Masato Nakamura (中村 正人 Nakamura Masato?) is a Japanese musician and record producer, and bassist and founder of the Japanese band Dreams Come True. He composed the soundtracks for the first two games of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.[citation needed] He has also provided the voice of Champ in the Japanese dub of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[1]

History[]

Nakamura was originally a session musician before forming the "Cha-Cha & Audrey's Project" with Miwa Yoshida.[citation needed] In 1988, they formed the band Dreams Come True, then in July 2002 they founded the record company DCT Records and now serve as executive producers.[citation needed] In 22 June 2008, Nakamura married Mākii, the former lead vocalist of the rock/metal band High and Mighty Color.[citation needed] Nakamura composes many and arranges almost all the songs for Dreams Come True, and has composed music for television commercials.[citation needed]

While Nakamura created the majority of the soundtracks for Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, financial disagreements caused his involvement with the soundtrack for Sonic 3 & Knuckles to be dropped in favour of Michael Jackson, Sega's in-house musicans, and other musicians.[citation needed] Despite this, Nakamura's original Sonic compositions are still used in later games such as Sonic Advance, the Super Smash Bros. series, Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania.

Trivia[]

  • When composing the music for Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, Nakamura created demo versions of the songs on a synthesizer, which were recorded onto tape and then sent to Sega so that a sound engineer could interpret his compositions into the Genesis sound hardware (further changes to the songs would be made with his supervision and approval). He was instructed to only use four "Voices" (sound channels) in his music to better accommodate the limits of the sound chip, and has said that it was rather challenging for him. The demo versions of his songs also have considerable differences from the final in-game compositions; for example, Aquatic Ruin Zone has a much slower tempo in the Demo track, and Hidden Palace Zone (Sonic 2) notably has an ending to it that was cut before the song was programmed into the game.
  • Nakamura claimed that he attempted to play Sonic 2 while it was in development in an attempt to understand the feeling of the gameplay and properly tie his music into it (he was only given game screenshots and level descriptions as reference while composing for Sonic 1). He eventually deferred to a friend to play it for him instead, as he quickly realized he wasn't very good at playing video games.
  • A very common misconception is that every single track in Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was composed by him. While the majority of it is indeed his work, there are three notable exceptions: the 1-Up Jingle, the Drowning theme, and the Chaos Emerald jingle, which were all composed by Yukifumi Makino (credited as "Macky").
