The best mockumentary TV comedy series owe much of their popularity to The Office and, since the mid-aughts, have been a staple. A mockumentary — or “mock documentary” — is exactly what it sounds like a TV show or movie that’s scripted but presented as if it’s a documentary. It’s a type of show that’s grown especially popular in the comedy genre. Something about the contrast between the fictional events and characters being depicted in a faux-documentary style heightens the comedic elements.

As mentioned, The Office (U.S.), which ran from 2005 to 2013, kick-started the mockumentary-style trend in television, mainstreaming the use of to-the-camera interviews and other fourth-wall-breaking gags. Although the type of show hit a saturation point for a time, the currently airing Abbott Elementary revived the TV mockumentary genre, proving that mockumentary TV comedy series are as enduring as traditional multi-camera sitcoms.

Not the only Halloween-ready franchise being resuscitated this month, “V/H/S/94” puts back in action the omnibus series that was last seen seven years ago with disappointing third entry “V/H/S: Viral.” This belated return lands closer in quality to the 2012 kickoff feature than the following year’s superior “V/H/S/2,” as a mixed bag of entertainingly diverse if variably successful horror shorts. Going straight to genre streaming platform Shudder on Oct. 6, it should provide fans with a satisfying enough, seasonally apt new package of macabre tales still linked by a faux-found-footage concept.

Following a rousing world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival last month, director Josh Koffman keeps the Canadian genre film flame burning with his wickedly nasty thriller Dead Dreams. The film is slated to open in Canadian theatres beginning October 14th in Toronto.

Synopsis:

Carl finds himself in a deserted motel suffering from memory loss. He is visited by a mysterious man that he comes to know as the Sandman. As Carl learns more about the life he has recently forgotten, he is forced to face the worst kind of evil: seeking vengeance against a psychopathic serial killer who has brutally murdered his wife.
