Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the biggest stars in the world. At one point, thanks to his work in movies like "Fast Five" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," he gained the unofficial designation of "franchise Viagra" for what his name meant to a film in a pre-existing franchise. In the pandemic era, Johnson's reputation has taken a hit with films like "Jungle Cruise" and "Black Adam" failing to live up to expectations. Now, his latest movie "Red One" has arrived. It's big, it's expensive, and it's largely being framed as a flop. But is that fair? Perhaps not.
Director Jake Kasdan's "Red One" opened to $34 million at the domestic box office over the weekend. The film had previously rolled out in many overseas markets and has thus far collected $50 million internationally, for an $84 million global running total. On Sunday, it looked like Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ Christmas movie Red One had opened on the higher end of higher end of expectations with a $34.1 million domestic debut. But final grosses for the weekend show the big-budget holiday pic coming in lower at $32.1 million, according to final numbers released Monday by Amazon MGM Studios.
Overseas, Red One — which will need exceptionally strong legs to be considered a win theatrically — took in $14.7 million from 75 markets in its second outing for a foreign tally of $50 million and $82.1 million globally. Amazon MGM wisely chose to open the film early overseas in order to avoid a direct showdown with Paramount’s Gladiator II, which launched internationally this weekend ahead of its Nov. 22 domestic debut.
Gladiator II roared to a record-shattering $87 million from 63 markets — the biggest R-rated international opening in history for Paramount, as well as the biggest foreign launch ever for director Ridley Scott.

Dwayne Johnson’s latest holiday movie “Red One” topped the weekend box office. Still, questions remain over its hefty $250 million production budget. The film, starring Johnson as Santa’s chief of security and Chris Evans as a bounty hunter, debuted in 4,032 cinemas to mixed reviews.
Despite tepid critical reviews (the film now has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences responded positively, awarding it a promising A- CinemaScore. The film has already grossed $50 million abroad, increasing its total to $84.1 million.
Amazon MGM has confidence in its theatrical plan. “Whether or not people like it, the value of these movies is different for our business model,” said Kevin Wilson, the company’s head of theatrical distribution. He underlined that the theater premiere is a huge marketing campaign before the picture hits streaming services.
However, industry analysts remain unconvinced. “The production cost was estimated at $250 million. “That’s a lot of money for a Santa Claus story,...

Updated: Amazon MGM Studio’s big tentpole of the year Red One staggered into action over the weekend with a confirmed $32.1m number one North American debut.
While not a poor number in and of itself for an original film, the reported $250m price tag will raise eyebrows. Despite generally poor reviews, filmgoers gave it an A- Cinemascore, offering hope that if the family holiday season film plays into the holiday season, it might reach a decent number in North America to complement the $51.1m and counting international tally.

“Red One,” a Christmas-set action comedy starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Santa’s head of security, unwrapped a soft $34.1 million from 4,032 North American theaters in its box office debut.
Those ticket sales were enough to top the domestic box office, ending the three-week reign of “Venom: The Last Dance.” However, the Amazon MGM film cost $250 million before accounting for global marketing efforts of roughly $100 million. So “Red One” is bound to spark yet another debate about what qualifies as a success at a time when streaming services are scrambling traditional business models. Case in point: “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which was released by Warner Bros., was instantly labeled a flop with $37 million to start against a $200 million budget. But last year’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” from Apple and director Martin Scorsese, was categorized more favorably after opening to $23 million despite a similarly huge price tag.
Overseas, where Warner Bros.

When it was announced that Dwayne Johnson’s next flick, Red One, will be a Christmas movie, with a stellar $250 million budget, and the likes of Chris Evans, Jk Simmons, and Kiernan Shipka playing the leading roles, fans thought that they had a masterpiece on their hands.
A week since the movie hit theatres, these hopes have been dashed to the ground. For many, the movie looks all set to pass into oblivion even before the Christmas spirit officially sets in. And if its dismal run at the box office is any hint, it is headed down that road.

After three weeks at the top of the box office in the U.S., Sony Pictures' Ssu threequel Venom: The Last Dance has finally been dethroned - but the movie that claimed the No. 1 spot from the Lethal Protector didn't exactly make a huge splash.
Amazon MGM's holiday-themed fantasy adventure, Red One, took in around $11 million on Friday (this includes $3.7 million from Thursday previews), and is now on track to make an estimated $30 million over the weekend.
This wouldn't usually be considered a particularly disappointing bow, but with a reported budget of over $250 million, it might take a Christmas miracle for the movie to turn a profit for the studio.
Red One could perform better overseas, and it is the only major new release this weekend. Audiences also seem to be enjoying the movie, as it has received a surprisingly positive A- CinemaScore.

It’s beginning to look a lot like $30 million for the opening weekend of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ mega-budget Christmas actioner “Red One,” coming in on the shorter side of projections. The Amazon MGM Studios feature unwrapped $10.9 million from 4,032 theaters across opening day and preview screenings in North America.
That’s not exactly a jolly result for a special-effects adventure playing premium large format auditoriums and sporting a whopping $250 million production budget, plus sizable marketing costs. Unless the Seven Bucks production can stay relevant among the blitz of “Wicked,” “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2” arriving ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, it seems unlikely that “Red One” will see green in its theatrical run.
The question remains of how much Amazon really cares about being associated with lukewarm theatrical returns, what with the market cap north of $2 trillion and all. The cost of “Red One” doesn’t seem as daunting in that context.

$3.8 billion. That’s the amount of money Clint Eastwood’s films have grossed at the North American box office throughout his career. A superstar since the 1960s, Eastwood is rare in that almost all of his biggest blockbusters, including all the Dirty Harry movies, were all made for Warner Bros. It’s been his home studio since about the time he made The Outlaw Josey Wales. He’s made everything from Oscar-winners to action movies, to movies where he’s chilling with his pal Clyde the Orangutan for them, and they almost always ended up at least breaking even. Sure, he’s had a few flops, but even in his golden years, he still cranked out smash hits for them, with American Sniper making over half a billion dollars, while The Mule and Sully both made over $100 million domestically. Even when his movies didn’t do well, Eastwood keeps his...

Jumanji director Jake Kasdan's Christmas-themed fantasy adventure, Red One, arrived in theatres today, and things are not looking good for the critically-panned movie's opening weekend at the domestic box office.
After taking in just $3.7 million in Thursday previews, the Amazon MGM film is on track to make between $30 million and $35 million this weekend, with some projections as low at $25 million. Taking a massive budget of $250 million (plus marketing costs) into account, and analysts believe it’ll take a Christmas miracle for Red One to turn a profit.
The movie could perform better overseas, of course, and it is the only major new release this weekend, so it should comfortably take the No. 1 spot from the surprisingly resilient Venom: The Last Dance.
Though the movie does have its share of defenders, Red One currently sits at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 106 reviews. "Wrapped in slick packaging but wholly lacking in holiday magic,...

Christmas has arrived early at the box office.
Amazon MGM Studio’s holiday film Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, earned $3.7 million in Thursday previews before opening everywhere across North America on Friday (the number also includes grosses from other early access screenings). The big-budget tentpole will be playing in a total of 4,032 cinemas this weekend, including Imax, Dolby Cinema and other premium large-format screens.
Tracking shows the movie opening in the $30 million to $35 million range domestically. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the Seven Bucks production overseas, where Red One opened to $28 million this year in order to avoid a direct showdown with Paramount’s Gladiator II, which is launching this weekend at the international box office a week ahead of its domestic debut. (Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel could do as much as $80 million or more in its foreign bow.)

Chicago – “Red One” won’t be joining the pantheon of perennial Christmas classics anytime soon, and comes up short even when compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Jingle All The Way.” But at least it’s good natured in its attempt at Yuletide franchise building, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is at least watchable.
The Rock stars as Callum, the head of security of E.L.F., for an absurdly jacked Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons). This Santa does weightlifting in his spare time, and carries a physique that suggests centuries of snacking on Power Bars instead of milk and cookies. As it usually goes in the movies, Callum is one day away from retirement and running dangerously low on Christmas spirit, until an evil witch kidnaps Santa. Her plan is to keep his list, check it twice, see who’s been naughty and nice … and then make the naughty ones pay for all eternity.

Halloween is over, so that means it’s time for the Christmas season — and Dwayne Johnson is here to usher in the yuletide early with “Red One.”
His Christmas action movie with Chris Evans has made $3.7 million at the box office so far in Thursday previews. The Amazon MGM film is on track to make between $30 million and $35 million, with some projections lower at $25 million and others as high as $40 million. With a massive budget of $250 million, plus marketing costs, it’ll take a Christmas miracle for “Red One” to become a profitable hit at the box office. However, Amazon MGM is also focused on driving people to its Amazon Prime Video streaming service (where “Red One” will later land), so box office grosses aren’t as high on the deep-pocketed company’s wish list.

If there was a Guinness World Record for the most jacked-up Santa in a big-budget, Hollywood-financed, holiday-themed action-comedy, Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) would win hands down and biceps curled for his committed portrayal of Father Christmas in Jake Kasdan's otherwise disposable, forgettable Red One. Simmons' Crossfit-loving, hyper-trophied Santa not only unironically loves those fading odes to crass commercialism, American shopping malls but also works out obsessively in his private gym back at the North Pole, relying on his personal security guard and nominal head of Elf (Enforcement Logistics and Fortification), Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), to spot him when he goes big on bench-pressing free weights....

Take those jack o’lanterns to the dumpster, it’s Christmas time, at least according to the multiplex. One such flick is already getting moviegoers in the “spirit” with the modestly budgeted The Best Christmas Pageant Ever packing them in after only a week. Well, it’s time for the big studios to load up your stocking with lots of action and firepower. Hey, we get plenty of holiday comedies and romances, so how about a butt-kickin” Kringle? That’s the formula for this, an expansion of the movie within a movie “The Day the Reindeer Died” from the opening of 1988’s Scrooged, along with lotsa’ laughs in between explosions and a heartful message snuck in. Hopefully, it comes together like a warm fruitcake (and probably tastier) in Red One.
Unlike many holiday tales (especially variants of “A Christmas Carol”), this one begins with a flashback as little Jack O’Malley...

Over the years, there have been lots of films about Father Christmas, including Miracle on 34th Street, The Santa Clause, and Santa Claus: The Movie, just to name a few. Add to that list Red One, which asks: What if someone kidnapped good ole Saint Nick?
The film starts with the real Santa (J.K. Simmons) posing as a mall Santa in Philadelphia, accompanied by his trusted bodyguard/head of security, Callum (Dwayne Johnson). After talking to some wide-eyed children about what they want for Christmas, Santa – code named “Red One” by his security team – heads off on his supersonic sleigh and giant magical reindeer to return to the North Pole.
Once back home, Santa and Callum start working out to get ready for the big night. This will be Callum’s last trip with the jolly old...

Terrorists have come to the North Pole, looking to kidnap Santa Claus, and the only man who can stop them is one of the biggest action stars in the world: Lee Majors, er, Dwayne Johnson. Indeed, Jake Kasdan’s Red One plays so unabashedly like a mega-budget remake of the Majors-starring Night the Reindeer Died made-for-tv movie featured in Richard Donner’s Scrooged that Amazon might owe Paramount Pictures a royalty check.
Kasdan and screenwriter Chris Morgan certainly commit to the bit, but there aren’t enough memorable moments here to make Red One a holiday classic. And, ultimately, what’s most surprising here is that the little that does stick stems from moments where the film is as serious as a heart attack about the most fantastical elements of its premise.

Dwayne Johnson is pleased with his latest movie, Red One, and believes it should be released on Imax screens like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
In an interview, the Black Adam actor said that he watched Nolan’s World War II epic in the same Imax screening room the director uses to screen his films. After experiencing Nolan’s film on Imax, he felt Red One would be a “game changer” if screened the same way.
“With Red One, our intention was to make a movie that you can enjoy on the biggest screen possible,” Johnson told Imax in an interview. “Legitimately, the biggest screens possible are Imax. I was midway through shooting Red One and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched in the Imax theater where Christopher Nolan watches and screens his movies. Him and Emma [Thomas], his wife. I even asked to let me sit where Chris sits.

The principals of Seven Bucks Productions –Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia – are between The Rock and a hard place.
The 12-year-old film and TV shop was one of the earliest prototypes for a modern production company built around a megastar. These were businesses created to give more control and equity to figures like Johnson and his contemporaries. But as Hollywood struggles with consolidation and a cash crunch, scaling past the big name behind the brand may be essential for their long-term survival.
Some celebrity-backed companies have chosen to move into ancillary businesses beyond the movies and shows that made an actor an A-lister. Witherspoon, for instance, has become more consequential to book publishing than anyone might have predicted when Hello Sunshine launched. And Robbie and her partners at LuckyChap haven’t just made projects for the “Barbie” actress. Guided by great taste, they’ve partnered with cutting-edge creatives...

The internet, honestly, doesn’t hold back. It’s pretty common to see people sharing all sorts of opinions online, whether it’s about a movie, TV show, song, or artist. But sometimes, those opinions can be pretty harsh because they’re just too honest, and that ends up affecting and influencing everyone. That’s exactly what happened with Red One, the movie that’s about to hit theaters this month.

It can be tricky keeping track of which movies release each week, especially with the holiday season ushering in a tidal wave of awards films and four-quadrant blockbusters. With 2024’s biggest films just around the corner, check out what is coming to theaters in November.
Releasing Nov. 15 is Amazon MGM Studios’ “Red One,” a Christmas action comedy that follows the North Pole’s head of security and an infamous bounty hunter as they attempt to save Santa from holiday-hating kidnappers. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu and J.K. Simmons.
Also on Friday, “The World According to Allee Willis” arrives in theaters. Starring Pamela Adlon, Stephen Bray, Julie Brown and Mark Cuban, the documentary chronicles the life of Allee Willis, a wildly successful yet widely unknown songwriter and artist who began filming her life in the 1950s.

Christian Wolff, Ben Affleck’s character from the 2016 action thriller The Accountant, will be returning to the big screen next year – and his comeback is going to be a violent one. The Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that they’ve given The Accountant 2 an R rating for strong violence, and language throughout. That happens to be the same rating the first movie received, for the exact same reasons. Coming our way from Amazon MGM Studios, the film is scheduled to be released on April 25, 2025. That puts it in direct competition with the video game-inspired horror movie Until Dawn, and means it will be in theatres for one week before the Marvel movie Thunderbolts* arrives.

On the recent episode of Good Morning America, viewers didn’t see Robin Roberts at her regular spot.
Typically, she appears seated between Michael Strahan and George Stephanopoulos, the show’s co-anchors.
Her recent absence arrived amid Strahan’s return to GMA after his controversial televised moment during a Veterans Day tribute show.
That incident occurred on another Fox network during Strahan’s appearance on Fox NFL Sunday as he and his co-stars stood for the National Anthem.
While his Fox colleagues placed their hands over their hearts, Strahan stood with his hands below his waist, one hand gripping his other wrist.
Many viewers called for networks to fire the Pro Football Hall of Famer from his TV jobs for a “disrespectful” act.

It’s Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans to the rescue.
That’s the hope in any case as their new Christmas movie, Red One, opens across North America this weekend after a tough fall. Tracking suggests the action-adventure movie will unpack a domestic debut in the $30 million to $35 million range for Amazon MGM Studios before enjoying a long run through the year-end holidays (fingers crossed).
However, there will be plenty of chatter about the movie’s box office performance considering it cost $250 million to make. A major legacy studio in the same situation would come under intense scrutiny if a film carrying that price tag opened to those numbers, but Amazon insists its business model is entirely different and fueled by subscribers, and not just box office. It also hopes to launch a new film franchise.
And exhibitors are certainly happy to play the first proper Christmas movie since before...

Will “Red One,” a Christmas action-comedy where Dwayne Johnson plays Santa’s head of security, bring movie theaters a box office bounty?
The film, from Amazon MGM, is targeting $30 million to $35 million from 4,032 locations in its first weekend of release. Independent tracking services are mixed, suggesting that “Red One” could earn as little as $25 million and as much as $40 million in its debut.
Ticket sales on the higher end of that range would be decent for an original holiday film. However, “Red One” cost $250 million before accounting for global marketing efforts. So either way, the movie will need positive word-of-mouth to portend a long life in theaters and justify its cost. Of course, Amazon MGM cares about much more than box office grosses and maintains that its big-budget tentpoles don’t need to score on the big screen to be deemed a success. Kiernan Shipka is looking back on how “wild” it was to play Sally Draper on “Mad Men.”
Shipka said during Sony Music Entertainment’s “Dinner’s On Me Podcast,” hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, that playing Sally across seven seasons of the critically acclaimed series still has her “psychoanalyzing” the nuances of the role 10 years later.
“Mad Men” debuted in 2007 and concluded in 2015. Shipka’s Sally was the daughter of Jon Hamm’s Don Draper and January Jones’ Betty Draper.
“What I thought was really wild was that I was watching her go through stuff that, at the time, I was feeling in a really natural way,” Shipka said. “But now as sort of an adult, I can psychoanalyze and go, ‘Oh, no, she was grieving there, and acting out.’ At the time, I think I understood her as much as she understood herself.”

When Warner Bros. quietly dropped Clint Eastwood’s latest film into just a handful of U.S. theaters last month, plenty of people took notice. Despite rolling “Juror #2” out at Los Angeles’ AFI Fest — where our own critic Christian Zilko slapped a “Critic’s Pick” designation on it and hailed it as “one of the best studio films of 2024” — the worryingly anti-filmmaker studio did little else in the way of supporting this original legal thriller from one of our most accomplished living filmmakers.
The film was released in less than three dozen U.S. cities during its first week of release, and though a few more were added for its second week, finding screenings in even major metropolitan areas has proven tough for Eastwood fans. It really shouldn’t be: The film is indeed one of the best studio efforts of the year, the kind of adult-skewing fare smart cinephiles remain hungry for,...

“Nosferatu” screened for critics and Academy members over the past week to rave first reactions. Mind you that first-reactions fever can lead to overpraise that sours into less enthusiastic reviews. Take “Gladiator II,” which sent first-look viewers (which also included AMPAS and press) dancing into the streets a couple of weeks ago, but reviews that broke today (including IndieWire’s own) were more muted in their praise.
On this week’s edition of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio are unified in their praise of “Nosferatu,” which Focus Features opens as surely R-rated counter-programming on Christmas Day. Anne points out that Academy voters are bound to be seduced by the film’s serious attention to 19th century period detail and vernacular. But it’s not a baldly commercial movie and, as with any Robert Eggers joint, may struggle to sink its teeth into audiences. Lily-Rose Depp...
