Description
Self-Destruct, also known as Exploder, is a Blue Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It deals non-elemental piercing damage based on the caster's current HP, but kills the user in the process.
Self-Destruct can also be used by catching and releasing a Bomb without killing the releaser.
Obtained[]
The earliest Self-Destruct can be obtained is from Motor Trap on the Fire-Powered Ship. Motor Trap needs to be hit with a Thunder spell for it to use it.
Self-Destruct can also be used by Bomb, Purobolos, Grenade, and Gilgamesh (#310). Prototype and Unknown (#171) have it when controlled, but then it is impossible to target a party member with it.
Use[]
Self-Destruct can potentially deal immense damage if used at full HP, and early on, can kill most normal enemies. Having Raise on-hand is ideal, to allow the character to be revived after using Self-Destruct so that they can still obtain the rewards from battle. Self-Destruct's deals more damage by increasing the user's HP; the Monk provides HP +30% when mastered, and a natural Stamina boost to Freelancer and Mime to achieve this.
Damage dealt by Self-Destruct drops off later in the game because enemies' HP scales greater than the HP of the party, while other attacks that the party have access to deal much more damage than Self-Destruct will be capable of.
Using Self-Destruct on Azulmagia teaches him the spell and he will use it against the party, destroying himself in the process.
