Nicholas Vince in I Am Monsters
Nicholas Vince went from being a monster-obsessed child to playing iconic monsters in his work with Clive Barker in Hellraiser and Nightbreed. Fulfilling his childhood fantasy never quelled his enthusiasm for monsters and horror. Aside from acting, Vince has published the short story collections What Monsters Do and Other People's Darkness, and in 2019, he took to the stage for his one-man show I Am Monsters! Now, he has turned his stage show into a film, where he speaks candidly about his personal and professional life.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Vince discussed the horrors of Thatcherite Britain and its lasting legacy, his love of intelligent horror and the struggles confronting cinema.
Paul Risker: I caught a monologue by James O'Brien recently where he spoke about how decisions by then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, allowed Rupert Murdoch to grow his media empire. It left me thinking,...

Prompted by the massive success of the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, ABC released dozens of thrillers and horror movies under their Movie of the Week banner between 1969 and 1975. Starting in 1973, the network branched out into late-night programming intended to compete with talk show king Johnny Carson over on NBC, and the five feature-length telefilms collected as The Classic Ghosts by Kino Cult originally aired in that slot.
These telefilms were shot live on two-inch tape in a manner akin to daytime dramas, which does lead to the occasional flubbed line of dialogue. Furthering the comparison, two of the movies were directed by Lela Swift, who helmed over half of Dark Shadows’s approximately 1,200 episodes. Gloria Monty, who directed two others, went on to radically reshape the floundering soap General Hospital in the late ’70s. It’s notable that the creative team behind the telefilms were mostly women. Besides directors Swift and Monty,...

In “Amy,” Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning gut-punch about pop icon Amy Winehouse (and to a lesser extent in biographical docs “Senna” and “Diego Maradona” too), the British director employs an emotional rhythm by which his subject’s tragic end seems foredestined right from the start. Perhaps “2073,” his new hybrid docufiction is a natural expansion of that impulse — a blend of archival footage, CG enhancement and speculative fiction that applies similar retroactive dismay to a cautionary tale about a near-future dystopia, and the current rising tide of everything-is-terrible that may bring it about.
Unfortunately, what is highly effective as a biographical rise-and-fall tactic is far less so as a means to make a grand statement about imminent societal collapse. It’s not clear quite who is going to be galvanized into action to avert catastrophe when according to “2073,” almost everything that will lead to civilization’s demise — from AI to climate...

Lbc radio host James O’Brien has condemned Mark Spencer following a comment the Conservative MP made about China.
Former chief whip Spencer, who serves as the MP for Sherwood, was discussing the reports that Liz Truss had been targeted by Russian spies on Sky News, claiming that she had “clearly” been hacked while she was foreign secretary.
When it was put to him that Truss’s personal phone could have been at the centre of the breach, Spencer said that “some little man in China” could be listening into his own private conversations.
“We all talk on personal phones, don’t we?” he said. “I ring my wife, maybe there’s some little man in China listening to the conversations between me and my wife.”
The remark has been widely criticised by figures including Labour politicians and others.
O’Brien, who hosts a daily talk show on Lbc, delivered a damning assessment on Twitter.

Martin Green has been appointed managing director for the operation, which will see the BBC broadcasting in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu).
Green was recently the chief creative officer of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and was head of ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He will report to Kate Phillips, BBC’s director of unscripted.
Rachel Ashdown is the lead commissioner for the BBC, who will work with BBC Studios to produce three live shows: two semi-finals and one grand final.

Keke Palmer has spoken out after her film Being Mortal was shut down amid allegations against her co-star, Bill Murray.
In April, Searchlight Pictures suspended production on the film after Murray was accused of “inappropriate behaviour”.
The film, which was Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, is based on surgeon Atul Gawande’s 2014 book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. Ansari also wrote the film and was set to co-star alongside Murray, Palmer and Seth Rogen.
Since the sudden end of production, no further work has taken place on Being Mortal and it is currently unclear as to whether it will ever be completed.
In a recent interview, Palmer shared her thoughts about the scrapped project and expressed her hope that Ansari could find a way to make it work.
“If somebody could figure it out, it would be Aziz,” she told reporters at Variety.
“Obviously, we got...

Reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were shot dead while Parker interviewed local Chamber of Commerce head Vicki Gardner, who was injured in the incident and is now in a stable condition.
Suspect Vester Lee Flanagan II, who went by the name Bryce Williams on air, later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was located by authorities.
