"Some of these commands are in Calamarian!"
―Rose Tico to her sister[1]

Calamarian, also known as Mon Cal, was a writing system used by the Mon Calamari. Some of the commands used on the MC85 Star Cruiser Raddus were in Calamarian. Resistance technician Rose Tico deciphered the writing to open the hangar bay doors, saving Resistance pilot Poe Dameron.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Calamarian first appeared on a screen in the lead story Rose Knows part of sixth issue of Star Wars Adventures. The story was written by Delilah S. Dawson and illustrated by Derek Charm.[2] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Mon Calamari had a language called Mon Calamarian which was both spoken and written. It was first mentioned in The Star Wars Sourcebook, published 1987,[3] and first appeared in the 1994 novel Dark Apprentice.[4]

The Star Wars Insider short story "Starlight: Shadows Remain," the first part of which was published in Star Wars Insider 207[5] on December 14, 2021,[6] introduced the Mon Calamari language.[5] Any connection between the language and the writing system has yet to be established.
