FFVI Stop status

Celes stopped in Final Fantasy VI (GBA).

Stop (ストップ, Sutoppu?) is a recurring status effect in the Final Fantasy series. A stopped unit is frozen into temporal stasis, so that time stands still for them even as other units act normally. This allows opponents to get several turns and attack without retaliation until Stop wears off, returning the affected unit to normal time.

In Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy XII, like Slow status, Stop is removed by Dispel instead of Esuna. In some games the Auto-Haste passive ability grants immunity to Stop. The item Remedy can also remove Stop in most games.

An afflicted unit cannot act until the status wears off. This also halts timers for other effects, though that part is somewhat buggy (see Stop bug). Haste causes Stop to wear off faster, while Slow prolongs it.

Final Fantasy V[]

Stopped characters cannot act or evade and halts all statuses that have a timer on them, with the exception of sap, which will continue to tick. The player can inflict it with Stop Time Magic spell, Romeo's Ballad song and Calm from Beastmaster. The Kagenui weapon also sometimes inflicts stop status when attacking with it physically.

Final Fantasy VI[]

A unit affected by stop will have its ATB bar halted, unable to act or evade attacks. Stop pauses the timer on most effects that wear off over time, such as the reflect status. If Terra's Trance gauge expires while she is stopped, she remains in Trance until KO'd or until the end of battle. Stop also eventually wears off and it is removed at the end of battle. The player can stop enemies with Stop spell, Kagenui weapon, and Eclipse Bushido.

Final Fantasy VII[]

Stop status halts the time counter for the afflicted, preventing their ATB gauge from filling, but also halting time based effects, such as Barrier or Regen. The afflicted appears frozen in space. Linking Added Effect Materia with Contain, Time, or Choco/Mog in armor makes the character immune to the effect, and these setups in weapons make the party member's normal attacks randomly induce the status onto susceptible targets. Stop is not cured by Esuna, but by DeSpell, White Wind, Angel Whisper, and Aeris's status healing Limit Breaks. Stop is distinct from Paralyzed in that it lasts longer and the afflicted character's Limit gauge will still fill if they are damaged while in this status.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth[]

Stop renders a target unable to act for its duration. If used on a staggered target, it locks the stagger in place for its duration. Stop is applied with Stop Stop from the Time Materia Time Materia and randomly from the Rancid Breath enemy skill. It can be removed with Esuna Esuna and cannot co-exist with Haste or Slow. It can be mitigated/avoided with Warding Materia Warding Materia, Protective Boots, and Ribbon.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

FFVIII Stop Symbol

Targets under Stop are unable to act or avoid attacks. If the target was afflicted with any status effects prior to being stopped, their effects and durations are halted as well. The effect lasts approximately 13.3 seconds. Stopped party members are frozen in place and their ATB gauge is grayed out. The player can inflict it with Stop, either as a spell or with ST-Atk-J, as well as with Bad Breath and Doomtrain. The player can prevent it with ST-Def-J and heal it with Esuna and Treatment.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Target's ATB is frozen, preventing any action. Stop can be cured with a Remedy/Angel's Snack and Dispel. Stopped characters count as incapacitated for Game Over purposes. It is caused by the Stop spell and prevented by Locomotion. It is an effect in Gastro Fork and Heavy Lance. Enemies defeated via Stop do not yield EXP; the status is thus similar to Petrify.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Final Fantasy X-2: Last Mission[]

Stop makes the target unable to take any action. The player can inflict the status through the Festivalist's ability Spinner.

Final Fantasy XII[]

FFXII Stop Icon

While a target is stopped, other status effects are also halted. For example, Sap will stop draining HP for the duration of Stop, and its duration will be paused until Stop has run its course. This can be abused by casting Reverse followed by Stop on a character, thus allowing the character to absorb all forms of damage until Stop wears off. This is especially useful for bosses which always target the nearest character, as equipping the other party members with ranged weapons will keep them alive while the Reversed character is taking all the hits. A stopped character is immune to Decoy, so a stopped character with Reverse cannot be made into a lure. A stopped character can be used to trigger the Immobilize glitch.

Stop is removed by Chronos Tear, Remedy (once the Remedy Lore 3 has been purchased), and Dispel. The accessories Power Armlet and Ribbon make the wearer immune to Stop. The player can inflict Stop onto targets with the Stop Time Magicks spell and with items when their effects are reversed with Nihopalaoa. Many enemies have attacks that inflict Stop.

Other appearances[]

Kingdom Hearts series[]

Stop is a status effect in the Kingdom Hearts series. Enemies in stop status are prevented from moving for a limited amount of time. In most games, when a stopped enemy is attacked, no damage is dealt at first, but the accumulated damage is dealt when Stop wears off.

Bravely Default[]

Stop makes the affected character unable to act. Victims also do not regenerate BP and cannot recover by being hit with a physical attack. However, stop cannot be removed with items or Esuna/ga. Instead it can only be cured by using Dispel, or naturally over time.
