Japanese actor and singer Anna Sawai has become the first Asian woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her role in Shōgun. The historical drama had a record win for a single season of 18 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada.
Sawai’s performance as Lady Mariko has been appreciated ever since the FX/Hulu series came out. Apart from the Emmy win, Sawai seemed to have another win when actress Kathy Bates appreciated her performance on the red carpet for the Emmys. The Japanese star got teary-eyed and thanked the legendary Misery actress for her compliments.

The Matrix universe is expanding with a new movie helmed by Drew Goddard.
The writer and director, best known for his work on titles like The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Netflix’s Daredevil series, will both direct the film and pen its screenplay. Goddard has plenty of experience with sci-fi, having gotten his start penning episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Lost.
Currently untitled, the project will be the first Matrix film to not directly involve creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though the former will serve as executive producer. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but it sounds like Goddard has a strong vision to extend the franchise.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and...

Edgar Allan Poe may have enjoyed some amount of popularity during his lifetime, but he certainly could not have predicted just how influential his writing would become in the ensuing years. Even over two centuries later, we’re still seeing reverential homages to his work in modern media, and that’s not even including the immeasurable impact the author had on the horror genre as a whole.
And with Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher reinventing the author’s stories for the streaming generation, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Poe adaptations to watch after binging Netflix’s horrific treat. After all, there’s something for everyone when it comes to reinventions of Edgar’s tales of mystery and imagination.

Lionsgate is doing some damage control today following rumors that have been spreading online that Eli Roth has been fired for the much-anticipated Borderlands movie adaptation, with Tim Miller replacing him. According to Deadline, Miller is stepping in as the director of Borderlands‘ upcoming two weeks of reshoots, but Roth has not been fired. Instead, they’re saying Roth is busy prepping to shoot his long-awaited holiday slasher, Thanksgiving, based on his infamous Grindhouse trailer. That film is gearing up for a March shoot which, theoretically, can’t be delayed if they want to get the movie out for a Thanksgiving debut.
Deadline notes that the baton handing is friendly, with Roth and Miller friends, and that Roth is still officially the movie’s director. Notably, the film, which stars Cate Blanchett as the heroine Lilith, was shot before this year’s Tar. Indeed, I actually saw some footage of...

Motion pictures, for better or worse, shape the way that we view history. They bring the past to life using realistic costumes, production design, and visual effects. They tell vivid stories about real-life figures and important events that shaped the world around us to this day, and which provide meaningful parallels to the lives we currently lead.
And yet, if the movies have taught us anything, it's that every single historical figure, at some point in their storied life, has also solved at least one murder mystery. Or at least they fought a mummy or something. The desire to tell tales of historical fiction is perfectly understandable, but our collective and very specific urge to transform biographies into pulpy fan fiction is a little weird, if you think about it.
Consider, if you will, Scott Cooper's "The Pale Blue Eye," which co-stars Harry Melling as a young Edgar Allan Poe,...

It was fascinating to see my good colleague Valerie Complex describe, in her review of the Antoine Fuqua/Will Smith slavery drama Emancipation, having almost walked out of the film, not because it was unworthy, but because she found the depiction of Black suffering and death almost too much to watch.
In the end, Complex stuck with it. But her review ended with perhaps the most moving plea I’ve ever seen from a critic. “There has to be another way to tell these stories,” she wrote. “There has to be another way.”
Wow.
Sometimes, if you take movies seriously enough, you actually have to look away. Even the good ones—especially the good ones, perhaps—can be too intense, or too direct, or too emotionally unsettling for a thoughtful viewer.
So, very occasionally, you have to walk out. Many, I know, regard this as a crime against cinema. Every movie,...

Remember, remember the 5th of November. While V for Vendetta missed Guy Fawkes night by a few months, the 2005 film is widely considered one of the best DC comics adaptations ever. A big-screen version of the graphic novel by Alan Moore & David Lloyd, it took enough liberties with the plot that Moore himself criticized the film, but nevertheless, it struck a chord with both critics and audiences. It was a rare financial hit for the Wachowskis, who struggled in the years following the Matrix trilogy to craft a follow-up that would be widely embraced. For this one, they opted to write and produce the film only, with their protege James McTeigue taking over as director. The high-profile cast included Natalie Portman as the heroine, Evie Hammond, with Hugo Weaving playing V, the masked antihero who’s a terrorist to some and a hero to others.

With “The Batman” upon us, Netflix is responding in due course with a wave of big-budget tentpoles hitting the platform this March. Picking just the seven of the best this month meant leaving off a few — Christopher Nolan’s time-bending World War II epic “Dunkirk” is an honorable mention, as is James McTeigue’s dystopian future vision “V for Vendetta.”
For those who prefer less explosive and CGI-driven spectacle, Jane Campion’s lyrical John Keats and Fanny Brawne romance “Bright Star” arrives on the platform March 31 — right on the heels of the filmmaker’s in-the-bag Best Director win for “The Power of the Dog” at the Oscars March 27.
If you’re in a classic throwback mood, you can’t go wrong with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in “Top Gun,” especially as the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” is finally set to arrive in theaters… when exactly? It’s slated for...

Village Roadshow sued Warner Bros. on February 7 over the HBO Max streaming release of “The Matrix Resurrections.”
Village Roadshow alleged that Warner Bros. undercut the theatrical release of the fourth “Matrix” film by driving subscribers to HBO Max.
Per Variety, “the suit alleges that Warner Bros. unilaterally decided to release the latest ‘Matrix’ installment simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, with no notice to Village Roadshow.”
The production company has a history of co-financing with the Warner Bros. studio across the “Matrix” trilogy as a whole, “Joker,” and the “Oceans” film series.
“The Matrix Resurrections” grossed approximately $148 million at the box office to date. Variety reported that the lawsuit “accuses Warner Bros. of deliberately harming the film’s box office to prop up HBO Max, at the expense of the future viability of the franchise.”

Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “The Matrix Resurrections.”
After Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) triumphantly leap from a building (a stunt the actors actually performed) and fly off into the horizon at the end of “The Matrix Resurrections,” you wouldn’t be wrong to start speculating about a sequel. And with studio IP recycling at lightspeed rates these days, another entry in the Wachowskis’ cyber-punk franchise might seem like an inevitability.
Not so fast. In a recent interview with Collider, producer James McTeigue revealed that, for now, the “Matrix” team (which included director Lana flying solo this time without her sister Lilly) has no plans to develop further movies.
“Look, for us, I think, at the moment, it’s just the movie you’ve seen. We’ve got no prequel in mind. We’ve got no sequel in mind. We’ve got no further trilogy,...

Ever since it debuted in theaters in on HBO Max December 22, “The Matrix Resurrections” has been garnering praise from critics and fans alike for its meta take on the “Matrix” trilogy. But in a new interview with Collider, producer (and first assistant director on the first three films) James McTeigue reveals that one scene in particular was even more meta than audiences knew. Light spoilers below!
In “The Matrix Resurrections,” Neo (Keanu Reeves) believes himself to be a video game designer responsible for a popular trilogy series called Matrix. Then he hears this very inside baseball statement from his boss, Jonathan Groff’s Smith: “Things have changed, the market’s tough. If you’ve watched The Matrix Resurrections, you might remember a scene where the character Smith (played by Jonathan Groff) takes a jab at Warner Bros possibly leaving Lana and Lilly Wachowski (the originators of The Matrix franchise) behind to direct another Matrix film. Well, turns out that’s not just hyperbole.
In a recent interview with Collider, Resurrections producer James McTeigue admits that WB had plans to assign a different director. McTeigue has worked on all the Matrix films and stated that the “money making capability” of a fourth Matrix film meant there was “always talk.” However, when Lana Wachowski jumped at the chance to direct, the studio quickly said yes, it just made sense to have the original director on board.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled a new poster for The Matrix Resurrections via its official Twitter account.
“Step back into the Matrix with this new poster for The Matrix Resurrections,” read the photo caption. “Watch it in theaters and on HBO Max* this Christmas. #TheMatrix.”
Resurrections is the fourth film in the iconic sci-fi franchise which comes 18 years after the release of the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and 22 years after its launch with The Matrix.
It’s set 20 years after the events of Revolutions, and finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) living a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco, where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. Neither he nor Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) recognize each other. Subsequently, however, Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.
“Step back into the Matrix with this new poster for The Matrix Resurrections,” read the photo caption. “Watch it in theaters and on HBO Max* this Christmas. #TheMatrix.”

Given that November 5th is integral to the plot and the movie has retained a loyal cult following for over a decade now, it isn’t a surprise that V for Vendetta tends to find itself trending on an annual basis right around this time of the year, with fans remarking that 2020 in particular has made the themes at the center of the narrative more timely and prescient than ever.
The dystopian graphic novel adaptation marked the first big screen project for the Wachowski siblings after the conclusion of The Matrix trilogy, with the duo producing alongside Joel Silver and also writing the script. Their protege James McTeigue, who was the first assistant director on Reloaded and Revolutions, stepped up to make his feature-length debut on the R-rated effort and V for Vendetta turned out to be a decent-sized hit if not exactly a blockbuster, raking in over $130 million at the box office.

Remember, remember the 5th of November, the gunpowder, treason and plot. But also remember V for Vendetta, which should also never be forgot.
This November 5th, the iconic DC/Vertigo Comics title has been trending on Twitter as fans around the world are rewatching the movie (or maybe even re-reading the original Alan Moore comic) to mark the occasion. And many are feeling that this year it’s even more relevant than ever.
In case you’re not familiar with it, V for Vendetta stars Hugo Weaving as V, a mysterious mask-wearing vigilante operating in a dystopian near-future Britain who wages a one-man war on the country’s brutal, fascistic government in honor of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament on November 5th hundreds of years ago. Natalie Portman co-stars as Evey Hammond, the ordinary woman who becomes V’s protégé in freedom fighting.

One of the best R-rated comic book movies hits Netflix next month. 2005’s V for Vendetta can sometimes be overlooked as it’s not part of a modern superhero shared universe, and it doesn’t have as much of a vocal fanbase as fellow Alan Moore adaptation Watchmen, but it’s one of the best entries for mature audiences in the genre and, from midway through next month, you’ll be able to catch it on the aforementioned platform.
V for Vendetta – based on a comic published in 1988 – has been passed around between the different streaming services all year, but on November 15th it returns to Netflix. Unfortunately, it arrives too late for users to watch it on the most appropriate day – November 5th – but those who subscribe to HBO Max, its current home, will be able to do so instead.

“The Matrix” co-director Lilly Wachowski went viral on social media in May after she slammed Ivanka Trump and Elon Musk for using the red pills at the center of her 1999 science-fiction movie to show support for Donald Trump and the Republican party. It was hardly the first time such a connection has been made, as Trump supporters and alt-right groups have been coopting “The Matrix” for several years now. In a new interview with The Daily Beast, “Matrix” actor Hugo Weaving says right wingers who are using “The Matrix” to express support for their political agenda have no idea what “The Matrix” truly represents.
“I am befuddled by it,” Weaving said. “It just goes to show how people don’t read below surfaces. They don’t read between the lines. They will take something that they think is cool and they will repurpose it to fit themselves when the original...

The line between miracles and madness is a thin one in the first trailer for Netflix's new geopolitical thriller. Led by Pixels actress Michelle Monaghan, Messiah follows CIA agent Eva Geller as she encounters a mysterious figure (Mehdi Dehbi) who quickly gains global attention for his "miracles." While his cult-like followers see his godly actions as the work of a higher figure, Geller sees them as acts of public disruption and discovers that this Messiah may really be a sinister con artist with plans to dismantle the global balance of power.
But Geller is up against more than the Messiah's zen-like presence, razor-sharp cheekbones, and flowing locks; the mysterious stranger quickly converts people to his cause with several incredible acts, including allegedly saving a young woman (Stefania Lavie Owen) from a violent tornado. As Geller searches for the truth behind the stranger's intentions, the tangled web of lies and...

ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.
The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).
The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

Beau Bridges and Philip Baker Hall are set to recur on Messiah, the upcoming drama series from executive producers Michael Petroni, Mark Burnett, Roma Downey, James McTeigue and Andrew Deane.
Created by Michael Petroni (The Book Thief), Messiah is described as a 21st century political thriller that chronicles the world’s reaction to a man, Al-Masih (Dehbi), who emerges from the Middle East claiming he is sent from God and creates a groundswell of followers.
