Returning to his native French after a dabbling in the Queen's English for last year's Tiff entry The Young Victoria, Quebec writer-director Jean-Marc Vallée joins forces with France's preeminent triple threat Vanessa Paradis (aka Miss Johnny Depp) who ditches the glam for grime, playing a cash-strapped single mother caring for her young, disabled son in '60s, not-so-swinging France.
Her story of hardships and hard love is intertwined with that of Antoine (singer/DJ Kevin Parent in his first major film role), a newly-separated, newly-in-love father of two struggling to deal with the guilt of leaving his wife, who herself is having vivid nightmares that are somehow connected to Jacqueline (Paradis).
Crafting a supernatural love story, Vallée weaves mystical scenes of old Paris and modern Montreal, set to a carefully selected soundtrack that includes Sigur Ros, Pink Floyd and Bon Iver, and investigates love in its many powerful, all-encompassing and even dangerous forms.

With a pair of domestic poster releases, a possible Venice/Telluride/Tiff selection for Café De Flore [09.26 in Quebec] certainly appears to be in the cards. Jean-Marc Vallée whose fourth feature, the 2005 breakout film C.R.A.Z.Y. helped anchor interest from abroad and led to The Young Victoria, is most likely in the mixing stages with this Quebec-France co-production, which is only his second feature writing credit. Inspired by the legendary Parisian hang-out. The film follows two story lines — one in the 1960s, one in the present — linked by a famous song. This sees a male Montreal DJ (Parent) and woman. And between a mother and her son with Down's syndrome.. Two people from two different eras who live two extraordinary moments of passion that shake their lives. Featured in the posters below we have Gaspé derived singer Kevin Parent who plays the lead in what will be the contemporary set portion of the film,...

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features about a half dozen projects that are moments away from lensing and that we feel are worth signaling out. This August, we've got a good grouping of titles that are positioning themselves for a Cannes release next May. On the indie front, any hopes of seeing Lee Daniels' Selma go into production appear to be dashed, financing woes might pull the plug on the production despite this being a perfect opportunity, especially in today's climate, to re-introduce a film which has racism in the forefront. We are awaiting confirmation on a filmmaker from our American New Wave 25 profiles to confirm a start date this month, but three established veteran indie filmmakers will be commencing production shortly: Rodrigo García is looking to direct Glenn Close's Albert Nobbs project, Mark Pellington's low budget I Melt With You will...
