Ulrich Becker
Ulrich BECKER (born on November 14, 1958 in Frankenberg) is a publisher of literature in and about Esperanto and of interlinguistic literature in general. He holds a Master in Science of Publishing degree from Pace University in New York (2001). In 1983 he finished studies of French and Russian literature and linguistics at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany with a Teacher's License.
Ulrich Becker is a member of the Society for Interlinguistics (Gesellschaft für Interlinguistik, GIL), of the international Literary Academy of Esperanto (Akademio Literatura de Esperanto}, of Universal Esperanto Association (Universala Esperanto-Asocio, UEA) and other national and international organizations. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the FAME Foundation for the Support of International Communication.
He was awarded the Grabowski Prize (Premio Grabowski) in 2005 for his achievements in publishing in Esperanto. He won several prizes in the international literary competitions of UEA, Belartaj Konkursoj, i.a. the prize Nova Talento in 1990, first prizes in 1991, 1995, and 2004 and second prizes in 1991 and 2004. He was also awarded the Humboldt Prize from Humboldt University in 1983 and an Arthur Anderson Scholarship from Pace University in 2000.
Publishing and Esperanto
Ulrich Becker learned Esperanto autodidactically in 1976. Between 1988 and 1990 he worked full-time for the Esperanto Association of German Democratic Republic. After the reunification of Germany he was elected board member of the German Esperanto Association (Germana Esperanto-Asocio, until 1993) and was editor of its magazine Esperanto Aktuell. In 1991 he was co-founder of the Society for Interlinguistics (Gesellschaft für Interlinguistik, GIL) in Berlin and elected its board member (until 1999). He edited and published GIL's Interlinguistische Informationen - Beihefte and the cultural newsletter Kultur news (newsletter of the non-profit organization Kulturring in Berlin e.V. in Berlin during the 1990's. He started editing and publishing for InterNation, Inc. in New York in 2002, and for the Esperanto department of Mondial in [[New York}} 2004.
Esperanto Literature
Ulrich Becker is the author of a collection of short stories in Esperanto (La Aĵoj kaj la sezonoj, 1996), a poetry book in Esperanto (Ĉiuj dioj estas for. Novjorkaj poemoj, 2004), of a collection of interviews withe Esperanto speakers (with Zdravka Metz: Vivprotokoloj, 1995 and 2009), and of short stories in various Esperanto magazines. Some of his Esperanto short stories have been translated into ethnic languages.
German Literature
He is also author of a novel in German (New York Lunatic oder Die andere Seite des Mondes, 2000) and of a novella in the German anthology Einmal war's schön (Literaturpreis der schwulen Buchläden), 1997).
