Statistics are number values assigned to a Pokémon that determines certain factors in battle (such as how much damage a Pokémon does or which Pokémon goes first) In the Pokemon game series, each pokemon is unique in their starting and learned move sets. They are also given a base set of stats as well.

Stats are a collection of point values distributed in different categories. These stats help determine how a Pokémon is best suited to perform in a battle. For example, the "Attack" stat helps to determine how much damage their "physical attacks" will inflict to another rival's active Pokémon. Higher attack stats means they will deal more damage to the enemy's health, which helps it finish the battle quicker and preserve it's own health from facing more of an enemy attacks.

Many stats have a counterpart stat to them. The counterpart to Attack is the "Defense" stat. Defense determines a Pokémon's hardness: or how their body's "physical defenses" can withstand a physical attack from a rival Pokémon. Higher Defensive stats allow them to prevent more damage from being inflicted on them.

Some stats do not have counterparts, such as the Speed stat which determines how soon they can act with their movesets. Faster speed can change the pace of a battle if the move can "hit" an opponent first or give them negative status effects to hinder their abilities, or perhaps "help" by provide healing and positive buffs to your own Pokemon.

Stats[]

Hit Points[]

Hit points (also referred to as HP) determine how much damage a Pokémon can take before fainting. Pokémon faint when they have no more HP. In battle, HP is shown as a vertical bar that changes in length and color depending on the Pokémon's remaining HP. HP Up is used to increase a Pokémon's base HP.

Attack[]

Attack is the stat that determines how much damage a Pokémon's physical moves can do to its opponent, similar to the "Strength" stat in conventional RPGs. Physical moves are ones where the Pokémon makes contact with its opponent, such as Fire Fang, Volt Tackle, Iron Tail and Double Kick. This is used to calculate damage from moves in the physical category. Protein vitamins can be used to permanently increase a Pokémon's base Attack.

Defense[]

Defense is the stat that determines how much damage a Pokémon will receive from its opponent. This is used to calculate damage from moves in the physical category (with the exception of Psyshock). Iron is used to increase a Pokémon's base Defense.

Special Attack[]

Special Attack is the stat that determines how much damage a Pokémon can do to its opponent. This is used to calculate damage from moves in the special category. Calcium is used to increase a Pokémon's base Special Attack.

Special Defense[]

Special Defense is the stat that determines how much damage a Pokémon will receive from its opponent. This is used to calculate damage from moves in the special category. Zinc is used to increase a Pokémon's base Special Defense.

Speed[]

Speed is the stat that is used to determine which Pokémon attacks in what order. Generally, the faster Pokémon go first with the exception of Trick Room. Moves also have Priority which overrides the speed stat unless the Pokémon use moves with the same Priority. Some moves rely on difference in speed stat for the damage calculation, such as Electro Ball. Carbos is used to increase a Pokémon's base Speed.
