Paramount Global mogul Shari Redstone, who deliberated for months about whether and how to relinquish control of her family’s film and TV empire, now formally has a new offer to consider.
A consortium led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. — heir to his family’s Seagram’s liquor fortune and an executive who formerly ran Universal Studios when his father owned its parent company — unveiled a competing bid for Paramount and Redstone’s holding vehicle, National Amusements.
Bronfman submitted a roughly $4.3 billion bid to acquire National Amusements, The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 19. His offer includes $2.4 billion in debt and equity for National Amusements, and Bronfman also would contribute $1.5 billion to Paramount’s balance sheet, which could be used to pay down debt, according to the paper, which cites multiple sources. Bronfman’s bid also adds the $400 million breakup fee if National Amusements was to go with a rival deal.

Robert Klane, screenwriter of films including “Weekend at Bernie’s” and “Where’s Poppa?,” died from kidney failure on Aug. 29 at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif. He was 81.
Klane’s son Jon shared the news with Variety in a statement, which reads, “Klane’s satirical and daring writing pushed the boundaries of good taste, while depicting the unfairness of life through themes of sex, family, madness and death.”
“Bob had a brilliant comedy mind that went deeper and deeper to get to the truth,” said filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, who appeared in “Where’s Poppa?” “Most people have a censor in their minds and know how far they can go. Bob didn’t have a censor. That’s what made him great and set him apart. He was fearless.”
Klane wrote the screenplays for dark comedies such as 1989’s “Weekend at Bernie’s” and its 1993 sequel, as well as 1970’s “Where’s Poppa?,...

The protagonist of the new Netflix film written by Lena Waithe, Beauty, is an enigma. Her facial expressions are no compass for her feelings. Her eyes stay wide, lips perpetually parted. Tonal variations are scarce too: Grace Marie Bradley, the actress who plays the titular character, delivers her lines in a husky, suggestive whisper. It’s difficult to tell how intentional all this mystery is, which makes the occasional raised eyebrow, playful smirk or tear streaming down the face hard to interpret.
You wonder: Who is Beauty? Is she simply a sheltered girl groomed by domineering parents for stardom? A young adult navigating the bounds of a secret relationship with her girlfriend? A gifted singer exclusively interested in honing her musical talents?
And then: What is Beauty? Is it a portrait of a young woman balancing family, love and career? An allegory about...

The streets of New York City are a constantly changing, adventurous and sometimes dangerous environment. But that doesn’t bug photographer Carrie Boretz, who has been snapping the scenes and characters of the Big Apple for more 40 years.
In her new book, Street, she highlights some of her favorite images from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. From the parties with Andy Warhol at Studio 54 to covering the reactions of John Lennon’s murder, Boretz has always been immersed in the intensity of New York City. Monsters and Critics adores Donna Summer. Boston native Donna Summer, who passed away last May, was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past spring during a star-studded ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in La. Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child began her tribute saying, “Dim the lights, sweet darlings, because we’re about to induct another queen into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” Donna Summers inducted into the Rock and Roll... by dtwmjb1 Rowland described Summer’s voice as “sent from above” and praised her ability to move people. Love him or hate him, you have to admit Spike Lee is a fearless filmmaker. Whether he's publicly taking on Clint Eastwood or Quentin Tarantino, or perhaps remaking a movie that was an absolute critical darling, Lee is a decidedly bold maybe even brash artist. So it makes sense that he's being eyed to helm the biopic about infamous record company executive Neil Bogart. THR reports Lee has entered into negotiations to helm Spinning Gold, as the American Film Market kicks off. Should he sign on, Lee would be directing pop megastar turned actor Justin Timberlake in the lead role. Penned by Bogart's son Timothy Scott Bogart, Spinning Gold follows the music impresario's rise from being a poor kid on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, to the record exec who launched the careers of such iconic musicians as Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Kiss, Donna Summers and The...

Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven't seen Season 3, Episode 7 of Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," titled "Oy, Faye!"
While Bravo shook up the third season of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" with an epic, profanity-laced scream-fest last week, it seems as though the series returned to its previously sleepy ways. This is probably because Brandi's "bombshell" was still edited out of the entire show. Seriously, Bravo? You pull this with not one, but two episodes? I do not appreciate it.
Viewers returned to Brandi's war with Adrienne and Paul Maloof at Mauricio's windy rooftop party. We were reminded of Adrienne's whole Brandi "slept till 3:00 p.m. and left [her] kids alone" accusation, and witnessed a drawn out version of the Maloofs exiting the party.
After they left, the housewives avec Camille, but sans Lisa and Yolanda, were left to ride that drama wave for as long as possible.

Once upon a time, we made fun of Justin Timberlake for acting. Then came "The Social Network" and everyone had to tip their hat to him as something other than a guy bringing sexy back. Now Timberlake appears to be aiming for the kind of gold Jamie Foxx and Reese Witherspoon enjoyed, as he has signed on for a dramatic biopic based on the life of producer Neil Bogart. Junkies of 1970s music know that Bogart was the founder of Casablanca Records. He encouraged the rise of disco, opening many a tender young eye to just who and what The Village People represented. He had Donna Summers on his label. He signed Kiss and made them an Army. He helped bubble-gum pop flourish, and Bogart was on his way to riding the New Wave when he died from cancer at the terribly young age of 39. Bogart's tale is one...

You might remember Dan Kois' notorious piece in The New York Times Magazine about "cultural vegetables," in which the author admitted to suffering "a kind of culture fatigue" when dealing with movies he found slow, or deliberate, or flat-out boring. I wrote my own response at the time; now, Times critics Manohla Dargis and A.O. Scott have weighed in with their own piece entitled "In Defense of Slow and Boring." Critic Fight! (Say it like Cartman from "South Park.")
As their title suggests, Dargis and Scott do not side with Kois on the issue of cultural vegetables. Dargis connects his use of the word "boring" with her use of the word "thinking," as in any movie that requires you to think a little, that doesn't deaden your senses into submission with an assault of noise and light, is labeled as boring. Here is more:
"So, is boring bad? Is thinking?...

I went to a really fun event last week at the The Cinefamily the venue (also known as the Silent Movie Theater). I hope that most of you in L.A. know about this great place.
The night sleepover party themed. The main event was a double feature of a film released in 1980 called Foxes, which starred Jodie Foster, features a teenage skateboarding Scott Baio, and a creepy cradle robbing Randy Quaid.
There was complimentary wine provided by Bear Flag Winery and delicious gelato from Paciugo.
This trailer does not do justice at all to the insane campy brilliance of this film's dialog.

From Dolly Parton to Donna Summers, numerous songwriters have written about the humorous (and sometimes horrifying) ups and downs of the work world. Although many of these songs were recorded decades ago, their lyrics still manage to strike a chord, with references to commuting, caffeine, and other timeless aspects of office life. Add this Workday Playlist to your iPod for musical inspiration (or commiseration) anytime. 1. 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton) - This catchy little ditty won Dolly Parton two Grammy awards. It also holds the distinction of being one of the few popular songs featuring typewriter noises (listen closely!). With commuting woes and cranky bosses, "9 to 5" gives workplace angst a voice. Also check out the movie by the same name. 2. Manic Monday (The Bangles) - We've all had those kinds...
