Eek! The Cat (also called Eek! Stravaganza) is an American animated series, created by Savage Steve Holland and Bill Kopp, that ran from September 12, 1992 to September 5, 1997.
The Terrible Thunderlizards is an animated series that aired in the United States as part of the Fox Kids programming block. It ran from November 20, 1993 to September 5, 1997. The series was spun off from Eek! The Cat. The show was forced to tag along with Eek! The Cat a week after the first two episodes of the series aired. In 1994, The Terrible Thunderlizards had its own show once again, only for an episode. Later that year, The Terrible Thunderlizards was canceled as a series, but had returned as a supporting segment on Eek! The Cat, which had to change the show name to Eek! Stravaganza. Like Eek!, this series was also a Nelvana and Fox Kids company production in association with Savage Studios Ltd.
Premise
Eek! the Cat was about a purple cat named Eek! (exclamation mark included) whose motto was "it never hurts to help". This very attitude, though, always got him into trouble, from which much of the humor of the show was derived. Other characters included Eek!'s human family, with whom he cannot communicate via spoken language; Sharky The Sharkdog (his worst nightmare), and his owner, which was his girlfriend, Annabelle.
The show featured slapstick humor and pop culture references. Shows vary from standard cartoon fare to movie spoofs (Apocalypse Now, A Clockwork Orange) and musical episodes; the first Christmas special was written entirely in rhyme. The show featured many cameos by celebrities, some of whom came back for several episodes.
The Terrible Thunderlizards
For the Thunderlizards, the series chronicled the misadventures of a trio of dinosaur mercenaries released from incarceration and charged with the task of eliminating two primitive human beings. However, despite their superior size and firepower and the obliviousness of their targets, the mercenaries always fail with comic results. When the Thunderlizards are not after the humans, they must protect Jurassic City from the Thuggosaurs. [1] Dee Snider, from the band Twisted Sister composed the show's theme song.
Klutter
For Klutter, the series followed Ryan and Wade Heap, who can't have a pet because their Dad in allergic to pets. So they decide to make a pet on their own, out of a pile of junk (Klutter) by static electricity. There are other characters in the show, like Sandee Heap, who was lonely at first, before Klutter came into their lives. They went on mysteries, a la Sccoby Doo like to save animals and solve crimes. Klutter was unsuccessful with viewers, and Fox Kids cancelled it on April 14, 1996. Fans of Eek! said Klutter was the one that made Eek! jump the shark.
Production
The show premiered on the now defunct Fox Kids Saturday Morning block. It was re-run from 1998 to 1999 on Fox Family, now ABC Family, which has the rights to this show.. The series was a Nelvana and Fox Kids Company co-production in association with Savage Studios Ltd.
In the second season, the show was cut to 11 minutes. Then in the middle of the season, another segment was added to the show, called The Terrible Thunderlizards, which was called Eek! And The Terrible Thunderlizards at time. Then, the Thunderlizards was absorbed with Eek! into Eek! Stravaganza in the third season, (which was the new name that lasted until the end of the show). Then in 1995, another segment came around, called Klutter in its fourth season.Klutter was a segment that was ran from September 9, 1995 to April 14, 1996 on the Fox Kids block. The show was created by David Silverman and Savage Steve Holland. The show was animated by the same people who used to work for ABC's and FOX's The Critic, which just have been canceled that year. The show was executive produced by David Silverman, Savage Steve Holland, and Phil Roman. The show was a Fox Kids and Savage Studios Ltd. co-production in association with Film Roman.
The show was ran as a segment on Eek! The Cat, now known as Eek! Stravaganza in the fourth season. It barley lasted a year with 8 episodes. Some fans consider that Klutter was a combination of Eek! and The Critic.
In the fifth season, because of Klutter not returning for the final year of Eek!, The show was reduced to just 18 11 minute episodes (12 Eeks and 6 Thunderlizards). The new season aired on October 24, 1996. It abruptly stopped airing Eek! after October 28, 1996. Then, on July 7, 1997, through September 5, 1997, new epidodes aired.
Upon cancellation of Eek! the Cat, the show was purchased by Saban and repackaged with other shows, but no new episodes aired and ultimately Saban canceled it. For years, all that was available commercially was a single VHS tape with episodes 2 and 7 on it in 1995. Some time after 2001, Eek! and other properties of Saban were sold to Disney.
The series is now available to watch on the ABC Family website at[1] and can also be seen on the Jetix channel in some parts of Europe.
Episodes
Characters
- Eek! the Cat
Voiced by Bill Kopp, he always puts others' safety, needs, and comfort before his own. Eek! can talk with all animals and most humans but cannot converse with those in his immediate household - Mom, Wendy Elizabeth and J.B. He commonly exclaims "Kumbaya!" His motto is that "It never hurts to help!", although, with Eek!, this is frequently not the case. One of the major gags was when he was asked by friendly ghosts "to use your head in order to get out" of anti-ghost made jar. With Eek! replying "never hurts to help", he soon founds that to use his head literally does hurt.
- Sharky the Sharkdog
Annabelle's pet guard dog who defends Annabelle's house with the viciousness (and also the overall appearance) of a shark. Sharky does not speak, but more than makes up for it in growls. Sharky typically terrorizes Eek! for fun, although occasionally as a reaction to Eek!'s incessant trouble-causing helpfulness. There are moments where the two get along and partner in the plotline, but they happen to be rare.
- Mom
Voiced by Elinor Donahue, does a lot of house cleaning and is a student of foreign languages, especially "Spangalese". A running gag features her absent-mindedly listening to foreign language cassettes, reciting the non-sensical translations of English phrases while unknowingly causing mayhem. She appears to be a single mom.
- Wendy Elizabeth and J.B. - the children, normal kids and are whiney and spoiled. They watch a lot of television. Their favorite show is The Squishy Bearz Rainbow of Enchanted Fun Minute, quite probably a care bears spoof.
- Annabelle - a female cat and Eek's girlfriend who acts like a Southern belle. She is also extremely fat, although Eek! does not seem aware of this (he responds, genuinely surprised, "Really?" whenever someone comments on Annabelle's weight), he just sees Annabelle as being very beautiful. He is attributed as saying about Annabelle: "The more of you there is, the more there is to love." Despite her weight, her arms and legs are very skinny. Eek! fell in love with Annabelle the first time he saw her, when he was hit by the arrow of a one-winged cupid.
- Elmo the Elk (also known as Elmo: The Brown Nosed Reindeer, Incredible Elmo) - Eek!'s extremely inept but friendly friend. Elmo typically maintains a courageous façade but is actually quite cowardly. He typically works as a stuntman or in some form of action career.
- Timmy, Elmo's brother - He constantly needs money for various absurd medical ailments, which Elmo tries to raise with Eek!'s help. These usually consist of very dangerous stunts that only harm Eek! when he gets involved.
- Mittens - Eek!'s friend who is also a cat. His fur is blue, he always wears red mittens, and he suffers from extreme paranoia and he always ends a sentence with the word "Man" (e.g. LOOK OUT, MAN!!).
- The Squishy Bearz, four colorful bears with their own children's TV program called The Squishy Bearz Rainbow of Enchanted Fun Minute; they're an obvious parody of the Care Bears. Kozy (brown), Puffy (blue) and Wuz Wuz (pink) all have happy and friendly attitudes. The fourth bear, Pierre (green), who speaks with a French accent and wears a beret, is bitter and cynical.
- Steven, a squirrel who lives in a nearby tree with his wife and four children. Steven and his family are so incredibly boring that even Eek! can't stand being around them for long.
Thunderlizard Characters
Doc Tari
Doc Tari (human codename Doctor) is the leader of the team. He is based on a Parasaurolophus only with a hole in the center that contains many gadgets, including a buzz-saw. He talks in a voice similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger in his film Commando. His catchphrase is "we move!" Voiced by Savage Steve Holland, the co-creator.
Kutter
Day Z. Kutter (human codename Daisycutter) is the second in command of the team. He is based on a Styracosaurus, although he was mis-addressed as a Triceratops. As his name suggests, he is good with knives, being the master of the knife fight, and wears a skull T-shirt. Kutter is not as smart as Doc, but not as stupid as Squat. Voiced by Bill Kopp, also the co-creator.
Squat
Bo Diddly Squat is the third member of the team. He is based on a Diplodocus. He is the cliche "dim-witted clumsy screw-up" (ala Curly Howard). His voice and mannerisms are similar to Bill Paxton's character from the film Aliens. Squat is often used as the volunteer to assess dangerous situations. Voiced by Jason Priestly and later by Brian Donovan in the fifth season of Eek! Stravaganza.
General Galapagos
General Galapagos is the boss of the Thunderlizards. He is a bad-tempered Tyranosaurid who oversees the missions of the Terrible Thunderlizards to hunt down the humans. They never have any luck at accomplishing their mission, which often angers him. He also has a wife and son. His catchphrase, "We Dinosaurs are doomed, I just know it." Voiced by Kurtwood Smith.
Mr. T-Rex
Mr. T-Rex is Galapagos's best soldier. He is a Tyrannosaurus who is based on (and voiced by) Mr. T. T-Rex is clearly a parody of Mr. T's characters Clubber Lang from Rocky III & B. A. Baracus from The A-Team, even saying "I pity the fool" and calling the Thunderlizards "fools" or "suckas." His anger frequently gets him into trouble resulting in the Thunderlizards having to save him. His two recruits are Nate the Dragon, a Velociraptor that uses a Bo staff and is clearly based on Bruce Lee, and El Gordo, a Spanish-like Ceratosaurus with the ability to use camouflage by putting any type of plant on his body.
Bill & Scooter
Bill & Scooter are the two humans - Homo Sapiens - the Thunderlizards have to eliminate so they will never evolve into the humans we are today.
Bill (voiced by Charlie Adler) is Scooter's whiny, ill-tempered partner in the invention game. He gets to test drive the newest devices often with ill, chaotic and disastrous consequences. When he's intact from a failed experiment, Bill must watch out for a dangerous species of Jungle Slug who likes to eat him. Throughout the series, he is known for his catchphrase "When does the hurting stop?".
Scooter (voiced by Curtis Armstrong) is a jolly, overly enthusiastic caveman, who loves to invent such things as a square wheel, baseball (actually "beesball" because they use a beehive as the ball), and the pogo stick.
The Thugasaurs
The Thugasaurs are a race of undead dinosaurs that live in the X-Zone on the outskirts of Jurassic City (a frequent target of the Thugosaurs) and are the main villains of the Thunderlizards. Thugo (voiced by Brad Garret) is the diabolical leader of a group of black-hooded skeleton-like Thugasaurs. His vanity insists he always look good, so Thugo often spends more time trying to improve his appearance than accomplishing his evil plans - plans that would mean the end of the Living Dinosaurs. He also likes watching drama TV shows. Biff is Thugo's wimpy, flower-loving, second-in-command. He's really too dainty to be part of a villainous organization like The Thugasaurs. The notable appearances that differentiate the army from Biff & Thugo are Biff has a long snout with bucky teeth & also wears a mask while Thugo has an alternate skull-shape with sharp teeth-like bones & a rounder face. All other Thugosaurs resemble both of the villains.
Klutter Characters
Klutter
Klutter is the star (and the name of the show). He's a pet made from a pile of clothes from static electricity by Ryan and Wade Heap. Klutter is thought as a dog in the show, mostly because of licking other people faces (mostly Vanna), and alerting the gang what's going on. Of course, Klutter is sometimes ignored by Ryan, Wade and the gang while alerting or saving somebody, or squashed by objects and other things. Klutter's owner's parents doesn't know that he exist. He was voiced by Kirk Thatcher.
Ryan Heap
Ryan Heap is the oldest of the Heap children. He wants to be a reporter just like his father. But his father laughs at him because he thinks the stuff aren't real. He was the leader of the gang. His hairdo would change different colors in almost every episode. He was voiced by Cam Clarke.
Wade Heap
Wade Heap is the middle child with a mild attitude. He doesn't say much, but that's because he's quiet most of the time. He has a distinctive low/Geeky voice. He was voiced by Savage Steve Holland, the co-creator.
Sandee Heap
Sandee Heap is the youngest of the Heaps. She's a preschooler that was previously lonely until Klutter came around and brighten up her day. She is often noted for her extremely high voice. She was voiced by Sandy Fox, who's name is just like Sandee's name.
Vanna Heap
Vanna Heap is Ryan. Wade, and Sandee's cousin that lives next door. She is a teacher's pet, bright, and sometimes bossy. She can't stand neither Klutter nor Kopp for their silly actions sometimes. She is sometimes a brat when she feels like acting one. She was voiced by Halie Stanford.
Kopp
Kopp is a character that's very crazy and paranoid sometimes lazy. He's an underachiever, who has a not so secret crush on Vanna. It is known that Kopp was based on the real Bill Kopp, who couldn't participate to work on Klutter. He was voiced by Michael Zorek.
The Parents
John Heap
John Heap is the father of Ryan, Wade and Sandee Heap. He's a news reporter that most of the time claims that the town he lives in is dull, although exciting (and scary) things happens when he doesn't look. His voice was provided by the co-creator, David Silverman.
Andrea Heap
Andrea Heap is the mother of Ryan, Wade and Sandee Heap. She wants Ryan and Wade to focus on growing up (and picking up their Klutter off the floor). She's also a 1960s like mom who's a little ditsy. She is also a library employee. She was voiced by Kathy Ireland.
