Toys ‘R’ Us, the once-ubiquitous toy store brand that shuttered all locations when it went bankrupt in 2017 only to be revived in Macy’s store locations in 2022, premiered the 66-second spot at Cannes Lions, the annual gathering of the ad world’s elite on the French Riviera. The ad utilizes Sora, the yet-to-be-released artificial intelligence tool from OpenAI, to which the brand’s creative partner, Native Foreign, had early access.
“Charles Lazarus was a visionary ahead of his time and we wanted to honor his legacy with a spot using the most cutting-edge technology available,” said Kim Miller Olko, the company’s global chief marketing officer and president of Toys ‘R’ Us Studios.

Palpatine somehow returns, again, in hilarious Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker meme that pokes fun at the Emperor’s resurrection. The Rise of Skywalker was arguably the most flawed of the Star Wars prequels, especially because key plot points were rushed or not explained at all. That includes Emperor Palpatine’s return, which was explained in the film by Poe Dameron’s infamous “Somehow, Palpatine returned" line.
After a Twitter user shared a fun story about accidentally finding their Palpatine action figure from 35 years ago buried in the front yard, writer Mike Drucker (@MikeDrucker) quoted the tweet with the most perfect reaction image.

Chris Licht officially exited his position of CEO at CNN on Wednesday morning and, for many online, it was no big surprise. A fairly large swath of folks on Twitter actually dubbed it “karma” for Licht’s firing of CNN anchor Don Lemon.
Licht’s one-year tenure as CEO and Chairman of CNN Worldwide was turbulent from start to finish, with a disastrous Donald Trump town hall and an unflattering profile in The Atlantic finally breaking staff morale. Upon learning that Licht’s exit is effective immediately, Twitter users suspected that Lemon might be off somewhere celebrating the ouster of the man who ousted him in April.
“Somewhere Don Lemon is laughing his ass off about Chris Licht,” one person wrote. “Karma does work.”

The comedy world and Law & Order: Svu veterans both turned to social media Sunday to pay tribute to Richard Belzer, the legendary comedian-turned-beloved television detective who starred as John Munch for over 20 years.
Marisky Hargitay wrote on Instagram, “Goodbye my dear, dear friend. I will miss you, your unique light, and your singular take on this strange world. The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

“Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” has been canceled at TBS after seven seasons.
“After 7 seasons, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee will not be returning to TBS this fall,” the show’s official Twitter account wrote. “We’re so thankful for our loyal audience, our amazing team, and that we got to annoy the right people every week—that there wasn’t wrestling or baseball or a very special episode of Big Bang.”
The weekly late-night series is the latest to be cut from the Warner Bros. Discovery slate, after shows “Chad” and “The Big D,” the latter of which was axed ahead of its premiere. News of these cancellations comes after WarnerMedia and Discovery completed their merger in April, which resulted in sweeping changes at the companies, including numerous executive staff exits.

TNT and TBS have set winter premiere dates for three of their top series.
The third-season bow of TNT’s Snowpiercer is set for Monday, January 24. TNT’s late-nighter Full Frontal with Samantha Bee returns for Season 7 on Thursday, January 20, with Season 17 of its Seth McFarlane toon American Dad! set for Thursday, January 24.
Snowpiercer‘s second season ended with Layton (Daveed Diggs) and Ruth (Alison Wright), who were banished to Big Alice’s compost car, plotting to take back Snowpiercer. With the help of Javier (Roberto Urbina) and Alexandra (Rowan Blanchard), Layton and Ruth made it back to the train and rallied with their supporters. Josie (Katie McGuiness) destroyed the Aquarium car, separating Snowpiercer’s head from the remaining 1,023 cars. Season 3 picks up with Layton and his inner circle commanding a small 10-car “pirate train” in search of Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) and a possible warm location to restart civilization. TBS announced that “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has been renewed for a seventh season. The network also renewed its first look deal with Bee’s production company Swimsuit Competition, which aims to develop original content while discovering new talent.
Bee’s late night talk show will move from its current Wednesday slot to Thursday nights in Jan. 2022, and production for Season 7 will also begin early next year. “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” spotlights Bee as a political satirist who discusses issues such as sexual assault in the media, climate change and child marriage in the U.S. The show also implements charitable initiatives such as last year’s #MailedIt campaign to support the United States Postal Service, and has reported segments from all over the world, including Rwanda, Jordan, Germany and other countries.

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Ed Asner on Sunday, reflecting on a career that not only left a mark in television and animation but also in the history of Hollywood labor.
In his illustrious career, Asner won seven Emmys, five of them for his iconic performance as Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and the spinoff “Lou Grant.” For younger fans, he was known for playing the voices of Hudson on the Disney cult classic “Gargoyles” and Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar Oscar winner “Up,” as well as Santa Claus in the Will Ferrell comedy “Elf” and other Christmas movies and specials.
But along with this, Asner served as president of the Screen Actors Guild during its pivotal strike in 1980, which led to a dramatic 32% increase in minimum salaries. His outspoken activism as a democratic socialist led to clashes with right-wing actors in Hollywood, including Charlton Heston,...

In a surprising addition to the superhero discourse this week, fans have been taking to Twitter and other social media platforms in an effort to offer their two cents when it comes (or not) to whether Batman and other heroes perform cunnilingus.
How did this happen? Well, it all started with a fairly straightforward interview about how successful TV series like WandaVision, The Umbrella Academy, and Harley Quinn subvert the superhero genre – one that happened to produce an irresistible nugget of DC info that the internet is still very much feasting on at the time of writing.
Obviously it’s an interviewer’s dream when the person you’re quizzing dishes up some behind the scenes secrets about the making of their art, but Harley Quinn co-creator Justin Halpern probably wasn’t expecting the widespread social media reaction to this new interview,...

One of the many surprise announcements that Disney made at the company’s Investor Day event this week was Lightyear, an upcoming Pixar movie that acts as an intriguing spinoff of the Toy Story franchise. Instead of following the action figure we all know and love, it’ll star the actual Buzz Lightyear, as in the original Space Ranger that the toy’s based on and will explore his cosmic origin story.
The news came with a first look image from the movie, which reveals Buzz’s redesign for the film. And that’s not the only thing that’s changing about the character, as Tim Allen won’t be returning for the project, with Avengers star Chris Evans instead taking over as the voice of the hero of Star Command.

On Friday the White House confirmed that Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, has tested positive for coronavirus. He’s one of several prominent Republicans — including Florida Senator Rick Scott, and Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy, who confirmed they have been exposed to Covid-19 just today alone.
And of course he’s one of dozens of people in Donald Trump’s immediate orbit who have contracted the virus in the last several months, including Donald Trump himself, and Herman Cain, who died from it in July. This comes after months of efforts by the president and his associates to downplay the illness and turn efforts to prevent people dying of it into a political wedge issue.
In what is probably not a shock, once the news was public, people on social media definitely chose not to remain politely silent about their feelings regarding Don Jr.’s condition. Instead,...

Life comes at you fast. “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” was a huge disappointment among film critics, but the negative critical reception to the movie is nothing compared to the reaction greeting “Star Wars” in the wake of the film’s novelization. The upcoming “Rise of Skywalker” novel from writer Rae Carson will be available to own starting March 17, but copies of the book showed up at Chicago’s C2E2 convention last week. The novel includes controversial new information that answers questions left by J.J. Abrams’ “Rise of Skywalker” theatrical cut. The book has made headlines this week for revealing how Palpatine returned (he transferred his consciousness into a clone of himself) and confirming Rey and Kylo’s climactic kiss was not romantic. A new report from ScreenRant might contain the book’s most jaw-dropping and head-scratching revelation: Rey’s father was a failed clone of Palpatine.

Many late-night hosts have regular segments they can turn to again and again to get laughs. Seth Meyers has “A Closer Look.” Jimmy Kimmel has “Mean Tweets.” Jimmy Fallon has his “Thank You Notes.” And James Corden has “Carpool Karaoke.”
On “Full Frontal,” one of TBS’ late-night entries, host Samantha Bee has none of those things. With a program that airs once a week, she doesn’t have the luxury of relying on regular concepts. “We expect to change things up for our personal interests,” says Bee in a recent interview. “I like to reinvent things as much as possible.”
Over the course of four seasons (the show’s fifth cycle just got underway), Bee has changed the set, the opening, and in recent weeks, some of her regular contributors and head writers. Earlier this month, “Full Frontal” elevated Mike Drucker and Kristen Bartlett to head writer titles, replacing Melinda Taub.

Disney released the first proper trailer for Guy Ritchie's live-action Aladdin remake last night. In it, we got to see Mena Massoud as Aladdin, witnessed the magnificent Agrabah and the Cave of Wonders, and caught a little glimpse of Jafar and Iago, too, along with Aladdin and Jasmine's first meeting.
Which was nice.
Then, there came the big reveal - Will Smith as the Genie. Previously, Smith had appeared in some glossy promotional photos for the forthcoming film looking, well, basically like himself, but dressed as a Genie. However, the actor had warned fans that in the actual film, he would indeed be blue, like Disney's animated version of the character, famously voiced by the late Robin Williams.
It's safe to say that no one was prepared for the sight that awaited them when Smith's Genie lurched up on screen. If you haven't seen it yet,...

While you have every right to stay skeptical about Detective Pikachu, it must be said that the film’s first trailer suggests that the franchise’s long-awaited jump to live-action cinema will prove to be a fair bit less awkward than many of us were anticipating, with the fluffy little investigator and his peers generally looking pretty well-rendered next to the human cast.
Is that a good enough reason to get excited about this upcoming Ryan Reynolds-led flick? Not necessarily, but it’s clear that this teaser is already winning over some naysayers. While there are certainly still Pokémon fans out there who aren’t on board with the project, the bulk of the online response to the trailer so far looks to be ranging from cautiously optimistic to “mega hyped.”

With so many renowned takes on Batman’s most famous villain, any actor stepping into the role of the Joker is going to burdened with some weighty expectations when it comes to both looking and acting the part. Fortunately, the first reactions to seeing Joaquin Phoenix in green hair and makeup have generally ranged from cautiously optimistic to thrilled.
When it was first announced that Heath Ledger would be playing the Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight, the doubters responded in droves, making it all too ironic that many still consider this version to be the high water mark for the character’s big screen portrayals. With that in mind, it was never a given that Phoenix’s portrayal for next year’s standalone movie wouldn’t be met with a wave of cynicism, making it a fairly encouraging sign that many Twitter users seem willing to give this star...

Refresh for updates Fittingly, the reactions so far to the death of writer Harlan Ellison came mainly from the community that he was immersed in for most of his career – the science-fiction writers, filmmakers, critics, punks, artists and comic creators that worshipped him as a literary idol.
The comments were honest, sometimes brutally so, but mostly funny, capturing the irascible Ellison as someone who loved provoking the world as he moved through it.
Here are some reactions so far:
Harlan Ellison: There was no one quite like him in American letters, and never will be. Angry, funny, eloquent, hugely talented. If there's an afterlife, Harlan is already kicking ass and taking down names.

Refresh for updates… Roseanne Barr’s noxious, racist tweet likening former Barack Obama aide Valerie Jarrett to a Planet of the Apes character has drawn quick condemnation from Hollywood, including from her ex-husband Tom Arnold, while former Fox News host Eric Bolling tweeted — then deleted — that the Roseanne star owed no apology.
Arnold, replying to a post by CNN’s Brian Stelter, called Barr’s tweets “dangerous” (see all tweets below), while MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough tweeted: “There is no apology she can make that justifies @ABC turning a blind eye to this bigotry by airing another second of her show. Even in the Age of Trump, there are red lines that can never be crossed. This is one.”
Tweeted Don Cheadle, “You can take @RoseanneOnABC out of racism, but you can’t take the racism out of @therealroseanne …”
“No apology necessary at all @therealroseanne. And please don’t leave.

On Tuesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg finally appeared before Congress to discuss the social media platform’s recent scandals. But while talk on Capitol Hill largely concerned the platform’s impact on recent elections, “fake news,” and the Cambridge Analytica data leak, online chit chat focused on more prosaic issues — like Zuckerberg’s anxious appearance, and general lack of tech knowledge by presiding legislators.

Bill Nye the Science Guy is about to educate and inform a lot more people the fun way again. Netflix is giving him a brand new talk show series set for Spring 2017. Bill Nye the Science Guy was a half-hour science program that aired on PBS and other networks from 1993-1998. It was a successor to things like Watch Mr. Wizard, Mr. Wizard's World, and Beakman's World. The show was great for a lot of reasons, the most important of course being that it got people engaged with learning science. The second, for me at least, was that it was hosted by a "geek" who was "cool." That might sound funny but as a kid who hid her geekiness, it was nice to see someone not just getting attention for theirs but paid for it. IndieWire reported this morning that the new series with Nye will be a talk show...

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

That’s right – if you add together all the Deadpool series (creatively), April’s Deadpool #45 marks Wade Wilson’s landmark 250th issue! How will he be celebrating? Death! No, really. Wade’s about to reach the end of the line, but he’s not gone yet.
