- For the version of this species after the Super Genesis Wave, see Mobian (Archie). For other uses, see Mobian (disambiguation).
Mobians, also known as mobosapiens[1], are a type of species that exist in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are anthropomorphic animals that live on Mobius, existing alongside Humans and Overlanders, although Mobians are now the dominant species on the planet.
Mobians consist of a large variety of races descended from species of the former animal kingdom. Although the dominant species on the planet, Mobians had suffered nearly twelve years under the brutal rule of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and later his alternate-universe self Dr. Eggman, knowing only a brief period of peace following the former's demise and the latter's arrival to Mobius Prime. In 3237 however, the Eggman Empire suffered a series of setbacks, and although it maintained control over most of the planet, many Mobians remained safe in New Mobotropolis and other parts of the world, as Eggman allowed his regional Sub-Bosses to go unchecked due in part from his fixation on defeating Sonic.[2]
Description[]
Appearance[]
Mobians resemble anthropomorphic animals of various species, such as hedgehogs, dogs, lizards, or hawks. Because of this, their appearances and body shape will vary drastically between individuals. Some adult Mobians may be as short as a human child, with thin bodies and limbs, while other adult Mobians reach the size of adult humans and have far more robust, muscular bodies.
Mobians also display animal-like physical traits based on their mutated nature from the Xorda’s gene bombs, such as Mobian hedgehogs having quills, Mobian bats having wings, or Mobian birds having large talons.
A Mobian's fur, scale, or feather color can also vary between many different shades, from brown, white, black, to blue, purple, or red, and some Mobians can have multiple fur/feather colors. Some Mobians appear to have “hair” that is distinct from their fur, such as with Mina Mongoose, who has purple hair and yellow fur, while others Mobians, such as Amy Rose, appear to have hair that blends seamlessly with their fur.
Characteristics and culture[]
Due to being so widespread and the dominant species of Mobius, the cultures of Mobians can vary greatly, such as the more environmentally-minded Kingdom of Acorn, or the seclusive ninja-based system of the Four Houses, or the more technology-minded cities of the Echidnas, or the tribal lifestyles of the Wolf Pack or the Felidae.
Mobians have historically had bad blood with Overlanders, the human-like descendants of humans. This is in part due to the alleged, more violent nature of Overlanders, who were incapable of being incorporated into Alexander Acorn's multi-cultural society. Many Overlanders often express a sense of superiority over Mobians, due to Overlanders being more technologically ahead to Mobians, on top of Mobians having animal-like appearances, and thus leading Overlanders as viewing them as lesser.[3]
However, although most Mobians have a collective animosity and aversion to Overlanders, this doesn’t mean that they all get along with other groups of Mobians. As witnessed by the Echidnas, who thought themselves superior to other Mobians, and thus segregated themselves from other Mobians, or even the Echidnas' conflict and deep-hatred towards the Dingo Regime whom they share Angel Island with. Likewise, the Four Ninja Houses of the Dragon Kingdom were known to often be in constant conflict with one another before being unifed under the Iron Dominion. Likewise, the Felidae and Wolf Pack often fought over ownership of the Ancient Onyx. However, despite this, it has been shown that many Mobian societies have different groups of Mobians who live side by side in harmony, such as the Kingdom of Acorn, or those in the Northern Tundra and Downunda.[4][5]
When two Mobians of different species have offspring together, the children almost always end up being only one of the species of the parents. For example, King Sonic and Queen Sally are a hedgehog and chipmunk/squirrel respectively, and their two children, Manik and Sonia, are not hybrids, but rather, Manik is fully a hedgehog like his father and Sonia is a chipmunk/squirrel hybrid like her mother. However, hybrids on very rare occasions are possible, albeit not as common, as seen with the aforementioned Sally Acorn who is a chipmunk/squirrel hybrid, or Nack the Weasel, who is a weasel/wolf hybrid. Ixis Naugus is also another example of a hybrid, although his case is unnatural and exceptional.
Powers and abilities[]
The animalistic side[]
Generally it is rare that a Mobian species has abilities that are tied to their pre-Xorda Attack on Earth animal ancestors. While there are surface level traits for some species, like a Mobian turtle being able hide in their shell for protection, avian-based Mobians often being capable of flight, and marine-based Mobians are often being capable of breathing underwater or being skilled swimmers, there are many land-based Mobians who behave more like their Human ancestors or Overlander contemporaries than their critter ancestors.
At times there are characters that can use elements of their animal ancestors' traits that the rest of their species cannot, as well as manifesting abilities and powers far surpassing fellow Mobians. Sonic the Hedgehog, for example, is able to use techniques such as the Spin Dash by using his quills along with other abilities relating to speed beyond what any Hedgehog can perform, but his parents and his uncle Chuck however, are not able to preform such techniques. Knuckles the Echidna can dig with his spiked knuckles but those are confirmed by his father Locke to be a mutation unique to him by the Chaos Emeralds. Tails' flight is a natural ability unique to him with no link to his human and fox critter ancestry.
Chaos Energy[]
Unlike Overlanders, who need machinery to do so, many Mobians have displayed the means of harnessing Chaos energy directly into their own bodies to utilize abilities such as Chaos powers or to achieve a Super State.
Willpower[]
Free will, or Willpower, is an notable aspect Mobians share between each other. Using their willpower, Mobians can survive the deadly effects of the Roboticizer, a weapon Dr. Robotnik used to enslave the planet. The Overlanders, Robotnik’s native species, who are roboticized and don't consent to being roboticized, like Snively, merely become lifeless, motionless, metallic statues.[6][7] On the other hand, Mobians fighting back are turned into autonomous machines. This is due to a Mobian's willpower being stronger to keep their bodies moving. Sally Acorn once succumbed to roboticization and was able resist total control using her willpower,[8] to the point Dr. Robotnik built the "Brain Burn-Thru" program to directly attack willpower.[9] When the Ultimate Annihilator fired, it was only meant to effect Dr. Robotnik but the reality erasing energy allowed Robians to regained control over their free will.[10]
History[]
Xorda Attack[]
Prior to becoming Mobius, the Earth's dominant inhabitants were humans. During the early 21st century however, the scientist Ivan Kintobor provoked the alien species known as the Xorda by capturing their ambassador and dissecting it. As a result, the Xorda bombarded the planet with Gene Bombs, which were supposed to wipe out the human race and maintain the rest of the planet's environment as it was at the time. However, the Gene Bombs instead mutated most of the human and animal populations, creating both Mobians and Overlanders.[11]
At the same time, it would appear that some of the human genome somehow mixed with the animal kingdom, in turn also leading to the birth of Mobians.
Early History and Development[]
Some time after the Xorda attack, the Mobian Alexander Acorn, attempted to integrate many different races of Mobians into a multi-cultural society that would be come to be known as Mobotropolis. Alexander attempted to invite the Echidnas and Overlanders, but the two groups rejected his invitation.
Because Mobians wished to preserve the environment, many, if not all, Mobian societies remained locked in the medieval age for centuries, while the Overlanders hit the industrial age and later the atomic age. Although, eventually, the Mobians too would begin incorporating more and more advanced technology into their societies, such as Nanites, although still nowhere near the level of the Overlanders and Humans, who were often capable of creating space stations like the Space Colony Ark.
War with the Overlanders[]
Between 3220 and 3225, the Mobians fought the Great War, a massive battle against the Overlanders. While the Overlanders were initially defeating the Mobians with little effort on their end, no doubt thanks to their superior technology, the tide of the war would change when the Overlander scientist Julian Kintobor turned traitor against his kind and sided with the Mobians, providing them with information and technology that would soon help sway the war in their favor. However, eventually, a duel was waged between Maximillian Acorn and the Overlord, leader of the Overlanders. Upon winning the duel, King Max would bring a swift end to the war, with both sides retreating to their former territories.[12]
Subjugation by Doctor Robotnik[]
Following the end of the war, the warlord Julian Kintobor would take on the moniker of Doctor Ivo Robotnik, and overthrow King Max while stealing the Roboticizer from Chuck Hedgehog, a machine that could turn Mobians into mindless robot slaves. Following these two major events, Julian quickly used the roboticized Mobians to aid him in taking over nearly the entire planet, putting many Mobian societies into subjugation. As such, several Freedom Fighter groups would emerge throughout the years to battle his tyranny, be it the Knothole Freedom Fighters, Downunda Freedom Fighters, or Artic Freedom Fighters.[13]
After the Super Genesis Wave reset the universe in Sonic & Mega Man: Worlds Collide, the planet setting of the series was renamed to "Sonic's World," with the term "Mobian" being consequently dropped. The term was re-established in the summer of 2016, three years later, as a colloquial term to refer to the anthropomorphic animals that inhabit Sonic's World. The Super Genesis Wave also made humans the regular inhabitants of the planet, with little to no distinction between their video game counterparts. Mobians still maintain a presence on the planet, although the exact nature of their origins is never elaborated on, and they appear to no longer be the dominant species on the planet, now being outnumbered by humans.
- Note: From this point, the Mobian's history continues from their new life in the altered timeline.
