The Monkees‘ songs don’t get classified as punk rock. Despite this, The Monkees released a punk rock song long before the genre really took off in the 1970s. Here’s a look at how The Doors inspired this track.
1 of The Monkees’ songs was more punk rock that the alleged 1st punk rock song
The Monkees’ self-titled debut album established a sound for the band that straddled the lines between pop rock and country. The group got a tad heavier with their second album, More of the Monkees. The heaviest track of the album is “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone.” The song combines the bad attitude, uptempo riffs, and energy that defines punk rock.
And this came out in 1966. It was way before The Clash or the Sex Pistols. It came out a few months after what some consider to be the first punk rock song: Question Mark & the Mysterians’ “96 Tears.

The Doors and The Monkees were two of the bands that helped define classic rock from the 1960s. Despite this, The Doors’ Jim Morrison didn’t see The Monkees as his artistic peers. He once attacked the Prefab Four and another band that was popular around the same time. Surprisingly, The Monkees’ music was directly inspired by The Doors.
The Doors’ Jim Morrison attacked The Monkees and the 1st punk rock band
Sometimes, musical pioneers don’t get enough credit. For example, Question Mark & the Mysterians invented punk rock in 1966 with their hit “96 Tears.” Contrary to popular belief, several 1960s artists were producing punk rock songs, including The Beatles, The Doors, and The Monkees.
During an interview published by Vice in 2014, Bobby Balderrama of Question Mark & the Mysterians discussed something Morrison said. “One of the biggest disappointments I ever had was with The Doors,” he said. “I used to love The Doors,...

The Monkees and punk rock debuted in the same year: 1966. The two battled for chart supremacy. Interestingly, Jim Morrison of The Doors had a similar view of both.
1 of the masterminds behind the 1st punk rock song liked The Monkees a lot
Punk rock didn’t start with The Clash or the Sex Pistols. The genre began with a mid-tempo, sad song called “96 Tears” by a forgotten group called Question Mark & the Mysterians. It’s far from the hardest or most provocative punk rock song you will ever hear. “96 Tears” might sound a bit quaint in 2024, but for the time, it was groundbreaking.
During an interview published in Vice in 2014, Bobby Balderrama from Question Mark & the Mysterians recalled sharing the charts with the Prefab Four. “When ’96 Tears’ went to No. 1 nationally in the fall of 1966, we knocked The Monkees’ ‘Last Train to Clarksville’ out of the No. 1 spot,” he recalled.

As his recent work with Pearl Jam and the Rolling Stones suggests, mega-producer Andrew Watt really, really loves classic rock — and he’s clearly a little tired of being holed up in the studio. So Watt teamed up with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to form Smith and Watt Steakhouse, a ridiculously overqualified cover band that played for nearly three hours at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl on Sept. 18, with guest appearances by Jimmy Fallon, Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, the Roots’ Black Thought, guitarist Robert Randolph, and singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence,...

Even though The Doors was written off as a dud back in 1991, let’s get real, Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Jim Morrison was nothing short of mesmerizing. If that film had dropped today, Kilmer’s performance would’ve had Oscar gold practically falling from the sky.

He dove headfirst into the role of Morrison with such raw intensity and flair that it’s surprising the audience at the time didn’t give him more credit. Kilmer’s portrayal was a powerhouse performance that definitely deserves way more recognition than it received!

Kenichi Ugana’s “The Gesuidouz” is a delightful deadpan oddity about a Japanese punk group, whose 26-year-old lead singer Hanako (Natsuko) is convinced she’ll be dead at 27, the same age as Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. The quartet’s sardonic musical energy translates visually at every turn, with bright, subdued visual affectations that find humor in the morose.
The result is a fluffy, self-assured ode to creativity and finding one’s voice through genre cinema — the group’s songs and albums revolve around Hollywood horror films — with a particular viewer in mind. The film is, on one hand, undoubtedly Japanese in its sensibilities. Natsuko translates Hanako’s despondent mood into reflections and refractions on feeling trapped in her skin; she seldom strays from the character’s icy stillness, though she reveals a stunning sense of warmth on occasion. On the other hand, North American midnight movie fans who frequent...

It all started with Joaquin Phoenix’s dream.
Shortly before shooting wrapped on “Joker,” Phoenix confessed to Todd Phillips, the filmmaker who had reimagined Batman’s greatest enemy as an aspiring stand-up with a Travis Bickle complex, that he wasn’t ready to leave the character behind. When he fell asleep one night, Phoenix had a vision of Arthur Fleck, the man behind Joker’s clown makeup, performing onstage, telling jokes and singing.
“Todd was in the wings talking to me through a headset,” Phoenix remembers. “I woke up feeling elated and called him, hoping he’d want to do a show with me.”
Even before “Joker” went on to earn more than $1 billion in 2019, the pair were already thinking about a follow-up. They discussed the prospect of taking their act to Broadway, at least until reality set in.

Chicago – One month after John Lennon made his iconic walk across Abbey Road for that classic album cover, he got a call from Canadian promoter Johnny Brower. Would Lennon play at a Toronto rock show? The answer to that question is told in the recently released rock doc “REVIVAL69: The Concert That Rocked the World.”

Rating: 5.0/5.0
The Toronto Rock and Roll Revival (Aka Revival ’69) was held at Varsity Stadium on September 13th, 1969, and was filmed by famed rock documentarian D.A. Pennebaker. Johnny Brower was the young promoter, who had made a name for himself as The rock concert promoter/facilitator of that era for Canada. The planned concert revival “happening” – a bill of 1950s rockers like Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, even adding Jim Morrison and The Doors and a young Alice Cooper – failed to generate ticket sales.

Val Kilmer is widely recognized for his role as Batman in Joel Schumacher’s 1995 film, but according to the actor, his biographical film about the rock band The Doors and its frontman Jim Morrison was the role that challenged him as an artist.

I suppose the Doors. Jim was suicidal and when you spend over a year rehearsing inside someone’s skin who is so deeply unhappy… it’s tough.

Before Micah Nelson, before Nils Lofgren, and before Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, there was Danny Whitten. The original Crazy Horse guitarist died over 50 years ago, but the mark he made on Neil Young and the band persists to this day. Just watch this clip from the recent, now-suspended tour, where Nelson sings backup on “Cinnamon Girl.” Those harmonies — simultaneously honeyed and gravelly, providing just enough support without overshadowing, yet so powerful and full of potential — echoes Whitten. He’s the spirit of Crazy Horse that never really went away.

Amid a fertile alternative music scene in the U.K., spurred on by a flurry of new independent labels, bands like Echo & the Bunnymen had to work harder to stand out from the pack. The austere, post-punk minimalism of the group’s first three albums earned them critical acclaim and a cult following, but by 1984 their sound—Joy Division as fronted by Jim Morrison, if you will—was in need of retooling. Was there space for another scrappy, dour foursome alongside more established acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees, an ascendant U2, and unique sounds from the likes of Cocteau Twins and Depeche Mode?
Echo & the Bunnymen’s fourth album, Ocean Rain, would prove to be their shining moment. The quality of the songwriting ensures its status as a classic, separating it from both the band’s more uneven earlier works and their patchy, self-titled follow-up from 1987.

Fresh from Panic Fest 2024, The Ceremony is About to Begin unwraps itself like a meticulously preserved mummy, serving up a fresh twist on the horror mockumentary scene. Directed by Sean Nichols Lynch, this found footage film cleverly marries the allure of ancient Egyptian rituals with the chilling uncertainty of cult dynamics, all captured through a ‘documentary’ lens.

Mumbai, April 2 (Ians) Auteur Imtiaz Ali is one of the rare filmmakers who strikes a perfect balance between philosophy and entertainment in his stories.
While his earlier works like ‘Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Jab We Met’ were more on the entertaining side, films like ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009), ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Tamasha’ have aged like a fine wine and have cultivated a new fan base which craves for deeper meaning to a story as much as the entertainment.
The filmmaker is now gearing up for his ninth film, the biopic based on the highest selling Punjabi musician of all times, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.
“There are a lot of ‘9’ happening,” Imtiaz told Ians as he seems in a quirky mood.
“Nine is my favourite number, A.R. Rahman (his music composer) also loves nine, he has made ’99 Songs’ and ‘Chamkila’ is my ninth film”.

It is not coincidental that Netflix is releasing the Diljit Dosanjh-Parineeti Chopra-starrer ‘Chamkila’ a day after Sidhu Moose Wala’s death anniversary, for the subject of the biopic, singing sensation Amarjit Singh Chamkila, was as controversial in his lifetime as Moose Wala and he too was shot dead, but the case remains unsolved till today.
At the time of his assassination, along with his wife Amarjot and two of their band members, on March 8, 1988, the man Amit Trivedi described as the “Elvis of Punjab”, was 27 years old, at the peak of his career, and in so much demand that he was said to have been booked for “366 days in a year”.
Moose Wala was 29 when he was killed on May 29, 2022, allegedly on orders from Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar’s associate, Lawrence Bishnoi. If Moose Wala was controversial in his lifetime for his espousal of a gun culture – the same gun...

SXSW 2024 is in full swing, complete with a new next-to-impossible ticket. The Black Keys continued the promo run they began Thursday afternoon with a keynote Q&a with Rolling Stone‘s Angie Martoccio by heading to Mohawk, a downtown club whose capacity is just a shade smaller than the arenas and festival stages they normally play. Accordingly, many fans got turned away at the door when the fire-code capacity for the Keys’ set of blues covers was reached, well before their midnight start time. But there were tons of other...

For 15 minutes or so, Bob Marley: One Love promises to be an antidote to the usual cookie-cutter music biopic, the kind skewered by the 2007 spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Riffing back then on 2005’s Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as troubled country star Johnny Cash, Jake Kasdan’s film took aim at the whole jukebox-movie industry, featuring a solemn lead character who “has to think about his entire life before he goes on stage.”
Spoiler alert: this kind of thing also happens in One Love. But Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film promises so much more, things like real-world politics, emotional complexity, and serious danger. In other words, an alternative to the usual narrative of the greenhorn who dreams big, lives that dream, and then gets sucker-punched by The Man. Gradually, though, the realization dawns that we’re being sold a pup. As Led Zeppelin might say,...

From the moment it arrived from England last year, the Last Dinner Party’s “Nothing Matters” was the kind of rock (or “rock”) record that didn’t seem to exist anymore. A beautifully sneaky single, the band’s ode to an illicit encounter opens like the sound of Abba with a hangover. Then the sweetness falls off, the music starts hammering, and singer Abigail Morris gets to the point: “And you can hold me like he held her/And I will fuck you like nothing matters.” Throw in a screechy...

Ask Bill Wyman what people should expect from The Stones and Brian Jones, documentarian Nick Broomfield’s new film about the late, doomed founder of the band, and he’s pretty straightforward about it: “The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but!”
That may be a slight exaggeration, but there’s no denying that the documentary, for which the former Rolling Stones bass player was a “historical consultant,” delves into the highs (laterally and figuratively) and lows of the man who started the Stones but never lived past the Sixties.

The Rolling Stones have existed for six decades, yet the women who influenced the members and their music have been largely overlooked and under-appreciated. But with her new book Parachute Women: Marianne Faithfull, Marsha Hunt, Bianca Jagger, Anita Pallenberg, and the Women Behind the Rolling Stones, Elizabeth Winder is attempting to change that. In an excerpt below, Winder details the moment Anita Pallenberg’s path crossed with the band — and how she transformed them from “schoolboys” to stars.

Saturday Night Live has become renowned for its iconic sketches, many of which have gone down in TV history as legendary. Part of what makes the NBC sketch comedy series so special, is the unpredictable nature of the live show. From cast members breaking character to surprise celebrity cameos, some of SNL’s most iconic moments have come from improvised performances. Recently, Jimmy Fallon appeared on Andy Cohen’s podcast and shared an hilarious story about a sketch he performed on the show with no rehearsal and no script.
Jimmy Fallon was an ‘SNL’ cast member for six years
According to IMDb, Fallon’s breakthrough as a performer came during his six-year tenure on Saturday Night Live from 1998 to 2004. Looks like television viewers still enjoy a clip show?
On Monday, MTV announced that ratings for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards saw a significant increase in viewership, both overall and in the key 18-49 demo, compared to the 2022 event.
A total of 2 million people watched the event on its various platforms, a 23% increase over the 1.6 million who checked it out last year. 1.45 million of those viewers were in the demo, a 14% uptick compared to last year’s 1.27 million. And ratings via simulcast went up 3% year over year.
And in case you’re wondering about less meaningful statistics, MTV says these viewers “consumed” a combined 521 million minutes, which is a 5% increase over last year’s 498 million.
There was even an 80% increase in the amount of individual votes for the various awards, to 77.7 million.
These viewership wins come despite the fact that the 2023 awards show was in effect nothing more than a clips episode.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards were forced to morph into what largely amounted to a clip show on Sunday as host Drew Barrymore had pulled out in solidarity with the WGA, and MTV scuttled plans for red carpet interviews and an in-person ceremony in order to to avoid run-ins with picketers (and lack of talent willing to show up).
The show that aired was largely made up of clips of memorable moments from past MTV Movie Awards ceremonies — everything from Jim Carrey accepting his award as Jim Morrison to Sacha Baron Cohen landing crotch-first into Eminem’s face after a “stunt gone wrong.” They even played Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s performance of “California Girl” from the 2010 show in full, just to fill some time.

If there was ever an actor worthy of the distinction of "America's Sweetheart," it's Meg Ryan, who has been appearing in films since 1981. Effortlessly charming and with an often easygoing magnetism whenever she's on-screen, Ryan channels her natural talents effectively in romantic comedies and family-friendly fare. However, Ryan also possesses a much wider range than many give her credit for, delivering solid work in military dramas and character studies while occasionally branching out into hard science-fiction and fantasy.
Despite performing in dozens of film roles over the past 40-plus years, Ryan is one of her generation's more underrated actors. In fact, though millions of moviegoers adore her and her work, Ryan has yet to earn an Academy Award nomination of any kind. Rock’n’roll musicians have a habit of thinking of themselves like secular gods, but the truth is they’re not infallible. No matter how successful a band may or may not have been in the past, there’s never any guarantee their next record will live up to the heights they’ve previously scaled. Sometimes, everything that once went right just all goes wrong.
There are often extenuating circumstances, of course. Band members may leave due to death, drugs or just good old-fashioned “musical differences”, or an ambitious new direction may turn out to be more like a swerve into oncoming traffic.
Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

Musicians build their reputations on their art, which means that they can sometimes get away with rude behavior, outlandish styles, and, in the case of these three artists, smelling bad. Here are three talented musicians who have caused people to complain about their odor.

Bob Dylan’s longtime road manager Victor Maymudes dealt with a lot while working with the musician. When their working relationship crumbled, Maymudes aired some of his grievances about Dylan. These included rude behavior, like blowing cigarette smoke in people’s faces or refusing to answer questions. He also had problems with Dylan’s hygiene.
“He doesn’t take his clothes off when he goes to sleep and the guy doesn’t clean his teeth,” Maymudes said, per the book Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan by Howard Sounes. “He’ll smell like a f***ing hog.
