Politics can be scary, and today is Election Day. Directed by David Cronenberg, this adaptation stars Christopher Walken as John Smith, a young school teacher who slips into a coma for five years due to a car accident. When he comes to, he finds his lady love has moved on and has a new psychic ability that gives him insight into anyone he touches.

That location disappointed many attendees due to its cramped layout, prompting AFM to reassess what venue would best serve its future. Organizers’ answer: To pack up and head to Vegas.

Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Glen Powell took on bad guys and tornados this year, but that’s nothing compared to the threat of an ass-kicking from 94-year-old June Squibb. Earlier this year Squibb starred in “Thelma,” her first lead role in a film, playing a grandmother who tracks down her swindlers. While promoting the film, the dumpling-faced Oscar nominee posted short videos in which she warned other action stars: “I can kick your ass!”

The question is – did she get any responses from her targets? Squibb laughs good-naturedly. “I don’t think we did, but we got a lot of laughs,” she admits. She also cites a clip she saw of Austin Butler and his costars from “The Bikeriders” watching her video, noting: “They all laughed about it.”

Hollywood figures are making a final push in the 2024 presidential election campaign, while Kamala Harris and Donald Trump plan to fill their final rallies this evening with some celebrity guests.

A massive phone bank, being billed as the “largest phone bank ever,” is being organized for Harris on Tuesday by Jamie Patricof and Rep. Eric Swalwell. Although Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film "The Shining" is frequently cited as one of the scariest films of all time, it's widely known that Stephen King — who wrote the 1977 novel on which it's based — hates it. Kubrick famously altered several details of King's book, and the author felt that the changes were arbitrary at best and insulting at worst. King wrote his story as the tale of an ordinary man who was gradually driven to madness. King expressed interest in gentler actors like Martin Sheen or Michael Moriarty for the role of Jack Torrance, feeling they would be sympathetic immediately. Kubrick, however, cast Jack Nicholson in the role, and King felt that Nicholson was already unstable from the jump. Though it’s something of a backhanded paean to its eponymous city in question, the most enjoyable element to “Lost & Found in Cleveland” is its locations, locations, locations — cinematographer Davon Slininger’s widescreen images provide an appealing selective tour of a burg the film presents as quaintly lagging well behind the times. Otherwise, this slick if uninspired first feature for actors turned writer-directors Marisa Guterman and Keith Gerchak offers a pleasant-enough ensemble seriocomedy that straddles the terrains of Richard Curtis and Christopher Guest, without approaching either’s high points. The Newport Beach Fest world premiere’s familiar faces and story beats seem best suited to home viewing.

Peter E. Strauss, a producer behind recent films like The Jacket and Air who served as an executive at Lionsgate, Mandalay Pictures, Img and Allied Artists, has died. He was 83.

Strauss died on Oct. 6 at his home in Beverly Hills. At his side were his wife of 46 years, Susan, and his son, Jonathan.

Strauss most recently served as executive vice president at Mandalay for 25 years. He well-known for his work in expanding independent cinema, pioneering foreign sales and off-balance-sheet financing for independent films.

Prior to Mandalay, Strauss worked as president of Lionsgate Entertainment, which he helped establish with founder Frank Giustra in 1997. He also oversaw the production of over 30 films, including Phil Collins’ Buster, Charlie and Martin Sheen’s Cadence and the Best of the Best series, while president, CEO and chairman of the International Movie Group.

The “West Wing” cast is reuniting once again.

Stars of the hit political drama will reunite on Tuesday, Oct. 15, a month after they appeared on stage together at the Emmy Awards and at the White House with creator Aaron Sorkin and President Joe Biden.

Martin Sheen, Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney and Mary McCormack will appear virtually with Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senator Bob Casey on Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. “for a night of games, performances, and conversation about the stakes of this election.”

Casey is seeking a fourth Senate term in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state in the 2024 election, against Republican David McCormick.

In any administration, the most important staffer is usually the Chief of Staff, who works directly with both the President and his top aides, making sure that policies and instructions are being followed correctly. First lady Jill Biden will host the inside-the-White House TV series’ creator Aaron Sorkin as well as star Martin Sheen and other castmembers. The celebration, which could see a replica of the political drama’s Oval Office set originally built on a Los Angeles soundstage exchanged for the real one in Washington, D.C., follows the premiere of The West Wing in September 1999 and its idealized depiction of a virtuous Democratic administration in the White House.

First Lady Jill Biden will host a reunion of the cast of The West Wing at the White House on Friday afternoon.

The not-so-secret reunion saw Martin Sheen, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney and Richard Schiff appear in a replica of the Oval Office before presenting best drama series.

Sheen opened by saying, “From 1999 to 2006 I had the honor of playing the President of the United States on an extraordinary series created by Aaron Sorkin and produced by John Wells.”

Janney said, “It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago, Aaron and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plot lines for The West Wing.”

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.

After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.

Ahead of ABC’s broadcast of “The 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” on Sunday, September 15, the network and the Television Academy have announced a diverse lineup of talent who will serve as presenters, including Matt Bomer (“Guiding Light”) and Dick Van Dyke.

According to the network, this year’s presenters represent critically acclaimed television series, Emmy-nominated programs across many viewing platforms and genres, and Emmy nominees — all tapped to celebrate television excellence on the esteemed awards show, which this year is being hosted by father and son acting duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”).

Exclusive: The White House is planning an event next week to mark the 25th anniversary of The West Wing, with President Joe Biden marking the occasion with cast and creators, according to sources familiar with the plans.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 20, which is two days before the debut anniversary. The Aaron Sorkin series, produced by Warner Bros. Television, premiered on NBC on Sept. 22, 1999, and went on to run for seven seasons. It also proved to be an inspiration to many who went into politics, with its idealistic depiction of what politics can be.

Martin Sheen, who played President Josiah Bartlet on the series, had a brief meeting with Biden at the White House last month. Sheen was with cast members Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack, authors of the recently published What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, Its Cast And Crew And Its Enduring Legacy Of Service.

It is a deceptively simple premise for a two-hour feature film. A married couple who had planned their retirement in a B&b are, due to dire financial circumstances and bum luck, forced out of their home at a point that is, on the surface at least, completely devastating. With their kids now off at school, they make the decision to pack up what they can in their backpacks and take off on the Salt Path, a 630-mile stretch from Dorset to Somerset on the Southwestern English Coast. To make matters worse, the husband has just been diagnosed with a terminal neurodegenerative disease, but they are bound and determined to complete this adventure, perhaps the last of their lives because they have no other choice.

Oh, and it is a 100% true story.

Exquisitely directed by four-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott with a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (She Said) based on Raynor Winn’s 2018 memoir, The Salt Path is an inspiring story of love and resilience in a situation that might otherwise break most people, especially a couple entering their later years with little hope against an unforgiving system. This is certainly not the first film based on someone setting out on an ambitious walk for various personal reasons. Martin Sheen starred as a man tackling El Camino de Santiago trail in 2010’s spiritual The Way; Reese Witherspoon played the depressed Cheryl Strayed in Wild, the 2014 true story of her 1100-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail; and Mark Wahlberg starred in another true story, 2020’s Joe Bell, about a father who walks across America in protest of the bullying of his son.

All of these films, and other similar stories of determination against all odds, were admirable attempts but not always successful movies as sometimes dramatizing the journey can be a little repetitive. Where Elliott succeeds with a fine Lenkiewicz template, is getting us instantly engaged in the travails of Ray (Gillian Anderson) and Moth (Jason Isaacs), a couple who could be you or me as life hits them hard in the gut and the Salt Path becomes somehow a cure, a spiritual redemption however temporary, to set them on a new path (literally and figuratively) in life. Is it an adventure? Is it insanity or an existential mid-life crisis? In some ways, it is reminiscent of the premise of John Cheever’s The Swimmer and its film adaptation, in which Burt Lancaster swam from one neighbor’s pool to another, encountering various people along the way. But moreover, it is the tale of these two born to come together to experience life together, no matter how hard that gets.

After unreasonably being evicted from their B&b, having their bank account dried up due to legal expenses and losing their farm, this likable couple decides to fullfil a dream and live off the land as it were by embarking with just chump change on an ambitious walk covering 630 breathtaking miles, even as Moth has had a pretty devastating diagnosis. This might stop most people in their tracks, but in this case only sets this couple off in theirs.

The story from this point on becomes episodic as they make their way, stopping at various points and towns, interacting with the locals and relatives, bleeding an Atm dry just for enough to get food, and even for Ray getting a job shearing sheep. Nothing hugely life-threatening happens along the way, no sudden tidal wave or earthquakes, none of the usual movie tropes, but rather a love story of two people making the most of where life has brought them to this point. Of course to make this work, you need actors of the extraordinary grace and talent of Anderson and Isaacs who are entirely believable as this pair staring down nature as an antidote to the cards life has dealt. Both are excellent in essentially a two-hander, although they get support along the way from various people they meet or stay with.

With Helene Louvart’s excellent cinematography a real plus, The Salt Path is a cinematic journey worth taking. It had its world premiere Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Producers are Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley, Lloyd Levin and Beatriz Levin.

Get ready for more nostalgia on Sunday’s 76th Emmy Awards — the second one this year, we keep reminding you — but with a twist. Unlike the 75th ceremony in January, which focused on cast reunions, this time the producers are mashing together iconic stars and their characters, past and present.

That means famous TV moms like Meredith Baxter (“Family Ties”), cops like Jimmy Smits (“NYPD Blue”), lawyers like Gina Torres (“Suits”), doctors like Zach Braff (“Scrubs”), TV villains like Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”) and more. (And that’s just some of the names that have already been confirmed to present).

“The response to January was incredible, and we felt like people really connected to the nostalgia,” said Dionne Harmon, who executive produces for Jesse Collins Entertainment along with Collins and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay. “So, we wanted to figure out a way to bring that nostalgia to the show on Sunday without doing the exact same thing.

When I interviewed Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego and president and CEO Maury McIntyre on Emmy nomination day, they indicated that despite low ratings for the star-studded 75th Emmys on Fox (delayed four months to January of this year), they were thrilled with its production and the nostalgia factor you probably could expect for such a major milestone year.

The pair indicated reunions and nostalgia for TV’s past would be returning to ABC’s turn at broadcasting Sunday’s Primetime Emmys, and just their luck — that network is battling DirecTV in a carriage dispute, and there is a possibility DirecTV customers won’t see the show and likely wins for Disney’s collection of networks. Those notably include FX, which picked up 21 Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend just for Shōgun and The Bear (seven) in their respective Drama Series and Comedy Series categories.
