Max is an aspiring Pokémon Trainer and a former traveling companion of Ash Ketchum duringPokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire. He is the younger brother of May and the son of Norman and Caroline. He made his debut appearance in There's no Place Like Hoenn. After Ruby and Sapphire, Max would appear in non-speaking cameos and flashbacks in later series.

- Max's appearance may have been based on the School Kid Trainer class from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
- The Schoolkid artwork from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire closely resembles Max.
- When Max is first seen, he is even standing in the pose of a School Kid who challenges the player.
- According to an interview with Tsunekazu Ishihara, Max was created during a conversation with Satoru Iwata. His glasses are the same model Iwata wore then, and his overall design was based on Iwata's son.
