Why You Should Watch Season One
The first season of Dynasty was a much more down-to-earth show than the jewelry, fur, big shoulder pads, bigger hair, and camp-fest it eventually became. Krystal (Linda Evans) was but a humble secretary who felt out of place in her new husband Blake’s (John Forsythe) mansion. The servants, including snooty Joseph (Lee Bergere), made it clear that, no, she wasn’t imagining things; she really didn’t.

Though Gabriel Basso is now well-known for his leading role in The Night Agent, the actor appeared in a number of other awesome movies and TV shows before his big Netflix hit. In 2023, Basso became the face of the political thriller, The Night Agent. The series tells the story of FBI agent Peter Sutherland, who, after answering a mysterious phone call, is pulled into a complex and dangerous political conspiracy. Notably, The Night Agent made Netflix history by becoming the third-most-viewed debuting series on Netflix. Nowadays, it remains as the sixth-most-watched Netflix series ever.
Basso's acting career began long before the premiere of The Night Agent. Basso discovered acting at a fairly young age, and quickly earned minor roles in movies like Meet Bill and Alice Upside Down. Slowly but surely, he took on bigger and more important roles, and collaborated with massive Hollywood stars like Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks,...

Hillbilly Elegy rises to the Netflix Top 10 for the week of July 15 to July 21. The film was extremely controversial when it was first released. The original book's author, J.D. Vance, was recently selected as Donald Trump's running mate for the 2024 election.
The 2020 movie Hillbilly Elegy makes its way onto the Netflix Global Top 10 several years after its release. Based on J.D. Vance's bestselling 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, the movie follows the story of Vance's character as he receives a phone call that pulls him back to his Ohio hometown, where three generations of his family live. Hillbilly Elegy was directed by Ron Howard and features a leading cast including Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Frida Pinto, and Bo Hopkins.

Hillbilly Elegy features a star-studded cast including Amy Adams and Glenn Close. The main actors in Hillbilly Elegy have all been in many great projects over the years; The cast of Hillbilly Elegy has plenty of other movies that received much better reviews than the 2020 film.
Ron Howard's film Hillbilly Elegy has faced some controversy since its release in 2020, but its star-studded cast remains notable, and their other movies are certainly worth the watch. Hillbilly Elegy follows the true story of J.D. Vance's Appalachian childhood, alongside his wise grandmother and his addicted mother. Though the film's message has been brought into question, the cast led by Amy Adams and Glenn Close has been singled out as one of the film's undoubted strong suits.
Hillbilly Elegy's cast includes many big stars and relative newcomers. Amy Adams and Glenn Close are the most familiar faces, and therefore, take on the most pivotal roles.

Changes in the film adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy aimed at cinematic structure did not save it from negative reviews. The film, though mostly true to the characters in J.D. Vance's memoir, featured embellished plot points for dramatic effect. Variations between the real story and the film, especially in J.D.'s timeline and his family's struggles, are notable but highlight the conflict in the source material.
Part of every writer's job when adapting stories to the big screen is to make changes that would make for a better movie, and Ron Howard's 2020 adaptation of J.D. Vance's memoir Hillbilly Elegy is no exception to those sorts of changes. While the vibrant Appalachian characters that comprise J.D.'s family maintain their essence in many ways, Howard re-ordered and embellished certain plot points to affix a more appropriate cinematic structure to the story. Although these changes certainly failed to rescue Hillbilly Elegy from dismal reviews,...

After Donald Trump’s announcement of J.D. Vance as his running mate on Monday, viewership of “Hillbilly Elegy” increased by 1,179% compared to the day before, per Luminate.
The 2020 Netflix film, based on Vance’s 2016 memoir of the same name, was watched for 19.2 million minutes on Monday — a huge leap from the 1.5 million minutes the film was watched on Sunday, by which point Vance’s VP bid was already a sweeping rumor.
Monday’s total comes out to an estimated 163,836 views. This is calculated by dividing the number of minutes watched by the film’s 117-minute runtime, which means, for example, that watching half of the movie would constitute half of a view, etc.
Upon its release in 2016, Vance’s memoir was widely discussed as giving context for why working class white voters may have been attracted to Trump. The film debuted on Netflix in November 2020 after a limited theatrical run and received negative reviews.

"Hillbilly Elegy" faced criticism for generalizing Appalachia and the working class. Many viewers questioned the accuracy and portrayal of the characters in the film. The controversy surrounding the movie stemmed from its perceived exploitation of the culture it depicts.
Netflix released Hillbilly Elegy in November 2020, and critics and audiences immediately began sharing their concerns with the story and portrayal of some subjects, resulting in controversy that overshadowed everything else the movie had to offer. Adapted from Nathanael West’s scabrously funny 1939 novel, The Day of the Locust reunites the creative triumvirate of producer Jerome Hellman, director John Schlesinger, and screenwriter Waldo Salt, who had previously teamed up for Midnight Cowboy. Superficially, the two films would seem to be quite different. One is a contemporary tale shot documentary-style on the mean streets of late-’60s New York. The other is an exquisitely detailed period piece filmed largely on Paramount soundstages in L.A. Midnight Cowboy favors gritty realism, while The Day of the Locust descends into a kind of deranged surrealism. But the films are linked since they both focus on loners and outcasts, salaciously prod the seedy underbelly of their milieus, and expose the unforgiving flipside of the American Dream.
The biggest difference between the two films is that Midnight Cowboy mitigates its ultimately tragic denouement with a certain tenderness between its damaged protagonists.

Every year the “In Memoriam” tribute at the Oscars leaves off a few fan favorites and 2023 was no exception: Among those who weren’t included in Sunday night’s video montage were Anne Heche, “Saving Private Ryan” star Tom Sizemore and Charlbi Dean, who appeared in this year’s Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness.”
Fans also noted the absence of Cindy Williams: While she was best known for the ’70s TV sitcom “Laverne & Shirley,” she notably appeared in two classic films of the era, George Lucas’ “American Graffiti” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation.”
And while the tribute included “Goodfellas” star Ray Liotta, who died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022, his costar Paul Sorvino, who died in July 2022, was left out.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Character actor who specialised in a combination of good ol’ boy affability and latent violence
Bo Hopkins, who has died aged 84, established his credentials as a character actor early in his film career. But he was already 31 when, in The Wild Bunch (1969), his third film role, he played Crazy Lee, left behind by the gang with their hostages as they escape an ambush. His glee as he marches the terrified captives around at gunpoint singing We Shall Gather at the River highlighted the violent absurdity of the director Sam Peckinpah’s opening scene. In American Graffiti (1973), directed by George Lucas, he played the leader of a greaser gang, the Pharoahs, who frightens Richard Dreyfuss’s strait-laced Curt into pulling off a spectacular prank on the police. His reward, Hopkins tells him with a wily grin, will be membership of the Pharoahs, complete with “car coat and blood initiation”.

Prior to the advent of the so-called “eco-vengeance” genre, Italian cinema used animals, or at least the symbolism they naturally encapsulate, in the most disparate contexts, from those coherent with their nature to more unusual and weird derivations. With regard to the singular use of animals in Italian cinema, a reference is certainly owed to Dario Argento’s first films—L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo, Il gatto a nove code, and Quattro mosche di velluto grigio—which were followed by huge commercial success that encapsulated what Argento had learnt from Alfred Hitchcock and the Nouvelle Vague, as well as from the literary heritage of Raymond Chandler, where animals appeared in the titles embodying the characters’ gestures, modus operandi, and personalities—the animal as a metaphor representing the diabolical “human” nature. Although the presence of animals in the titles is often justified, of course, by some narrative solution or gimmick,...

John Schlesinger’s adaptation of Nathanael West’s novel is one of the best ‘Hollywood on Hollywood’ pictures ever, even if it soaks everything about The Golden Age of Tinseltown in an acid bath of cynicism. The perverse dystopia of dreams and vice is beautifully rendered in every respect, and culminates in a finale that caught ordinary audiences by surprise. Is this an indictment of the shallow aims of America’s Fantasyland, or one misanthrope’s vision of self-loathing and apocalyptic wish fulfillment? Don’t look for anyone to root for, as even the benign characters are moral freaks. Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Donald Sutherland and William Atherton give utterly original performances; [Imprint] has a secured a great new interview extra with Atherton.

When J.D. Vance’s memoir hit shelves in 2016, it became a surprise bestseller, a controversy magnet, and an impromptu state-of-the-nation address — the must-read if you wanted insight into why Donald Trump was able to harness rage and frustration of the white underclass into a single presidential win. A tale of Down South struggle and upward-mobility ambition, it regaled readers with one man’s roots in the backwoods of Kentucky, his family’s migration to Rust Belt Ohio, and his hardscrabble journey through an Ivy League institution’s hallowed halls. Adapted by Oscar nominee Vanessa Taylor (“The Shape of Water”) from J.D. Vance’s bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy” is exactly the sort of mainstream heart-tugger that many moviegoers and Oscar voters embrace. Ron Howard knows what he is doing. He’s been to the Oscar party many times, from “Apollo 13” to “Frost/Nixon” and “A Beautiful Mind,” which all featured actors in top form.
Howard’s stock-in-trade studio drama is harder to come by these days. Always a canny Hollywood player (with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer), Howard pivoted over the past decade to more indie-minded projects such as “Rush” and documentaries like “Rebuilding Paradise.”
Netflix backed “Hillbilly Elegy,” a resonant family story that will likely lure far more viewers than the movie might have generated in theaters, Covid or no. In fact, it’s likely that no studio would have backed this, even with two of the great...

Based on a memoir by former Marine and Yale Law student J.D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of Vance’s family, a sprawling clan who live in southern Ohio and also have deep roots in Kentucky. The movie focuses on both Vance’s childhood and his formative years as an adult, with the emphasis on the impact of two women on his life: his troubled, drug-addicted mother Bev (Amy Adams) and his stern, no-nonsense, foul-mouthed grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close).
Directed by Ron Howard, the film is clearly meant to be empathetic to these Appalachian folks even as it studiously avoids any hint of the divisive politics that have set blue states and red states apart for decades. But that evasion robs the movie of any context or wider background commentary. Perhaps this is done as a way to make it more palatable to general audiences, but it nevertheless giving...

"Be happy. I know I could've done better... But you, you gotta decide – you want to be somebody... or not?" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for Hillbilly Elegy, a new film directed by Ron Howard. A Yale law student drawn back to his hometown grapples with family history, Appalachian values, and the American dream. Hillbilly Elegy is a "powerful personal memoir" that provides a window into one family's personal journey of survival and triumph. By following three colorful generations through their own unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience. Based on J.D. Vance's bestselling book about his own life growing in Appalachia. Starring Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins, and Owen Asztalos. This looks like stereotypical Oscar-bait filmmaking, but the best part is the speech in the middle of this trailer about Terminators.

Vance’s 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.” The rest of the cast features Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins, and Owen Asztalos. David Fincher’s Mank isn’t the only high-profile film arriving on Netflix this fall. A few weeks prior, timed with Thanksgiving, Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy will arrive on the streaming platform. Starring Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins, and Owen Asztalos, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of the fall release. Based on J.D. Vance’s #1 New York Times Bestseller, the story follows three generations of a family.
“It’s a story of transformation and while it focuses on that culture, a group of people that I really really relate to given my own family background and history, and my wife’s as well,” Howard told Collider. “It really is about being your best self, finding strength in your heritage, and the lessons that you learn, but also recognizing the hurdles that some of that might represent as well, and learning how to grow beyond it.

Predicting the Best Picture winner is often the toughest among the 24 categories at the Oscars. We learned this at the 2020 Academy Awards. We were certain the top prize would go to “1917” but it was “Parasite” that prevailed. When making our Best Picture Oscar predictions, we weigh many factors, the most important of which is the effect of the preferential ballot that is used only for this race (voters rank all the nominees with the winner being the one that is the consensus choice.)
We also take into account the pedigree of the filmmakers, the critical reception to their previous films, the box office tally and the track record of the studios. We’ve taken all of these into consideration again as we look ahead to the 2021 Academy Awards. (Scroll down for the 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Picture.)

From the ‘70s on calendar horror was all the rage with the slasher crowd; Black Christmas begat Halloween which gave us Friday the 13th and on and on, a red ‘X’ flooding the dates throughout the year. Of course we can’t forget birthdays either, so after Happy Birthday to Me we were offered Sweet Sixteen (1983), an interesting, sometimes icky film that leans closer to murder mystery than it does slasher.
Released in mid September by Century International, Sweet Sixteen got lost amid the masked mutilators and supernatural shenanigans of the day, but that shouldn’t deter any ardent fan of the era and those seeking a horror film grounded in story more than exploitation – depending on how it’s viewed.
The story of Sweet Sixteen has an air of Choose Your Own Adventure about it depending on which version you watch – the theatrical cut or the director’s cut.
