The Cockatrice is an enemy in Final Fantasy V. Found on the North Mountain, they will attempt to petrify the player party, but are easily eliminated and pose little threat. They are the first enemy in the game that can inflict petrify. They are themselves susceptible to this status, but the player doesn't have the Break spell at the time North Mountain is visited in the story.

Etymology[]
The Cockatrice is a creature from mythology. It is similar to the basilisk in appearance and ability, but also possesses flight. A cockatrice is born from an egg hatched by a rooster and incubated by a toad, and its gaze causes instant petrification.
