Crystal Egg Zone (クリスタルエッグ [2] Kurisutarueggu?, lit. "Crystal Egg") is the seventh and final Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit). As with all other Zones in this game, Crystal Egg Zone consists of two standard Acts followed by a shorter, third Act which contains the Zone's boss. It can only be accessed if the player has successfully collected all the Chaos Emeralds in previous zones; otherwise, the Bad Ending will follow the defeat of Mecha Sonic in Scrambled Egg Zone.
Description[]
Crystal Egg is perhaps the least aesthetically offensive of all the final bases Dr. Robotnik's constructed over the years; a zone of glassy, translucent architecture where even the spikes glow in rainbow hues. Blocks embossed with Robotnik's pugnacious visage frequently conceal hidden walkways.
Story[]
With his final machine destroyed, Dr. Robotnik makes a hasty retreat down an escape chute. Sonic gives chase, but not quickly enough to stop the doctor escaping via teleporter. Just as the hedgehog thinks all is lost, Tails warps in through the teleport terminal, released from Robotnik's grasp.
Gameplay[]
This zone features simple gameplay, spikes, Rings, and a Jaws-esque floating Badnik. Notably, it features mini Rotating Discs like Gimmick Mountain Zone
Overview[]
Act 1[]
Act 1 is actually fairly straightforward. There are two routes for Sonic to take, they’re both roughly the same though, but the lower route has some more rings than to top. To compensate, the top path is safer. From there, Sonic must contend with a long stretch of spikes. He can cross them by taking the lower path, which leads to a platform. Or, he can take springs and isolated blocks, though he must be wary not to fall. From there, the Goal Plate is nearby
Act 2[]
Act 2 is vertical like Scrambled Egg Zone Act 2. Sonic must ascend using springs, then, take a ramp that’ll take him to the next section of the stage. From there, Sonic must scale upwards either by taking slopes and springs, or by rolling through breakable walls.
Act 3[]
Act 3 is simply a tube leading to the Boss.
Boss[]
The game's last boss battle takes place inside a lightning chamber, which Dr. Robotnik makes extra-fatal by throwing gyrating, flower-shaped energy bolts into the mix. However, the boss actually is not that difficult if the player stays inside the transport chutes until the chamber clears; at which point they can leap out, attack Robotnik, and dive back in to safety before his attacks renew themselves.
