Help:Resources by educational level

This page is a guide to using project boxes to tag and categorise your resources by educational level. The Wikiversity project boxes system allows you to insert an easy and attractive project box into your resource which does a lot of handy things behind the scenes, such as classifying your resource and making it accessible in the navigation system. Just follow the easy instructions below.

About "educational levels"

edit

There are a number of established typologies for educational systems, but these do not entirely agree. The system used here distinguishes between the formal and non-formal sectors, where formal is education provided by some authority or organisation external to the home. "Formal" generally means primary-secondary-tertiary. Pre-school technically covers both a "formal" (?) component (kindergarten/nursery) and a "non-formal" element (home education from birth onwards), but is excluded from "non-formal" below. In the sense used here, "non-formal" refers to a broad range of educational types including lifelong learning and learning outside school - i.e. everything that doesn't fit in the other categories. "Tertiary" education is sometimes understood to combine both teaching and research elements, but it is perhaps best to give research its own category and box.

Project boxes for tagging resources by educational level

edit

It is sufficient to write the shortcut into your wiki-markup. Just copy and paste (or type) the code given into your page including the double curly brackets. The project box will align itself on the right-hand side of your page. The project box will also automatically categorise the resource into a special category which puts your resource into the category tree of the equivalent portal. The project box also adds a link to the relevant portal. All of this is automatic - you just type in the code shown, and the rest is done for you.

Frequent questions

edit

Q: I'm not sure which of these templates to use for my resource.

A: You don't have to pin yourself to one of them. If you're trying to make up your mind between two of them, use both.

Q: My resource is targeted at an audience which crosses over between these levels.

A: You are welcome to apply more than one of these project boxes to your resource.

Q: Where should I put this on my page?

A: Probably either at the very top or the very bottom. It's really a question of your own taste. User boxes have traditionally been placed at the top of user pages, so if you can't decide, put your project boxes at the top as well.

Q: Can I combine these with other project boxes, such as subject-related project boxes and completion-status project boxes?

A: Yes. In fact, please do. This is the idea. The project boxes are designed to stack up in a matching group, and create a full metadata classification for your resource.
