Ant Troopers are a species of two legged ant-like enemies from the Mario series. They debuted in Super Mario 3D World and are mainly known for their ability to walk on walls and ceilings. Aside from the regular Ant trooper, this game also introduced the Big Ant Trooper and the Horned Ant Trooper, which are related to the regular Ant Trooper.
Mario series[]
Super Mario 3D World[]
They were introduced in Super Mario 3D World and reappear in its Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They appear rarely through the game from world 4 onwards. Their particularity is that they walk on walls and ceilings as easily as if they walked on the floor. They cannot be defeated by a jump, the character who jumped on them will bounce instead. They can be defeated by groun-pounds, attacks with the Super Bell, attacks with the Super Leaf, if they are hit by a projectile, or Rosalina's attacks. They can also sometimes carry items with them.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]
In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, they are relatively similar to their Super Mario 3D World equivalent. Unlike other enemies, they cannot be stopped by using the touch screen and will drop a Coin instead.
Super Mario Maker 2[]
They reappear in Super Mario Maker 2 where they can be placed in the Super Mario 3D World-level style. They work in the same way they did in their first appearance with some minor differences. They can now be given wings, which will change their behavior. A winged Ant Trooper, will fly in a horizontal line until it hits a wall, which causes it to change directions. If they are given a parachute, they will slowly glide to the ground while flailing their feet. In this game, they can be defeated with the Super Hammer or the Super Star.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]
In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Ant Troopers appear alongside Horned Ant Troopers in battle in the Twinsy Tropics Dungeon. If Horned Ant Troopers take enough damage, they lose their spike helmets, turning them into regular Ant Troopers and lowering their defense. While in this state, they attack the Mario Bros. by dashing into them instead.
