The giant frogs are non-anthromorphic frogs with a round body and four limbs that highly resemble Froggy's shape as noted by Big although the giant frogs are considerably larger than Froggy in size. The giant frogs' limbs are rather thin, and each one has webbed feet with three orange toes each.
The green giant frogs have a greater resemblance to Froggy, where they have a white underbelly, an orange stripe between their two eyes with yellow-orange sclera and wide black pupils. In contrast, the black giant frogs have a black and dark-blue color scheme; they have red stripes across their black face with light-blue sclera on their eyes, have a dark-blue under belly.
Overview[]
In gameplay, the player can encounter the green giant frogs in both Frog Forest and Lost Jungle while the black variants only appear in Lost Jungle. The frogs have the ability to summon rain when it spots the player nearby (denoted by seeing a red exclamation mark in a speech bubble similar to regular Badnik enemies), either making plants and mushrooms grow rapidly or destroying them. The green frogs allow the player to access new areas of the stage by growing plants which is often necessary to progress through certain sections of the stage.
Meanwhile, the black frogs impede the player's progress by making plants wither and die. In particular, the black frogs' rain can detach the fruit which can destroy various Badniks upon contact. While summoning rain, the black frog has a deeper croaking sound than that of the green frog's, while the rain the former summons gives the stage a darker tone than the green frog's lighter. After summoning rain for a short period of time, the giant frogs will leap away. If a Power Type character attacks a giant frog, it jumps away immediately though the rain will continue as normal.
Team Chaotix have to avoid detection from the green frogs during their mission in Frog Forest. This may require Espio to use Leaf Swirl to turn invisible, allowing him to sneak through the frogs undetected. Getting spotted by a frog will cause the player to restart the stage from the beginning or from the last checkpoint they have touched (without losing a Life).
There is also a purple variation of the black frogs, used on the PlayStation 2 ports, which have less green in value of color than those used on other releases. The Xbox version retains this variation in the 2P Play level's texture archive.
When playing as Team Chaotix in Frog Forest and Lost Jungle, the frogs do not attempt to constantly look at the playable characters while they are far from the frogs (even while Espio is not under the effects of Leaf Swirl) when compared to the other teams.

A light frog rain effect. This rain grows it's plants including peaches, and bouncy mushrooms.
A dark frog rain effect with "soft light" blending applied. The black rain releases the peaches from the stem and causes plants to wither.
