Though I’m sure there are only approximately 2 people reading this who haven’t seen the original Mr Vampire, we have to set some context before we delve into Eureka’s two disc set of its sequels.
1985’s Mr Vampire (also on Blu-ray from Eureka) stars Lam Ching-Ying as a Taoist priest who, along with his students (Ricky Hui and Chin Siu-ho) has to fight off supernatural threats like a ghost that wants to seduce one of the students and the undead grandfather of Ting-Ting (Moon Lee), who they were supposed to rebury, but allowed to turn and escape. It’s great fun, narratively nonsense a lot of the time, but also somewhat rooted in real traditions and Chinese culture (the unique hopping vampires). For my money it earns its reputation as a classic, which brings us to this set.

This film has almost nothing to do with Mr Vampire.

Eureka Entertainment are set to release Hopping Mad: The Mr Vampire Sequels, four more vampire-hopping films featuring a bevy of Hong Kong legends. Presented as part of the Eureka Classics range in their UK debuts on Blu-ray from stunning new restorations.
After the huge success of Mr. Vampire, Hong Kong audiences were desperate for more vampire-hopping action and the films’ producers were more than happy to oblige. A steady stream of jiangshi content was produced over the following years, and presented here are 4 of these classic titles from stunning new restorations.
In Mr Vampire II (aka Vampire Family) an archaeologist and his students unwittingly set free a family of hopping vampires who wreak havoc in 1980s Hong Kong. Mr Vampire III returns to a period setting and sees Lam Ching-ying’s Taoist priest battle an evil witch (a brilliant performance by veteran actress Pauline Yuk-Wan Wong). Mr Vampire IV (aka...

In the midst of her Oscar campaign, and with a lot of people consequently discovering or rediscovering her earlier work, there’s not a whole lot left to say about Michelle Yeoh. However, Eureka’s perfectly timed releases of her early classics are definitely the best way to newly appreciate Yeoh, prior to the almost regal bearing she now brings to her projects.
Magnificent Warriors was the penultimate film of Yeoh’s short early run, before she took a break from the screen during her marriage to producer Dickson Poon, making a post-divorce comeback in Police Story 3. This early run is exceptional, also including starring roles in Yes Madam and its sequel Royal Warriors, but Magnificent Warriors may be the best of them, and one of her finest films full stop.

Featuring a number of iconic Hong Kong actors, including protagonist Michelle Yeoh, Sammo Hung, Michael Lam and Richard Ng, “The Stunt Woman” has a very interesting premise, of following the life of a female stunt woman, in an semi-biographical path considering that Yeoh also worked in that capacity, but in the end, fails as a whole. That Yeoh was injured seriously during a stunt involving jumping off a bridge probably was one of the reasons for this, since the production had to be rushed afterwards, but the main issue here seems to be the writing and the direction. Let us take things from the beginning though.

The gambling movie is something that seems to have become a genre of its own over the years in Hong Kong. From the Hui Brothers’ “Games Gamblers Play” to the numerous spin offs of Jing Wang’s 1989 classix “God of Gamblers”, nothing better represents Hk society’s aspiration for wealth. Indeed, “The Gambling Ghost” hedges its own bets by featuring three Sammo Hungs!
Fatty (Sammo Hung) is a failing gambler working as a valet, whilst continuing to disappoint his more straight laced father (Sammo Hung). An encounter with a car thief (Nina Li Chi) finds Fatty losing his job and one of his friends (of whom is captured by gangsters). His grandfather (Sammo Hung!) returns as a ghost to help, promising to make him wealthy if he takes revenge for his murder. Hijinks and flying fists ensue as the wayward Fatty finds himself unable to avoid a final confrontation.

Director Emily Ting is a groundbreaking female filmmaker. Her analysis of the prelude to love can recall that of Richard Linklater: ‘Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong’ could very well be the Asian adaptation of the trilogy ‘’Before Sunrise-Before Sunset-Before Midnight.’ In Ting’s spirited romance, Ruby, a Chinese American toy designer from Los Angeles, visits Hong Kong for the first time on business. *full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Juno Mak. Producers: Takashi Shimizu and Juno Mak. Cast: Chin Siu-ho, Nina Paw Hee-ching, Anthony Chan, Kara Wai, Richard Ng and Chung Fat. Rigor Mortis is a Chinese film from Hong Kong. The film was developed by filmmaker Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and inexperienced director Juno Mak. A true visual marvel, Rigor Mortis offers lots of horror elements. Though, the film's story is fractured by a number of sideplots. Still, Rigor Mortis offers lots of action in its short runtime. This film viewer enjoyed the many practical effects and Mak's experimentation with the camera. The story begins with a reluctant hero. Siu-ho (Siu-ho Chin) is a former actor and he has been kicked out of his home, by his wife. He chooses suicide as an escape from his pain, but a neighbour intervenes. Tung (Richard Ng...

Juno Mak's directorial debut Rigor Mortis is a lot of things. Some of it sticks and some of it doesn't. First and foremost though, Rigor Mortis is a love letter to 80s vampire classic Mr. Vampire. Starring original cast members Chin Siu Ho, Anthony Chan, Richard Ng, Billy Lau and Chung Fa, as well as veteran actors Paw Hee Ching and Kara Hui, Juno Mak is clearly not afraid to take chances. Japanese horror master Shimizu Takashi acts as producer, which probably explains why Rigor Mortis is an uneven blend of vampire folklore and Japanese-style ghost story. On a visual level it can't be faulted, with Juno Mak introducing himself to the filmmaking world in ballsy fashion. There is, after all, a very good reason why it was nominated for three 2013 Golden Horse awards, including Best New Director and Best Makeup & Costume Design. Action star Siu Ho (Chin Siu Ho...

Not too long ago we saw a rather impressive list of films announced for the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival 2013. With titles like Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and The Fifth Estate all set to appear, I simply cannot wait for September to arrive. With all the Oscar contenders flying around though, it’s easy to forget about some of the other films at the festival.
With that in mind, the Midnight Madness lineup has been announced today, showcasing some quality horror/thriller films that will serve as a break from the serious, weighty dramas that popular the majority of the festival lineup.
Amongst the highlights are the world premiere of Ei Roth’s The Green Inferno as well as the next film from Lucky McKee, All Cheerleaders Die.
Additionally, Tiff also revealed their documentary lineup today, which can be seen below along with the Midnight Madness films.

The Toronto International Film Festival celebrates 25 years of Midnight Madness with a murderers’ row of wild cinematic thrills. Programmed by Colin Geddes, the international lineup aims right for the jugular with everything from an extraterrestrial gore-thriller and sinister sex-comedy, to an Asian exotic horror film and a visually-stunning reinvention of the Italian cannibal genre.
“Since its 1988 launch, the Midnight Madness programme emerged as a touchstone of cinematic shock, satiating the adventurous palate of bloodthirsty cinephiles from all over the world,” said Geddes, International Programmer for the Festival. “When the witching hour strikes and the human brain starts slipping into dream mode, the Ryerson Theatre will once again serve up a feast of phantasmagorical characters and jaw-dropping scenes, playing host to bizarre biological monstrosities, ruthless dominatrix gangs, paranormal mirrors, and the hijinks of supernatural cheerleaders.”

Bodyguard: A New Beginning tells the story of Leung (Vincent Sze), the bodyguard of a Hong Kong Triad boss, Wong (Richard Ng), who is sent to the UK to protect a woman (Stephanie Langton) whose identity is known only by his boss. Even the boss’ own errant son, Yuen (Carl Ng), is kept in the dark. The efforts of a rival boss, Kai (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) to take over Wong’s territory leads Yuen to a betrayal that threatens to destroy all that his father has worked hard to protect.
