Derived terms

editEtymology
editSSA considers this word a sound-symbolic variant of juoni.[1] Perhaps more precisely equivalent to j(u)on- + -o, with sporadic shortening of the root vowel (*joon- > *jon-). The forms juono and joni are also found, albeit only sporadically, in dialects. Related to Veps jono, which is found outside of literary Veps in the adverb jonol (“in a line (of e.g. people)”).
Pronunciation
editNoun
editjono
- line, queue (straight sequence of people or items)
- range (line or series of mountains, buildings, etc.)
- (military) file (column of people; small detachment of soldiers)
- (mathematics) sequence (ordered list of objects)
- (computing) queue (first-in-first-out data structure)
