The Kingdom of Torna is one of the nation of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Torna used to be an extremely influent nation of Alrest during ancient times. However, it was destroyed in 3564 during the Aegis War as a casualty of the final battle between Malos and Mythra. By the time of the main game in 4058, Torna is only known as the birthplace of the legendary hero Addam Origo, as well as the namesake for the terrorist organization, Torna. Torna was reknown for its advanced engineering before the war and this tradition continued with their successor state, the Kingdom of Tantal. Tantal being an isolationist society, the fact that it was founded by Tornan survivors is relatively unknown amongst the people of Alrest.
History[]
Ancient Past[]
The exact founding date of the Kingdom of Torna is unknown. What is known is that the Kingdom of Torna was an old country that existed in what was known as the "distant past" of Alrest. The Kingdom of Torna was founded on the Titan of the same name. The Tornan titan was an extremely powerful and violent creature. As a result, the early tornan kings were war mongers, who used the titan's power to subjugate the other nations of Alrest. This created a 1000 years period during which Torna dominated Alrest. It is shown that during this period, Torna was used at least once to kill multiple nation sized titans at the same time with a powerful beam attack coming out of its mouth. The name of the ancient nations that were felled by the titan's savagery are unknown. At the end of this period, a Tornan king named Alektos I ascended to the throne. Alektos I decided to seal away Torna's power with the engineering technics of his people to bring peace to Alrest.
After the end of their warmonger period, Torna became a more peaceful society. They became a nation known for worshipping the Blade life cycle itself alongside the more traditional worship of the Architect. Their society was a place were Blades, Titans, and humans could live in peace. The womb of Tornan titan gave birth to many Titans, including Azurda. A few decades before the events of Torna, the current Tornan King became king. He had a bastard child with a common woman. This child would be Addam Origo. The king did not see Addam as any different from his legitimate family and included him in the actual line of succession and made him the Lord of Aletta. The popularity of the young bastard prince amogst the people would lead to constant conflict between the king and his younger brother, the High Prince Zettar. Even if Zettar was second in line to the throne, while Addam was fourth, he still felt like his popularity was a threat and that the young prince would inevitably attempt to seize the throne at some point. This could not be further from the thruth as Addam hated the idea of becoming king and wanted to be left alone growing plants on his property.
Aegis War[]
In 3562 after a young Indoline priest by the name of Amalthus came back from the World Tree with two Core Crystals obtained from the realm of the Architect himself. When he awoke one of them, it became Malos. Malos fueled by the seething hatred Amalthus felt toward the world started to use his immense power to lay waste to all nations of Alrest. He started to call himself the Aegis and argued that his acts of destruction were the will of the divine. Amalthus, refusing to loose control of Malos decided to find someone who would be able to control the second Aegis to stop his rampage. This was the starting point of the Aegis war. In the year 3563, Amalthus made his way to the court of the Tornan King. There Zettar tried to awaken the aegis but was denied by the Core Crystal. Addam succeeded and became Mythra's Driver. This only made Zettar feel even more threatened by the young prince who was now burdened with the duty of saving the world from Malos.
Malos conducted random attacks on pretty much all the titans of Alrest during the following year, including Torna. It was during one of these Gargoyle attacks that Addam encountered Jin, Haze, and Lora, two of the future heroes of Torna, who would participate in the final battle of the Aegis War. The heroes then joined with Emperor Hugo Ardanach of the Empire of Mor Ardain, and his Blades, Brighid and Aegaeon. Hugo was a friend of Addam, and accepted to figh alongside him for the sake of the world. They were finally joined by Minoth, a Flesh Eater who was a former Blade of Amalthus. The heroes of Torna made their way to the capital, Auresco, and after a bit of political turmoil with Zettar, the capital was attacked by Malos and his Artifice. Malos had seen the true form of the Tornan Titan in the data contained in his core crystal and decided to break the seal of Alektos I. He would overwhelm the Titan's core with the absurd amount of Ether contained in his Gargoyles to unleash a suicide attack that would completely wipe out Alrest. The heroes are unable to prevent Malos from stealing the seal. Malos reveal Torna's true form to the world and promise to wait for the party at the core for one final fight before he starts his rampage.
Fall of Torna[]
Following Malos' escape, Zettar tries to undermine Addam in front of the king to no avail. Lora, who stood up to Zettar in front of the king is rewarded with the title of knight for her bravery in the fight against Malos. During the ceremony, Zettar vents his frustration to Amalthus. Their conversation changes topic to Amalthus' role as Malos' Driver after Zettar recalls his failure to awaken Mythra. Amalthus assures him that Malos acts the way he does because it is the will of the divine, something that Amalthus has clearly started to believe by that point. He then tries to sway Zettar to his side as he needs "many able hands" to make the will of the divine a reality.
The Heroes of Torna finally confront Malos. Malos start merging the Gargoyles with Torna's Core Crystal during the fight and impose a 10 minute time limit on them for dramatic purposes. Malos' efforts to overwhelm the Titan's core with Gargoyles are thwarted by Mythra who uses Artifice Ophion, and Siren to destroy a large amount of them. The battle shift to a fight between the Siren of both Aegises. Mythra is initially bested by Malos who taunts her and tell her to unleash her destructive instinct if she wants to trully best him. Upon her refusal, he uses his own Siren to destroy most of Auresco in a single attack, killing Milton, as well as a lot of Tornan civillians. This breaks Mythra who start fighting Malos at full power without any care for potential consequences. She overpowers him and destroy his Siren. Malos is last seen plummeting towards the Cloud Sea as his body is partially destroyed by Mythra's attack. This attack unleashes a rain of deadly projectiles that destroy Torna's core. Hugo dies to protect Addam.
In the final moments of the Tornan titan, the survivors are evacuated by the available titan ships. Zettar tries to convince his brother to escape while the palace of Auresco is falling appart alongside the rest of the Titan but the king refuses. Zettar reluctantly flles as his brother entrust his kingdom to Addam just before getting crushed to death by chunks of his own collapsing palace falling from the ceiling. Finally, Torna breaks appart and sink to the bottom of the Cloud Sea.
Aftermath[]
In the aftermath of the Aegis War, Tornan culture is very much alive as there is a significant number of survivors from the fall of their original titan. Addam's own militia is relocated to Spessia, while Zettar is taken in by Amalthus, who plans on using his ambition for his own political moves in the direct aftermath of the war. Addam goes to the Leftherian Archipelago in order to hide Pneuma's sword in the Spirit Crucible Elpys. He ask Lora to go to Spessia and tell the militia to rejoin him in Leftheria as soon as possible. Addam then goes to hide Pyra in a Tornan ship that is then sunk at the bottom of the Cloud Sea. Meanwhile, Amalthus uses the aftermath of the war to assassinate his way to the position of Indoline Praetor after getting rid of Rhadallis. He launches an attack on spessia to remove the remanants of the Tornan culture as he thinks that their worship of the cycle would hinder his plans of slowly choking the world by removing the possibility of new Titan being born. Lora reaches the camp just before Amalthus' attack. It is unknown if she was able to give Addam's message to them but it is probably since Addam was able to muster enough followers to create Fonsett Village.
Amalthus immediatly attacks Spesssia and Lora dies in the attack. Jin consumes her heart and swear to take revenge on Amalthus. Most of the Tornan survivors are split. Some are captured by Amalthus and used in his Blade Eater experiments. They are then executed. Mikhail is the only known survivor of these experiments. Some survivors probably joined Addam in his life of peace and tranquility in Leftheria. There was also a third group that refused to let go of their Tornan heritage and tried to recreate the nation. This group was divided into the Addamites who believed that Addam was the only rightful ruler of Torna, and the Counter-Addamite who supported Zettar's claim to the throne as he was second in line after the King. In the end, since Addam pretty much disappeared into Letheria, far from political disputes, Zettar won this conflict and reformed Torna into the Kingdom of Tantal by taking advantage of the confusion of the war to claim that he was descended of Addam in the decades following the Aegis War. The Tantalese then went to live on the Genbu Titan. Amalthus was one of the only people who knew of the Tantalese royal family's origins and he used it as levrage to recieve a tribute from Zettar's descendants and force them to become and isolationist society if they did not want to have their secret exposed. This basically removed any Tornan influence from Alrestian politics just as Amalthus wanted. As time passed, the nature of the cycle was largely forgotten and it appeared as if the Titans were simply dying out.
Legacy[]
By the time of the main game Torna's memory survive through the terrorist organization led by Jin. Why he chose that name is ambiguous. Amalthus suppose that he did it by loyalty or nostalgia. It is also possible that he chose that name to symbolize the organisation's goal to end humanity for rejecting the cycle by destroying Torna. Tantal pretty much still sees itself as a successor state of Torna. Addam's role in the foundation of Fonsett Village was largely forgotten and by the time of Rex, the Leftherian boy has never heard of the Tornan origins of his own culture. The rotten corpse of the Tornan Titan is also still around. It sunk at the bottom of the Cloud Sea and reached the Land of Morytha were it still is 500 years later.
Culture[]
Religion[]
Torna clearly worships the Architect like every other nation of Alrest and somewhat respects the autority of the Indoline Praetorium. Unlike other nation of Alrest, it has a secondary cult. This is the cult of the life cycle of Blades. Torna is a society were humans and Blades live in harmony. The cycle encompass the transformation of Core Crystals into Blades, Blades into Titans, and then Titans giving birth to new Core Crystals and eventually new Titans. This worship is also what le Praetor Amalthus to wipe out the remanants of Torna in hope of making knowledge of the cycle much more difficult to come across. Since Amalthus is directly trying to destroy the world by preventing Blades into becoming new Titans, this makes a lot of sense.
Royal Family[]
The royal family of Torna is supposedly extremely old as it dominated Alrest for at least a thousand years in the past. Despite this, not much is known about its individula kings. The line of succession seems to also goes to the siblings of the current king before even going to his children as Zettar is second, which is higher than Addam's fourth place and the unknown claimant in third place. It is unknown if this is because Addam is a bastard or if it's normal. The relationship between the third claimant and the king is also unknown. It could be anything from a third brother to Zettar's son if bastards are lower than legitimate heirs in the succession line. Note that the members of the Tantal royal family are not included because the Kingdom of Tantal is its own entity but they are technically the same royal family.
- The warmonger kings - the kings who dominated Alrest with the terrifying power of the Tornan Titan during 1000 years.
- Alektos I - The king who ended the 1000 years of war by sealing the Tornan Titan
- The Tornan King - The unamed king of Torna during the Aegis war. He dies alongside the Titan in 3564.
- High Prince Zettar - Second in line to the throne and brother of the king during the Aegis War. He eventually becomes the founder of Tantal and its first king in the aftermath of the war. He is the founder of the Tantal branch of the royal family and an ancestor of King Eulogimenos, and Prince Ozychlyrus of Tantal.
- Addam Origo - Bastard child of the Tornan king, he is fourth in line and the designated heir of his father. However, Addam never became king of Torna, instead he founded Fonsett in the aftermath of the war and lived the rest of his life in peace.
