The Egg Phoenix[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a massive attack aircraft created by Dr. Eggman, and a variant of the Egg Hawk.[2] True to its name, it posses a variety of fire-based abilities.
Concept and creation[]
The Egg Phoenix was designed by Tracy Yardley as a variation of the Egg Hawk, with Yardley's design for the vehicle featuring in Sonic the Hedgehog #197 and on the cover for Sonic the Hedgehog #198. However, when artist Renae De Liz drew the Egg Phoenix in Sonic the Hedgehog #198, she was unaware of Yardley's design, and as such, depicted the Egg Phoenix in a notably different fashion.[2][3]
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Egg Phoenix is a large red aircraft built in the image of a mythical phoenix. It features two blue eyes, a pair of clawed gray legs, a orange beak, two red wings with white tips, and a sleek gray engine built into its body.[1]
The Egg Phoenix has also been depicted in a slightly different design, with notable differences including the shape and coloration of the wings, and the addition of a cockpit windshield.[4]
Features and traits[]
In addition to being capable of flight, the Egg Phoenix can engulf its exterior in flames, and bombard foes with missiles and deadly beams of fire.[4]
History[]
Consequences[]
The Egg Phoenix was created and tested by Dr. Eggman in the Eggdome, with Snively noting the results as well above Eggman's expectations. Eggman was satisfied with this, and declared the vehicle ready for launch.[1]
Egg Phoenix Down[]
Noticing the advance of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and Chaotix on the Eggdome, and their defeat of the Dark Egg Legion forces he sent out, Eggman launched the Egg Phoenix and began using it to bombard the heroes with fiery attacks. As the body of the aircraft was covered in flames, none of the Freedom Fighters were initially able to damage it. However, Sally came up with the plan of having Sonic, Vector, Knuckles, Tails and Bunnie use teamwork to lead the Egg Phoenix straight up into the air to make it stall out. With the fires out on the Egg Phoenix, Saffron, Charmy and Ray planted Neutralizing Mines on the craft's hull allowing Tails to deactivate it, causing the vessel to crash and blow up.[4]
Scrambled[]
At some point after its destruction, Eggman rebuilt the Egg Phoenix and stored the updated model in the hangar of the Death Egg Mark 2. During the doctor's confrontation with Snively and the Iron Queen, Orbot and Cubot considered deploying it again, but ultimately chose against it in favor of the Egg Beater.[5]
