madame Web, much of the Ssu’s future hinges on Kraven the Hunter’s box office performance.
The Ssu’s Kraven the Hunter follows Sergei Kravinoff, whose complicated relationship with his father compels him into becoming the greatest and most feared hunter the world has ever seen. While the character is known in the comics as a big game hunter, Taylor-Johnson has specified that this rendition of the character is not a poacher, but rather an apex predator on a mission to protect...

After Sony’s recent Marvel misfires on 2022’s Morbius and this year’s Madame Web, I wasn’t holding out too much hope for yet another Marvel villain origin story when I headed to the press screening of Kraven the Hunter. Its shuffling around the release schedule didn’t give me much hope, and word spread from someone at a rival studio that the exhibitor screening didn’t go well, also dampening my hopes.
But I always try to go into a movie with an open mind, and in this case, although Kraven is a well-known villain in the comic book world and has popped up here and there, a starring movie wasn’t top of my list.
That said, I had a surprisingly good time with this ultraviolent R-rated telling of how a Russian kid, Sergei Kravinoff, grows up to become a fearsome hunter — not of animals, who he spiritually embraces,...

There is a scene in J.C. Chandor's slovenly superhero thriller "Kraven the Hunter" wherein the ab-tastic title character (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) explains his superhero name to the casually overwhelmed Calypso (Ariana DeBose). His real name is Sergei Kravinoff, but he has become such a notorious assassin among the Russian mob that he has earned the mythical nickname of "The Hunter." He also explains that one can indeed call him Sergei, but that he prefers Kraven. "With a K," he says. It's one of the douchiest things any superhero or supervillain has said in a mainstream blockbuster, including the two that starred Jared Leto.
But then, Taylor-Johnson somehow gets away with it. The actor infuses the absurd character of Kraven with such a brash confidence, that we kind of forgive his off-putting arrogance. As we see throughout the film, Kraven is so capable a killer, and dispatches bad guys with such aplomb,...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn't new to superhero movies, having played the McU's Quicksilver in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Kraven the Hunter is his first opportunity to lead one, and while he turns in an entertaining performance, the latest installment of Sony's Spider-Man Universe never lives up to its potential. Previously, the movies in Sony's Spider-Man Universe have been a mixed bag. While Tom Hardy's Venom films have been generally well-received and done solidly at the box office, Jared Leto's Morbius and Dakota Johnson's Madame Web bombed in every way a movie possibly can.
For Kraven the Hunter, director J.C. Chandor took some big swings. The movie is violent enough to earn an R rating, which already puts it at odds with typical superhero fare. Most movies might earn a PG-13 rating for sci-fi violence, but ultimately they remain relatively family-friendly. Kraven the Hunter, however, features...

A PSA for folks who don’t have 60-plus years of Spider-Man comic-book history at their immediate beck and call: Kraven the Hunter was one of the webslinger’s earliest supervillains, having made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #15. Created by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, he’s a big-game hunter with a strong claim to being the greatest in the world; the bragging rights of bagging Spider-Man as a trophy, which would have secured him the title, was what fueled his quest to kill the superhero. Kraven...

There’s an amusing moment midway through the punishingly dull Kraven the Hunter, in which Ariana DeBose — playing a high-powered lawyer linked to a pileup of gangster killings, who flees a team of hitmen in her London office and lands in Siberia — says with a straight face, “I don’t like the feel of this at all.” No kidding. The scene probably wasn’t intended for laughs, but it nonetheless makes you wish director J.C. Chandor and the writers had committed to the silliness of this muddled Marvel villain origin story with a touch more winking humor.

For the comic-book-illiterate, Kraven The Hunter, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964, is a Spider-Man antagonist and co-founder of the supervillain gang the Sinister Six (rumour has it they were known as the Foreboding Five before Vulture joined). J.C. Chandor’s mostly flat and ludicrous origin story reimagines him as a vigilante Doctor Dolittle, an apex predator who can not only commune with animals but also takes on some of their abilities, such as increased smell, vision and strength. Surprisingly, this is perhaps the part of Kraven The Hunter that makes the most sense.
The backstory is leadenly sketched. A Marvel star has been cast, along with six other actors, in the upcoming movie adaptation of Shiver, a young adult fantasy romance novel that has drawn comparisons to Twilight. The paranormal romance in the Twilight book series written by Stephanie Meyer became a popular culture phenomenon, which led to movie adaptations starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The series' fantastical world and the love triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black continues to resonate years later.

Due to many speculated reasons, the film almost suffered the same fate as Marvel’s planned solo Gambit movie. But thankfully, Sony Pictures finally confirmed the film’s release date to be December 13, 2024.

While Deadpool & Wolverine is the only MCU movie that will be hitting theaters this year, Sony’s Spider-verse still has two of its villain-ccentric films dropping this year with Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven The Hunter. These films will be released after another Spider-verse movie, Madame Web, made its impression earlier this year. It’s time to hit the game trail as Sony has now released the trailer for Kraven The Hunter.
The film opens December 13 after a couple of delays, in which producer Matt Tolmach explains, “Kraven moved to Christmas because we’re excited about it and Christmas is the best release period there is, when you get people with time to go back to the movies over and over again,” Tolmach said. “That was a real reflection of how the studio felt about the movie. Hey, True Believers, remember Kraven the Hunter? I’ll give you a minute to refresh your memory. Are you good? Cool. After dropping off the radar for several months following the debut of a gnarly (and somewhat promising) red-band trailer, Sony delayed Kraven the Hunter until the Christmas box office window. Why? According to producer Matt Tolmach, “Kraven moved to Christmas because we’re excited about it, and Christmas is the best release period there is – when you get people with time to go back to the movies over and over again.” What’s in store for Sony’s next Marvel film? Lots of mature themes, it would seem. Kraven the Hunter is officially rated R for strong bloody violence and language. Let the games begin!

"What was it all for...?" Well Go USA has revealed a new trailer for another intense war movie titled Before Dawn, an Australian production made by Australian filmmaker Jordon Prince-Wright. Not to be confused with Werner Herzog's classic Rescue Dawn (the story of Dieter Dengler). After first opening Down Under in April, this hits VOD in the US in July. Before Dawn is the journey of fictional Western Australia outback kid Jim Collins and his battalion on the Western Front during World War I. He joins up eager to fight, only to discover the brutal realities of trench warfare. Of course. Starring Levi Miller (from A Wrinkle in Time) as Jim, with Travis Jeffery, Myles Pollard, Tim Franklin, Jordan Dulieu, introducing Peter Sullivan, with Ed Oxenbould & Stephen Peacocke. How many of these "war is hell" movies do they need to make? This is really All Quiet on the Western Front or 1917 all over again,...

Casting slightly older actors as the Pevensie children in the Chronicles of Narnia reboot is crucial for handling complex conflicts believably. Actors like Elliot Grihault, Florence Hunt, and Lexi Rabe fit well as Peter, Susan, and Lucy, respectively. Actors like Walker Scobell, Roman Griffin Davis, or Iain Armitage for Edmund and Eustace would showcase initially unlikable yet charming personalities.
Casting the children of the Pevensie family well will be one of the most important tasks for Greta Gerwig and her team to accomplish with the reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia. Following the cultural phenomenon of Barbie, the acclaimed director was contracted to write and direct the first two movies in Netflix's reboot of C.S. Lewis' classic fantasy series. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe had a good idea at the start: bring together key characters from the Spiderverse. But they forgot something important: Spider-Man himself. Despite a few movies already, the universe hasn’t been received well, except for the ‘Venom’ series, which is ending this October.
The latest disappointment was ‘Madame Web.’ This December, we’re getting a movie about one of Spider-Man’s top villains, Kraven the Hunter. Let’s see what we know about it.
The movie will be rated “R”
We don’t have much info on the movie’s plot, but the villain was supposed to be in it earlier. Execs held off because his stories are pretty intense for older viewers. The movie will likely be rated “R,” but we’re still unsure which story it’ll use. In August 2018, Richard Wenk was hired to write the script, following his success with ‘The Equalizer 2.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe started with the best intentions, it was supposed to gather the most important supporting characters from the Spiderverse, but they forgot one important thing, Spider-Man himself.

Kraven the Hunter's release date has been delayed by Sony Pictures from August 30 to December 13. The movie will now come out after Venom: The Last Dance, pushing it nearly four months later. The release date delay comes amid various shuffles in Sony's calendar, including the next Karate Kid movie.
Despite initially set to lead the charge for Sony's Spider-Man Universe in the summer, Kraven the Hunter's release date has been delayed. The next installment in the Ssu will explore the origin story of its titular Spider-Man villain as he discovers his ability to communicate with animals and uses it to hunt down his criminal father after being left for dead during a hunt. Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads the Kraven the Hunter cast alongside Russell Crowe, Ariana Debose, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbott, Alessandro Nivola and Levi Miller.

A central performance from Levi Miller isn’t enough to lift a run-of-the-mill war film that struggles to maintain dramatic interest
Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email
Watching Before Dawn, it is quickly obvious that this first world war drama didn’t have a budget big enough to stage blockbuster scale battlefield recreations – instead, there’s plenty of scenes following characters inside trenches, the camera poised below ground level. Director Jordan Prince-Wright exploits the restricted spatiality of these settings, often keeping shots tight and human-oriented, with scant locational details. The cover of night also helps. It reportedly cost $900,000 in earthworks to dig the trenches, transforming farmland in Esperance, Western Australia, into environments that can plausibly – at a push – resemble terrain in war-torn Europe.
The marketing materials for Before Dawn do a good job impersonating a bells-and-whistles production but the film itself is another matter: there were times, particularly early on,...

Serious movie directors have found success in making children's movies, such as Joe Wright with "Pan" and Wes Anderson with "Fantastic Mr. Fox." These directors often bring their own unique style and storytelling techniques to kids' movies, like Anderson's symmetry and blend of storytelling and visual aesthetics.
While there are many directors whose work is mostly aimed at a young audience, there are some serious movie directors who have made great kids’ movies. The field of children’s movies is a broad but tricky one, as while it gives a lot of creative opportunities for filmmakers, making a successful kids' movie isn’t an easy task. Various filmmakers have dedicated their entire careers to mostly making family-friendly content aimed at children, such as Hayao Miyazaki and Brad Bird, while there are others who have paid a visit to this area without making it the focus of their careers.

Movies like Better Watch Out, The Descent, and Sorry To Bother You surprise viewers by abandoning their original premise midway through the story. While TV shows often adapt and change as they continue, it is unusual for movies to drop their main idea. Examples, such as Miracle Mile and From Dusk till Dawn, demonstrate how these plot changes can lead to terrifying and memorable experiences for the audience.

The hunt is officially on, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson is going on a wild rampage in the latest trailer for Kraven the Hunter.
The footage, released Monday, shows a glimpse at how Taylor-Johnson’s Sergei Kravinoff became the Kraven. While on a safari to hunt lions with his father (Russell Crowe), a crime lord and hunter, Sergei is attacked by a lion after failing to shoot it. Having been seen as weak in his father’s eyes, he’s left for dead, but everything changes when the lion’s bite seems to give him superpowers.
“I stared death in the face, and for the first time, I saw my true self,” Taylor-Johnson’s Spider-Man villain can be heard saying in the trailer for the upcoming Sony film.
As Sergei grows up, he begins his personal hunt for the bad guys, viciously going after each one. At one point he says, “My...

There have been dozens of Peter Pan movies since the birth of cinema, from live-action stage adaptations to animated classics, and the Peter Pan movies exemplify why J. M. Barrie's story continues to entertain and delight so long after it was first written. The Scottish author's most famous work tells the story of a sprite-like young boy named Peter Pan who lives in the fantastical realm of Neverland and refuses to grow up. Peter Pan's enchanting story has captured the imaginations of other artists for generations, and there are now dozens of Peter Pan films. Regardless of how true the adaptation is to the source material, nearly every Peter Pan movie has a bit of the magic that Barrie sprinkled throughout his works.
