Changing image names
[edit]Hi Ost316! I'm just reaching out as I ran across a couple edits of yours from this morning (to Pope Night and Potomac River) that broke files by altering the names. If you're not aware, file names can't be changed (even if there are grammar or punctuation issues) without being re-uploaded, or it will break the image. It looks like it happened through using AWB, but I just wanted to let you know so you're aware for the future! Cheers, Katniss May the odds be ever in your favor ♥ 16:35, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- @KatnissEverdeen: Thank you for catching those, fixing them, and letting me know! I was aware of not changing file names, but I missed preventing those when I saved with AWB; I'll be more careful in the future. —Ost (talk) 23:07, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

Please stop indiscriminately adding archive links to still living pages
[edit]... the way you did e.g. at special:diff/1268592382. This is unhelpful to readers, adding a lot of visual clutter pointing at redundant links, and is also entirely unnecessary. The Wayback Machine already automatically archives nearly all outlinks from Wikipedia, and there are automatic processes regularly checking them for link rot with a bot adding archive links when that happens. –jacobolus (t) 18:12, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- I have not seen a consistent process for checking for linkrot that catches all dead links. Many pages get retargeted to pages that are not the same content or are de facto 404 page that the bots do not find. In this case, I likely forgot to uncheck the IABot setting after running on a page had only links like those that weren't being caught; thanks for reviewing. —Ost (talk) 18:29, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- Sure, if a page is retargeted, or if the content is changed, etc. by all means explicitly add the appropriate archive link. The key point though is that there should be some human thought in the loop. It's not necessary for all still-living external links across Wikipedia to have explicit archive alternatives; that just adds a lot of clutter to lists of citations for limited benefit. –jacobolus (t) 18:54, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
