Deep-sea explorer who survived a record descent to more than 1,000 feet in a diving bell. He used a new mixture of gases to lessen the risks of the bends. His diving companion, Peter Small, did not survive the ascent.
He studied philosophy, mathematics and theoretical physics at the University of Zurich.
