Dinosaur King (古代王者恐竜キング, Kodai Ōja Kyōryū Kingu, literally "Ancient Ruler Dinosaur King") is a card game from Sega that uses the same gamplay mechanics from Mushiking and uses super-powered dinosaurs instead of beetles. The game was revealed in JAMMA 2005 and is already released in both Japanese and English versions. Sega has even filed Taito for a game called Dino King that uses Sega's patented gameplay from Mushiking. A Nintendo DS version was also announced and unlike its arcade counterpart, it will also be released in North America in 2008 [1].
The series has also been adapted into an anime TV series, Kodai Ōja Kyōryū King: DKidz Adventure (古代王者恐竜キング Dキッズ・アドベンチャー, Kodai Ōja Kyōryū Kingu D Kizzu Adobenchā), which is made by Sunrise and premiered on TV Asahi from February 4, 2007. An English adaptation is airing on 4Kids TV. 4Kids has granted Funimation DVDs distribution of their adaptation of Dinosaur King. [2]
Story
Dr. Taylor was on a paleontology mission with his son, Rex in Africa. Max, Rex's best friend, joins along as well. When Max had stumbled across some magic stone slabs with images of dinosaurs, the boys were being called out by the dinosaurs for help. It seems that an evil organization called the "Alpha Gang", led by the nefarious Dr. Z, traveled back in time to hunt down the dinosaurs so that they could take over the world by using those dinosaurs. It is up to Max, Rex, and their friend Zoe to travel around the world, defeating Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang while hunting down the dinosaurs.

- Zander (Noratty in japanese version) (Darren Dunstan): Member of the Alpha Gang. He works with Ursula and Ed into obtaining dinosaur cards for Dr. Z. Cards
There are different cards to collect and use in order to play Dinosaur King. The barcodes are located on the long edges of the cards for the player to scan them in the machine. So far, there are four types of cards used in this game.
Dinosaur Cards
These cards represent the "character" for the player. This is first scanned when a player scans his/her dinosaur and move. Each dinosaur is unique in the following traits:
- Basic information (Meaning of name, Length, Period and Located Where; in the back of the card)
- Critical Hit type
- Element
- Technique points
- Strength Value
- Type
Type :
Every Dinosaur Card has its type.
Each Type has different ability to effect the battle.
Most of dinosaurs now in Japan's version gets New Type instead of old one.
- Attack Type : Has higher power of move and usually with powerful Critical Move.
- Tie Type : Get lower damages from a tie.
- Defense Type : Higher stamina but usually with weaker Critical Move.
New Type in Japan(Just provisional translation)
- Blitz : Raise Move's power when counter at 10 to push botton.
- Counter : Raise Move's power after lose.
- Juncture : Raise Move's power when stamina turns red.
- Hunter : Raise Move's power when opponent in weak.
- Onslaught : Make oppoment get more damages from a tie.
- Valiant : Raise Move's power which is lose to opponent's Critical Move.
- Revive : Can survive when lose by a tie for one time.
Move Cards
These cards represent the fighting techniques of the super-powered dinosaurs in the Dinosaur King arcade game. They are only scanned once the Dinosaur Card has been scanned. Only one move card per move type can only be scanned, making a total of possible three cards to scan.
Super Move Cards
These cards can teach the dinosaur a special elemental move and can cause massive damage when used. In the first edition cards there is only one card per element. As of the third edition each move (rock, paper, and scissors) has one super move card per element. More will be revealed over time. The player cannot scan an element card if the element of the dinosaur does not match the element of the Super Move. If he/she scans a "wrong" card, the game will tell the player that he/she scanned the wrong element.
Character Cards
These cards are only available in Japan but work in English. Character Cards are cards that display members of the Alpha Gang. They can alter the game in many ways. 1 PLAYER: You can choose difficulty levels without pressing all three buttons at the same time, the character on the card will be playable instead of Rex, Dr. Taylor will be replaced by Dr. Z giving you hints, and you will receive an Alpha Gang level at the end of the four battles. 2 PLAYER: You will play as the character on the card. The only way to obtain character cards is to go to Japan, get specific Japanese stamped cards, and trade them with an office. Only scan before the dinosaur.
Differences from Mushiking
- Frame rate is lower
- Loading times seem faster
- Character designs are in anime, not 3D
- Barcode is on one side, not both
- Rare cards have the bronze, silver, or gold color on the frame, not in the background
- Rare card's names are not engraved in gold
- There are elements for each dinosaur
- There are no other collections, like parallel collections, for the dinosaurs
- The dinosaur's energy range in the thousands, while the beetle's energy range are the hundreds
About the Dinosaur King Anime
Kodai Ōja Kyōryū King: DKidz Adventure (古代王者恐竜キング Dキッズ・アドベンチャー, Kodai Ōja Kyōryū Kingu D Kizzu Adobenchā) is a kodomo or kodoshonen anime or a Japanese kid’s cartoon show or a child-oriented anime that remains true to video game creator Sega's unique vision of dueling and fighting super-powered dinosaurs. It is produced by Sunrise and began airing on TV Asahi on February 4, 2007. It is released on DVD in Japan by BEAM or Happinet, the same Japanese video company that released another Japanese kodoshonen, or child-oriented anime, Digimon Data Squad on DVD.
4Kids Entertainment has licensed the anime and distributes the US English adaptation. The anime was launched under the name Dinosaur King on September 8, 2007 on 4Kids TV.
Unlike many of 4Kids' licensed anime, the English version of the show is fairly faithful to the Japanese version. The English script follows the Japanese script closely, although occasionally a joke will have its meaning changed. 4Kids also appears to not be hiding the fact that the setting is in Japan, as they have left in maps of Japan, as well as dinner scenes with Japanese food and silverware. While some humans and dinosaurs receive Americanized names, 4Kids does keep all technical terms like "Dino Holder," "Dino Slash," and attack names, such as "Electric Charge." (It should also be noted that it was not 4Kids' decision to Americanize the character names, as Sega had already changed them before 4Kids licensed the anime.) Most Japanese text is erased (though English text is left in). An original soundtrack has been created, although 4Kids occasionally uses some of the original Japanese music. The English version has also been cropped from widescreen to fullscreen.
Character Names and Puns
- Zoe's name in the Japanese version is homage to the Malmu Tatsuno that occurred around the end of the Jurassic.
- Rex's name is a pun on what usually succeeds Tyrannosaurus in books (Rex means king in Latin.)
- Every menber of Alpha Gang's name has relation to dinosaur in Japanese version. Most of it is sounds like reversed name of dinosaur.
