A Pirate Apprentice is an individual who resides on a pirate ship in order to learn the ways of piracy from more experienced pirates.
Role and Duties[]
Pirate apprentices are younger members of a pirate crew that possess the least authority on a ship, since their main purpose is to learn how to become a proper pirate from the rest of the crew. Their training usually involves partaking in habitual pirate activities such as raiding other ships.[1] Once apprentices are fully educated, either they become full-fledged members and maybe even officers of their respective crews,[2] or leave to become captains of their own crews.[1]
Upon the beginning of the Great Age of Pirates, the tradition of pirates taking on apprentices seemed to have fallen out of practice. However, some crews are known to have added children to their ranks if they have proven to be useful, such as the Donquixote Pirates, though they weren't referred to as "apprentices". Additional trainings may be provided. For example, when the young Trafalgar Law was formally inducted into Donquixote Pirates, he was tutored by the group in all kinds of combat, such as martial arts, gunnery and swordsmanship.

List of Former Apprentices[]
- Both Shanks and Buggy had been apprentices of the Roger Pirates since they were 9 years old until their captain chose to disband the crew. Afterwards, they both eventually became infamous captains of their own pirate crews.[1]
- Shanks established the Red Hair Pirates and became one of the Four Emperors.[3]
- Buggy established the Buggy Pirates and eventually became a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea before the system's dissolution,[4] and then unintentionally became the "leader" of the Cross Guild and a member of the Four Emperors.
- Kaidou joined the Rocks Pirates as an apprentice at the age of 15 before the crew's disbandment at the God Valley Incident. He then went on to become the Governor-General of the Beasts Pirates and one of the Four Emperors before being deposed during the Raid on Onigashima.[5]
- Marco was an apprentice of the Whitebeard Pirates before eventually becoming the crew's First Division Commander and subsequently led the remnants after Whitebeard's death until being defeated in the Payback War.[2]
- Inuarashi and Nekomamushi both became apprentices of the Whitebeard Pirates at age 10 after sneaking aboard their ship, then 4 years later sailed with the Roger Pirates until returning to the Wano Country. Then after the tragic death of Kouzuki Oden, they returned to their original home country of Zou where they became its rulers until they resigned their position to Carrot so that they could become Kouzuki Momonosuke's retainers in Wano.
- Marshall D. Teach became an apprentice of the Whitebeard Pirates at age 12.[6][7] Serving as an apprentice for at least two years, his crew engaged in battle with the Roger Pirates, during which he encountered the apprentices Shanks and Buggy.[8] Sometime after Teach had become a full fledged pirate, he served in the crew's Second Division under Portgas D. Ace until he defected from the crew after murdering Thatch to obtain the Yami Yami no Mi. He then founded the Blackbeard Pirates, and during the Summit War of Marineford, he, along with his crew, murdered Whitebeard and somehow stole his Devil Fruit ability for himself. Then after the Payback War, he took Whitebeard's position in the Four Emperors and usurped Ochoku as the ruler of Hachinosu.
Trivia[]
- All of the crews that once had apprentices were ones that existed during Gol D. Roger's time and are all now disbanded.
- All known apprentices have ties with the Four Emperors; either they became emperors or served under them.
- Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, and Monkey D. Luffy are the only Emperors that were never apprentices.
