Counter is a support ability used in various video games, notably RPG's such as in the Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem series. A counterattack is initiated when an opposing force attacks your player. Following this, if the unit can counter, it will counterattack the other unit, delivering a considerable amount of damage.
Counter is a move in the Pokémon games, where the Pokémon using the move can deal back twice the damage to the Pokémon who attacked it

In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Fire Emblem characters; Marth, Roy, Ike, and Lucina, as well as Palutena from the Kid Icarus series all have a move called counter as their down special. The player not only avoids damage, but deals damage back multiplied depending on the character. There are other characters with similar counterattack specials like Shulk and Vision, Little Mac and Slip Counter, Lucario and Double Team, and Corrin and Counter Surge.
