Graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1955. Afterwards, moved to New York and studied acting under Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler at the Actor's Studio.

Appeared in many New York-based daytime soaps including "Somerset," "Another World" and "Ryan's Hope".

Raised in Arlington Virginia, where he began appearing on the local stage.

Studied at the Actors Studio in New York after graduating from college. He won an Obie Award for his role in "The Marriage of Bette and Boo" in 1985.

First acted on stage as a youngster with Bailey's Crossroads Theater in Arlington, Virginia. After his family moved to Toledo in 1947, he appeared in several productions of the Toledo Repertoire Theater, including "Life with Father".
