Capcom's perennially popular survival horror video game franchise "Resident Evil" has been adapted for both film and television over the years, in live-action and animation. The franchise's cinematic debut began in 2002, loosely following the original game's plot of specialists investigating the nefarious pharmaceutical company the Umbrella Corporation. This leads to Umbrella unleashing the T-Virus, a genetically engineered virus that transforms those infected into ravenous, undead zombies.
While the live-action films have handled the video game source material with varying amounts of fidelity and controversy, there has also been a line of CG animated movies set in the same continuity as the games. Successful worldwide, the "Resident Evil" movies have earned their fair share of fans, including devotees of the games and those new to the franchise. With plenty of films to choose from across the original movie series, 2021 reboot, and animated features, here are the best "Resident Evil" films ranked from worst to best.

Whenever an actor steps behind the camera, one can’t help but wonder why they chose the material that they chose for their debut. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Bradley Cooper remaking A Star Is Born last year or Greg Kinnear this week with Phil. You just are inherently curious. It’s especially the case here, as Kinnear proves a capable filmmaker, though one in need of a stronger script. Yes, while Kinnear’s acting and directing here are solid, the writing isn’t up to snuff. The end result is a dramedy that is at times inane and at times moving, though unfortunately more so the former than the latter. At the movie’s start, Dr. Phil Maguire (Kinnear) is a dentist on the verge of suicide. In fact, he’s planning to do it, but just sort of chickens out. Then, a colleague refers a patient over to him.

There’s a feeling I always have when I’m watching Greg Kinnear in a movie. He can be a terrific actor. Yet even when he’s just okay, Kinnear seems like such a nice guy that I want him to succeed — I feel almost protective of him, as if he were my little brother. That more-than-skin-deep geniality is the source of Kinnear’s appeal, going all the way back to his hosting gig on “Talk Soup,” where he had the weird ability to invest even pure snark with good vibes.
Given that, when I watched “Phil,” the first movie Kinnear has directed (he also stars in it), you can bet that the protective impulse was in high gear. Yet “Phil,” I have to report, is one of those precious indie nothings that hits you like dandelion fluff. It’s the sort of film that still has its original, now-changed...

We meet Phil McGuire (Greg Kinnear) exiting his parked car while still in traffic to climb up a bridge railing. It’s a one hundred-plus foot drop into the water and he imagines taking the plunge before a group of teens with cellphones outstretched jolt him from the morbid sensation with excitable demands that he jump so they can enjoy the carnage. That’s a bold tonal mood on behalf of screenwriter Stephen Mazur and director Kinnear (his debut) because there’s actual dejection on their faces upon realizing Phil won’t comply with their Faces of Death desire to go viral. Here’s a man in obvious psychological pain and we’re asked to shrug the situation off for the first of many cheap laughs in a film that otherwise attempts heartfelt empathy.
I do believe Phil means well, but its script constantly undercuts that desire so its situational...

When self-published novel “The Shack” hit shelves back in 2007, first-time author William P. Young’s Christian drama was met with significant controversy, thanks to its inventive portrayal of the Holy Trinity as an African American woman, a young Middle-Eastern man and an Asian woman. Despite outcry from the exact kind of religious audience the book was pursuing, the book became an unexpected smash hit. Ten years later, it’s finally spawned a glossy, inevitable Hollywood adaptation – and one made palatable only because of that same off-beat trio. That’s particularly true for Octavia Spencer, who literally embodies God in the Stuart Hazeldine film.

After years of development, the TV series adaptation of Idw horror comic Locke & Key is headed to Netflix soon.
The Locke & Key TV series sailed troubled waters before landing on Netflix.
The live-action adaptation was initially set for Hulu, which ordered (and shot) a pilot adapting writer Joe Hill's Idw horror comic book series, with Carlton Cuse (Lost) set to serve as showrunner. Auspiciously, Andy Muschietti directed Hulu's pilot after Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson had to withdraw. Unfortunately, after all that, Hulu ended up passing on the project!
Netflix, however, came in for the rescue; a rescue that involved scrapping Hulu's pilot. Regardless, the Locke & Key TV series will finally arrive in February!

Following its financially successful theatrical run in 2013, the supernatural horror film Mama could get a sequel in the near future from the directors of 2014's well-received Starry Eyes.
News of the Mama sequel comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which reveals that Starry Eyes writers/directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch are in "final negotiations to rewrite and direct" the follow-up for Universal.
It's no surprise that Universal wants to move forward with a sequel, as the original film (directed by Andrés Muschietti and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro) was made for $15 million and ended up grossing $71 million domestically.
Mama centered on two sisters haunted by an eerie presence following their rescue from a five-year stay in the woods. The film starred Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, and Isabelle Nélisse. It's not officially known if the original cast will reprise their roles for the sequel, but TheWrap reports that...

We continue our hunt for an overlooked Christmas classic in the DVD bargain bin. Our latest treat? Grumpy Cat...
Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever is a hard film to write about.
Without wishing to exaggerate its effect, it almost makes you feel like you need to unlearn everything you thought you knew about cinema in order to give it a reasonable assessment. I suppose I should start by saying it’s not a 'good film', but then value judgements feel futile in the (adorable and super-smooshy) face of Grumpy Cat. Besides, whatever insult you could level at this film’s content is redundant. Odds are it’s already been covered by the mega-meta self-loathing that oozes from every scene.
What makes it so compelling, though, is the simple fact that it exists. That you can buy it on DVD. That you didn’t just pass out...

Title: The Games Maker Director: Juan Pablo Buscarini Starring: David Mazouz, Joseph Fiennes, Ed Asner, Megan Charpentier, Tom Cavanagh, Valentina Lodovini There is a kind of world that can exist in a film marketed specifically to young audiences that possesses equal parts misery and wonder. Such a universe can actually be quite grim in nature, yet the naïve, optimistic outlook of one plucky protagonist can negate the innate negativity and create instead a spirit of adventure. It’s a film starring Sundance Film Fest creator Robert Redford and another film starring Sundance mainstay James Franco that are the latest and last items to officially pad the 2015 edition. Ken Kwapis’ A Walk in the Woods (surely to be discussed as a companion piece to Gus Van Sant’s heavy Cannes contender The Sea of Trees) and Rupert Goold’s directorial debut, True Story – a story that is stranger than fiction close out the Premieres selections. Also announced we find items for New Frontier, Sundance Kids and the From the Collection items. And while the line-up is complete, the actual final piece to the puzzle might actually be a secret screening or two. This year I wager on Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups playing as a non official showing. Here’s the press release.

Despite its suggestive title, Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever — which premiered Saturday on Lifetime — is not a film about the birth of Jesus as seen through the eyes of a grouchy feline.
Related Scoop: Pan Am‘s Kelli Garner Cast as Marilyn Monroe in Lifetime Miniseries
It’s really a film about dognapping, divorce, bullying and the general failure of the American mall security system. Most importantly, though, it makes absolutely no sense — which is kind of the point. I think.

Late in Lifetime's "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever" TV-movie, the cat that launched a thousand memes objects to a plot twist by asking, "Is this not my movie?" The film (it debuts Saturday night at 8), written by "SpongeBob" vet and "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties" director Tim Hill (who also directed this) and Jeff Morris, seems at war with itself as to how much it should — or can — be Grumpy Cat's movie, and the answer is "not enough," unfortunately. But at least the movie is aware of that problem, since it opens with Grumpy Cat (aka Tardar Sauce) — played in voiceover by Aubrey Plaza, in a piece of casting that feels like destiny — getting excited at the thought of how disappointed we'll be "when you realize this movie is just a sappy melodrama about me, Grumpy Cat." Except it's only vaguely about Grumpy Cat, and primarily about Chrystal...

Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever movie actually exists and it will air on Lifetime. I'm sure some of you will even watch it because we're bound to have to some Grumpy Cat fans as readers. I personally don't get society's strange fascination with this whole Grumpy Cat thing, but that's the kind of society we live in today, folks. Here's the first trailer for the movie that features the voice of Aubrey Plaza as Grumpy Cat. The movie looks stupid as hell, and even the voice of Plaza can't save it. I posted the trailer, though, just in case some of you are curious.
Grumpy Cat "plays" a lonely feline who develops a sour outlook on life after living in a mall pet shop. Then, over the holidays, a 12-year-old girl named Chrystal (played by Megan Charpentier) enters the pet store and realizes she is the only one who can hear the cat talk.

This holiday season, Lifetime will attempt to answer the question that has been plaguing filmmakers everywhere since the dawn of social media – can we realistically pad an internet meme out to feature length? If the trailer for Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever is anything to go by, the answer is, unsurprisingly, a resounding ‘no.’ Or, to quote the TV movie’s highly inventive tagline, “Ho ho no.”
Remember the 2001 film Cats And Dogs – a live-action movie featuring real animals with human voices, acting out an amusing caper, with a stellar cast led by Jeff Goldblum, Sean Hayes and Tobey Maguire? That was an enjoyable project in its day, thirteen years ago. Now, here we are, in 2014, watching a trailer for a movie about a cat who became a web sensation by looking perpetually unimpressed. A tiny kitty with feline dwarfism named Tardar Sauce became an Internet sensation thanks to her permanently pissed-off mug. Dubbed "Grumpy Cat,” a photo of the grouchy darling was submitted on Reddit and the rest is Internet celebrity history. Except Grumpy Cat’s stardom has lasted much longer than the usual 15 minutes of fame... and now we can all gawk at the surly pussycat when her new movie premieres on Lifetime. Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever will feature Aubrey Plaza as the voice of Grumpy Cat, which is either the best or worst thing you’ll hear this week. Vulture advises that the movie centers on a 12-year-old girl named Chrystal (Megan Charpentier) who can communicate telepathically with Grumpy Cat — and now this is getting really weird...

"It's a Wonderful Life." "Christmas in Connecticut." That Muppets special where John Denver sings a bunch of songs with the Muppets and it makes you feel oddly gooey inside. Be prepared to add another title to the list of "certifiable Christmas classics" when "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever" premieres on Lifetime on November 29th. Just watch the trailer below for confirmation.

The internet has arrived, at least, to Lifetime: The meme-turned-franchise Grumpy Cat (née Tardar Sauce) stars in Lifetime's Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever, voiced by Aubrey Plaza. In the movie, a 12-year-old girl named Chrystal (Megan Charpentier) asks for "a friend on whom I can depend," which means she can communicate telepathically with Grumpy Cat! The two get into some serious high jinks, gifting her with her best Christmas ever (and Grumpy Cat's worst, aw). The movie airs Saturday, November 29, on Lifetime.

The claws are out this Christmas as the Internet's favorite cat meme gets its own holiday movie on Lifetime. Aubrey Plaza provides the voice of Grumpy Cat in a new trailer that shows the snarky feline as a young kitten being adopted by a little girl. See photos: 10 Biggest Christmas Day Box Office Openers (Photos) Young Chrystal, played by actress Megan Charpentier, has a holiday wish for, “a friend – one on whom I can depend.” Little does she know what a scrooge her four-legged companion actually is. “You really screwed up your big wish,” Grumpy Cat tells her new owner.

The world does not need a movie about Grumpy Cat, but it's happening, and it's ridiculous. This is one of those movies that makes me shake my head in shame at Hollywood. That being said, this is a Lifetime movie, and they are sure to make a lot of money from it because, for some reason, people love Grumpy Cat and have a fascination with the feline. I just don't get it.
Mashable reports that Aubrey Plaza will voice the cat in the film, which is called Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. Plaza definitely seems like the right choice for the role because she's got that grumpy monotone voice. Doing something like this just seems like a step down for the actress who has been building a decent movie career. Here's a description of the story:

While I don’t seek out Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) like I used to, but heck if she still doesn’t make me smile whenever I come across her sweet face. The Lifetime network usually broadcasts insufferable movies of the week (Saved by the Bell whatever) but this one is what I would call required viewing.
Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) is set to voice the famous feline in Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever and the first image is above for you to click on to enlarge.
In Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, Tardar Sauce is a cat living in a pet shop at the mall. Her lonely existence has led to a sour outlook, but her life changes one day when 12-year-old Chrystal (Megan Charpentier, Mama) walks into the store. The two become friends after Chrystal realizes she is the only person who can hear Tardar Sauce talk.

Grumpy Cat speaks! Or, more accurately, Aubrey Plaza is going to be speaking as Grumpy Cat in an upcoming Lifetime original movie. Titled "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever," the new film will feature the cat in question (real name Tardar Sauce) as "a lonely feline living in a mall pet shop." As for the grumpiness, the synopsis explains that, "Because she never gets chosen by customers, she develops a sour outlook on life." It is true that most cats can't talk, and in the film only one person will be able to hear Grumpy Cat speak. That is a 12-year-old girl, Chrystal, who meets Grumpy Cat at the mall and develops a relationship with her. The movie is directed by Tim Hill who has plenty of experience with talking animals having directed "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "Garfield 2." He also co-wrote the screenplay for this original alongside Jeff Morris, who...

Mama comes from the twisted minds of Andrés Muschietti and Bárbara Muschietti and is the result of Guillermo Del Toro discovering their 2008 short film Mamá and being so impressed by it that he helped the duo develop a feature film around the concept with bigger toys to play with in the sandbox.
I could begin this sentence by going into the plot and setting up the storyline for you all, but Mama is one of those horror films where you are best going into blind and discovering plot details for yourself and even beginning to describe how this...

The movie called Mama, fer pete’s sake. And it gives us Jessica Chastain as a punky dyed-black-haired rock chick who, as our introduction to her, is happily shouting “Guess who’s not pregnant!” to her boyfriend from the totally clichéd “waiting for the pee stick to do its divination in the the bathroom” scene. I figured, This is it for the poor woman. She’s doomed to maternity anyway. Because I already knew what Mama was about: that she and the boyfriend would be taking in his nieces because they’ve been orphaned by teh spooky or something. That’ll learn a rock chick who doesn’t want babies. But oh! Buried somewhere in this supernatural horror is a slyly subversive allegory on mother love.
