Rustbone is an alternative rock band from Hamburg, Germany. The band was founded by Michael "Michi" Pfaff in 2019.
Biography
[edit]Formation
[edit]In 2019, after spending years gigging with Betty - a veteran Helmet cover band - Pfaff decided to form a new group with a focus of alternative music genre. He called his old friend Frank which agreed to play drums with him and brought a bass player named Steffi.
First Year (2019)
[edit]After forming the band which consists Frank, Steffi, and himself, he invited Robert to fill the vocal duty, in which he agreed. Robert joined eventually in Spring 2019.
After few rehearsals with the band Robert began to showing some symptom of depression and went distant with the band. During his last rehearsal Robert went outside for a quick cigarette and never come back inside, which worried his bandmates. Frank tried to reach him with no success.
The band kept on going despite vacancy of the singer. They started to rehearse in Probebunker-Eiffestraße.
Later that year, through a contact of a fellow user of the Probebunker, the band became acquainted with Felippe "PhilBone" Barreto, a renowned guitarist/singer from Brazil, previously of FreiRaum. After few jams meeting with the band he joined as their lead singer.
The four-piece line up (2019 - 2021)
[edit]The newly formed band began to rehearse together. They started doing cover songs of nineties band, mostly Nirvana and Helmet songs, but some straight rock like Danko Jones.
Tired of doing covers, the band started to write their own songs. Barreto, unlike the previous singer, has abilities to write music and lyrics, which he did extensively.
Rustbone then began to gig in Hamburg area with their own music, they quickly became well known due to Frank's precision drumming and Barreto's ability to scream, combined with catchy riffs from Pfaff which he played in an unusual way.
With the pandemic hit the world, particularly the music scene in Germany, Rustbone was forced to put down their activities in 2020. The band secretly held meetings for rehearsal and was able to write ten songs ready to be recorded.
Rustbone recorded five songs with the help of Dirk, a former recording engineer of the heavy metal band Accept. The songs were all taken in one single day which mostly were live-recorded. After few weeks Dirk managed to master the tracks.
Barreto then had a contact from a student of Deutsche POP - an institute for training and further education in the field of sound engineering - who was looking for a band for his small recording-project. Together with him, they recorded Gallow's Vain.
After the Deutsche POP recording session, a dissension strained within the band, which led to departure of Frank and Steffi. Left with no other member, Pfaff and Barreto decided to put a break for the band.
Formation to a five-piece band (2022)
[edit]Desperate looking for new member, Pfaff and Barreto began to place ads online. After few weeks the ongoing ads found its way to Inti, Hamburg-Based IT-Programmer who previously played bass in a punk band and Agni, a musician from Indonesia. Both of them were interested to fill the bass player position. Overwhelmed with their enthusiasm, both were quickly invited to an audition in February 2022. Because Rustbone didn't have a drummer at that time. Barreto asked Lilian Stenzel - a former bandmate of his in FreiRaum and a well known drummer of Kommando Kant, to help with band with the audition. Stenzel learnt most of Rustbone songs just before the audition.
Agni and Inti showed up to the audition. Given the songs just few days before, they tried to improvise few bass lines to fit into the songs. Impressed by this, Pfaff and Barreto wanted to keep both in the band. Inti is the new bass player and Agni was asked to be Rustbone's guitarist beside Pfaff, effectively their second guitarist. After this decision Pfaff and Barreto asked Stenzel to fill the drummer's position, which she agreed.
First Record
[edit]Barreto then decided to go with the plan of publishing Rustbone's music online. On January 28 2022 Rustbone released its first record, a self-titled EP containing five tracks. Also on July 29, the band released its unreleased recorded track Gallows Vain as a single.
The lineup containing Inti on Bass, Agni on Guitars and Stenzel on drums had its first show in Summer 2022 at ForcedFest in Rahlstedt and later in August at Campus Fest organized by AStA Uni Hamburg.
Stenzel's Departure
[edit]As a drummer who played in three separate projects (Kommando Kant, Josie, and Rustbone) at that time, Stenzel was having difficulties to catch up will all the projects she's working on.
