Deals fire damage.

Description

Firaga, also known as Fire3, is a Black Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It is the highest-level fire-elemental spell and can be acquired later in the game. The spell can be used to hit one target or an entire party. Firaga is usable by the Black Magic skillset, can be used twice with Dualcast and Black Magic equipped, and can also be used as a Spellblade. Firaga is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand, and is an added ability to the Fire Lash.

Firaga is also an enemy ability that can be cast by Barrier, Enuo, Exdeath in the first fight, Flaremancer, Fury, Liquid Flame, Melusine, Necrophobe, Neo Exdeath, Omniscient, and Triton.

Obtained[]

Firaga can be purchased for 6000 gil at Moore.

Firaga can also be used by catching and releasing a Mini Magician, Dark Elemental (#233), or Exoray. It can be cast on all foes by breaking a Flame Rod during battle. Attacking with the Fire Lash equipped has it cast a free single-target Firaga 33% of the time.

Mechanics[]

As a spell, Firaga's damage is calculated as follows:

If the target absorbs fire, it is healed instead of damaged; if it is immune to fire, the attack misses. If the target resists fire, the Attack modifier in the formula is halved, but if it is weak to fire, the modifier is doubled and the attack ignores the target's Magic Defense. Firaga is affected by reflect.

Several pieces of equipment increase the power of elemental attacks by 50%. The bonus is applied before subtracting the opponent's Magic Defense. The weapons that boost fire are the Black Mage's Flame Rod and Magus Rod, and the Geomancer's Rune Chime. The Mix Elemental Power strengthens all elements.

Use[]

Firaga is acquired midway through the game, and unlike the lower-tier spells, is not usable through Red Magic. This means it can be used by Black Mages, but due to its relatively high MP cost, should not be used too regularly, though wearing a Gold Hairpin halves MP costs. The lower-tier Fira spell can be used more frequently, until party members' levels improve to the point where Firaga can be used commonly even in normal fights. As with other fire-elemental spells, it should be used to target enemies weak to fire.

Mystic Knights can also use Firaga as a Spellblade once acquired. It is incredibly strong, as against non-Heavy enemy types, Firaga Spellblade has a chance to instantly kill enemies weak to fire; against Heavy types, it still greatly increases damage output, especially if they are weak to fire. Because Spellblade only consumes MP once, Firaga completely outclasses Fira as a Spellblade, and the only reason to use Fira at this point is if another job is equipping the Spellblade skillset at a level below 5.

Firaga deals considerably damage than summoning Ifrit, or the Blue Magic spell Flame Thrower. It also deals more damage than the other fire-elemental summon, Phoenix, although Phoenix is not used primarily for its damage. Though Flare may appear fire-attuned, it is actually non-elemental, and so Firaga remains the best fire-elemental spell in the game.

Later in the game, when the Black Magic spell Flare, the White Magic spell Holy, the Time Magic spell Meteor, or the summons Leviathan and Bahamut, are available, they greatly outclass Firaga in terms of damage. Firaga may still deal comparable damage when targeting an enemy's elemental weakness, and/or when empowered, but for common use, Firaga is outclassed.
