Causes sleep.
Description
Sleep is a Black Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It inflicts the sleep status effect on one target or an entire party, which prevents a target from acting until being woken up by curing the status, or inflicting physical damage. Sleep is usable by the Black Magic and Red Magic skillsets (and can be used twice with Dualcast), and can also be used as a Spellblade. It is one of the spells that can be cast from the Wonder Wand for free.
Sleep is also an enemy ability that can be used by Ricard Mage, Siren, and Sleepy. It can be utilized by the player by catching and releasing a Sleepy.
Obtained[]
Sleep can be purchased for 300 gil at Karnak or Crescent. Karnak is the earliest place Sleep can be obtained. Once it is purchased, it can be used by any of the skillsets with the spell.
Mechanics[]
Sleep attempts to inflict the sleep status effect, preventing the target from acting for its duration. A sleeping target also cannot avoid attacks. Sleeping targets automatically wake up when they take physical damage, but not from magical damage. The only physical attacks that do not wake a target from sleep are Mineuchi and the last two hits of Rapid Fire.
Use[]
Sleep is a relatively cheap spell, and can be useful when applied to somewhat larger enemies to prevent them from attacking. This allows the party to focus on defeating other enemies first, not having to worry about a larger enemy. It can also be used in combination with spellcasting in a mage-heavy party, or with abilities like Mineuchi that can damage through sleep, to prevent enemies attacking while not being attacked. The downside to sleep is that many bosses are immune.
The Blue Magic spell Time Slip is more turn-efficient than Sleep because it sleeps a target and also inflicts old, weakening them over time. Therefore, when Time Slip is available, it should be used instead, as its MP cost is not too much higher.
