Estonian
Etymology
Probably derived from Proto-Norse *ᚲᚢᚾᛞᛁᛚᚨ (*kundila), compare Old Norse kyndill, Old Swedish kyndil (“candle, torch”), Norwegian Bokmål kyndel (“torch”). Another theory suggests a later borrowing directly from Old Swedish kyndil (“candle, torch”). Either way, ultimately from Latin candēla (“candle”). Cognates include Finnish kynttilä, Votic tšüntteli, Ingrian kyntteli and Livonian kīņḑõl. Doublet of kandela.
