Joe (ジョー?) also known as the Superstar, is a non-playable character from the Street Fighter series who first appeared in the original Street Fighter game as one of the ten computer-controlled opponents.
Biography
Concept
Joe is modelled after Benny Urquidez also known as "The Jet", who was one of the first Westerners to make it big in Japan in the 1970's. Joe's signature move is Benny's Spinning Back Kick. Despite this most western fans believe that he's loosely based on the late kickboxing legend, Joe Lewis.
Appearance
Joe is a tall, young fellow who has short, spiky, blond hair and wears red pants with white shoes. In his Shadaloo C.R.I. profile artwork, he also wears a light gray tank top with fingerless black gloves and a star-shaped belt buckle. In his original Street Fighter appearance, he wore black shoes and was shirtless.
Story
Joe was formerly the unbeaten kickboxing champion of the United States before violent outbursts and financial troubles caused him to become an outlaw on the road. No longer an outlaw, he currently participates in indie wrestling tournaments under the identity "Super Star".[1]
Drama CDs
He appears in Street Fighter II Drama CDs released only in Japan, "Mad Revenger". At the start of the Drama CD, Joe was supposed to fight Ken at the National Martial Arts Open Tournament held in San Francisco. Before he could fight Ken in the finals, Sagat defeats Joe and would then go onto defeat Ken. His unconscious body was left in the ring.
Trivia
- Up until their new artwork were released in the Shadaloo C.R.I. section of the Capcom Fighters Network website, Joe and Mike were the only fighters never to be officially featured in any other Street Fighter related media outside the original game.
- With Mike's appearance in Balrog's Street Fighter I route ending from Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Joe is the only fighter never to be featured in any other game.
- The Caucasian character and the African-American character featured in the original Street Fighter II intro were initially believed to be Joe and Mike from the very first game. However, the Street Fighter V website later revealed that they were separate characters named Scott and Max, respectively.[6]
- The train yard stage in Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams is reminiscent of Joe's train yard stage.
- In Final Fight: Streetwise, Kyle faces a kickboxing fighter in Little Italy's fight club named "Ghost", who sports the same pants and hair style as Joe. This has led to speculation that "Ghost" is in fact Joe.
- According to Hiroshi Matsumoto, Joe was the inspiration for creating Terry Bogard's design.[7]
- Terry's Backspin Kick seen in many of his appearances bears a strong resemblance to Joe's own Rolling Sobat.
