The streaming giant soon set about its business of taking the second season forward. Albert Kim stepped down from the capacity of showrunner, with Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani taking over the reins of the show. But that isn’t the only major alteration for Avatar Season 2.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.
In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.
The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”
Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.

The open casting call for Toph in Netflix’s second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender is making some lovely headlines in the tabloids. Additionally, they’re pioneering inclusivity by encouraging blind or low-vision actors for Toph’s role.
With Season 1 debuting to a torrent of excitement & securing a renewal for additional seasons, this live-action adaptation of the beloved 2005 Nickelodeon series continues to spark conversations—albeit with some trepidation from fans. Remember how Toph’s original character enthralled us with her wit, and, of course, her prodigious earthbending prowess at just 12 years old?

Now, the show’s vision of a “mid-late teen” Toph has spurred a sense of protectiveness amongst die-hard fans. Could this new portrayal of the sassy, confident, and unfiltered Toph—with dance or martial arts skills as a delightful bonus—reshape our perceptions & expectations of the iconic character?...

In the original show, Aang and Katara end up being together. However, fans have often wondered, if it was the plan to begin with, following the undertones in her and Zuko’s bond. Despite starting off on the wrong foot by living on opposite sides of the war, Katara did eventually start to see good in Zuko, but the original show never overtly inclined towards establishing a romantic bond.
But with the live-action series moving forward for two more seasons, the showrunner of the first season refused to indulge if the show will expand upon their bond.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s case, showrunner Albert Kim clarified that instead of translating the animated series to the small screen as it is, they’re aiming to be true to the show’s spirit.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

A world of vampires, werewolves and wizards is on its way to screens big and small.
Married writer-producers Eric Heisserer (“Shadow and Bone”) and Christine Boylan (“The Punisher”) and production company Hivemind have partnered with game publisher Paradox Interactive to develop the World of Darkness story universe for film and television.
Launched in 1991 with the tabletop roleplaying game “Vampire: The Masquerade,” the World of Darkness universe includes other properties like “Werewolf: The Apocalypse,” “Mage: The Ascension,” “Orpheus,” and “Hunter: The Reckoning,” and has expanded to video games, comic books, novels, virtual reality and card and board games. From the outset, the franchise has set itself apart in the world of science-fiction/fantasy by putting players inside the shoes — or claws, or wings — of a vast and interconnected coterie of monsters who live amongst humanity, and then forcing them to make complicated moral decisions about how to slake their character’s darkest urges.

Oscar-nominated Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, writer-producer Christine Boylan and Hivemind, which produces Netflix’s The Witcher, have teamed with Paradox Interactive to develop a film and TV franchise around the role-playing game World of Darkness.
The World of Darkness universe launched in 1991 with Vampire: The Masquerade. Today IPs under the brand include Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Orpheus and Hunter: The Reckoning which have spawned video games, virtual reality, card and board games, comic books, novels and original tabletop role-playing games. World of Darkness is known for its hybrid of horror, science fiction and fantasy where the protagonists are monsters in complex moral situations.
“The World of Darkness story universe is deliberately and unapologetically inclusive and diverse,” says Boylan. “It has always made a point of including equal gendered characters, protagonists and antagonists of every race, and representation of all creeds – bringing a female and diverse audience to gaming like nothing prior.

The American Film Institute has named 25 alumnae of the AFI Conservatory and AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women to participate in the next phase of the Fox Filmmakers Lab. A partnership between AFI and 20th Century Fox, the Lab aims to increase the number of women directing major studio films — which was even lower last year than it was in 2015 — by giving them the chance to direct short films based on Fox titles: “Alien,” “Die Hard,” “The Omen,” “The Fly,” etc.

Constantine, Season 1, Episodes 11 to 13
Airs Friday at 8 Pm Et on NBC
Just in time for its first season finale, Constantine develops both its side characters, like Manny the once annoying angel (Harold Perrineau), who is the real star of the penultimate episode “Angels and Ministers of Grace”, and Jim Corrigan (Emmet Scanlan), who plays a big role in the finale and main cast. The writers finally get to show John Constantine’s (Matt Ryan) smoking habit, and continue to look into his mix of passive and active responses to the Rising Darkness, and have Zed (Angelica Celaya) struggle with her visions in a physical and spiritual way while building friendships with Corrigan and Manny.
However, for all its character growth and exploration, Constantine is pretty content with being a case of the week supernatural show, with minimal connective tissue between the episodes, even if the finale does pull a couple...

Constantine, Season 1, Episode 5: “Danse Voudou”
Written by Christine Boylan
Directed by John Badham
Airs Fridays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
At first, “Danse Vaudou” seems like a supernatural murder mystery with some added flavor from Emmett Scanlan’s Southern-fried police detective Jim Corrigan, but writer Christine Boylan’s script quickly takes a turn for the better by connecting the case of the week to the personal lives of the victims as well as of John Constantine himself, Zed, and Papa Midnite. The episode uses New Orleans’ voodoo tradition as well as jazz and reggae music to drive the plot and differentiate it from the other settings Constantine and Zed have investigated throughout the series.
Probably the most interesting part of “Danse Vaudou” is the conflict between Constantine and Papa Midnite, which initially derives from the events of “The Devil’s Vinyl” but ends up being a battle between Midnite...

Once Upon A Time, Season 3, Episode 9: “Save Henry”
Written by Christine Boylan & Daniel T. Thomsen
Directed by Andy Goddard
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
There is no time for any slow pacing this week as Once Upon a Time quickly straps us in and shoots out of the gate. Right from the start, “Save Henry” shows potential to be the best episode of season three.
Aside from a quick visit into the past Enchanted Forest, the episode mostly deals with the group saving Henry and Pan’s doings on Neverland. The backstory is a nice little treat; it shows us how Regina came to adopt Henry and the early years of their life together. This is exciting for two reasons. One, we get to see Storybrooke once again. After visiting it briefly a few episodes ago, it’s great to be back with everyone there. The second...

Once Upon A Time, Season 3, Episode 5: “Good Form”
Written by Christine Boylan & Daniel T. Thomsen
Directed by Jon Amiel
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
“Good Form”, this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time, is all about Hook. The present day storyline as well as the past story arc have to do with one central person, and that is none other than our dear old captain himself.
Everything pretty much flows together seamlessly. The acting is phenomenal, as usual. “Good Form”, however, is just another filler episode for Once Upon a Time. It is there to move the plot along and get things that need to be done, done. Colin O’Donoghue is given a chance in the spotlight and he takes hold of it with no reservations. Since his appearance in season two, O’Donoghue has always managed to captivate us. He plays Hook with incredible grace,...

Once Upon A Time, Season 2, Episode 20: “The Evil Queen”
Written by Jane Espenson & Christine Boylan

Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Hold on to your seats! This week’s Once Upon a Time shot out of a cannon, with full force. Props need to be given strongly to the writers with this week’s episode. There was drama, action and nail biting suspense, as they lay the ground work for the closing of Season Two.
A few minutes into the episode and we discover that this week’s past Enchanted Forest storyline is going to be about Regina. The episodes that contain Regina’s past storyline are often entertaining, in the fact that Rumplestiltskin and Snow usually grace the plot at least once or twice. It’s nice seeing how the relationship with Rumplestiltskin and Regina has grown. Often in the past Enchanted Forest...

Written by Christine Boylan & Kalinda Vazquez
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
